The way to get connected to local businesses is by being friendly and reliable. It's boomer talk but you have to start on the bottom floor.
When I was younger I worked in a kitchen washing dishes, but then by making friends with one of the chefs I got connected to a guy who builds high end racing cars. I started working for him and now I've been connected with other workshops buiding cars, and I had more work than I knew what to do with for now. His customers are filthy rich, and now I've got an in with them. That means that when I'm older and experienced I'll have a good reputation and wealthy customer base to make good money off whilst doing something I love. No pain no gain sonny.

Yeah, old boomers approach me with cars that they want to go fast. I'll use what I've learnt to spec out and build an engine package (ported head, optimised cam specs etc.). This gets installed in the car along with any other parts (suspension, gearbox, differential etc.), and set up on the rolling road at my work. They drive the car for a few years and come back to have the engine rebuilt and minor tweaks and servicing done by employees. They tell their friends and the cycle repeats.

i think the issue is we've been raised with this idea that starting a business involves coming up with some new idea thats never been done before and then presenting it in front of a panel of multimillionaires on television.

in reality a successful business is more likely to be something thats been done a thousand times before.

It's not. The important bit is you've got your foot in the door and your name is in their head, which is a million miles ahead of someone who may do great work but isn't. If the work you do is satisfactory, you've essentially got a customer for life. The guy I work for at the moment has people coming from other countries to get engines built. And the best thing about fast cars is that the customers are rich hobbyists. They pay what it costs. They aren't hagglers.

>get a good job with stable high pay
>go to bank and get a loan (the bank knows you can pay it back because you have a good job)
if you can't get a high paying job in the first place and work it for years to impress the banks you're already fucked unless you can raise the quarter million dollars or whatever it takes to open a coffee shop or whatever on your own.
