Paying taxes is unironically legalized theft. You get born in any country, make money and literally have 40% to 50% stolen from you or else you will end up in jail. How we ever agreed to such a system is beyond me

Governments took advantage of the depression/ww2 crises to ram them through. They were pitched as "emergency measures", before the states deceitfully made them the new normal. If they were called "work tax" and not "income tax" people might start to think about how cancerous they are.

It started as the nobles taxing the plebs in produce so they could sell and afford clothes, ships, sails etc.
Then wars brought in monetary taxes on the nobles under the kings.
Usually these taxes would be abandoned after a war and the lords would just be required to maintain their own estates but stuff like trade taxes, road/bridge tolls etc. usually remained.
Then all the royals and nobles got inbred, thus each had claims on foreign lands, which led to long-term taxes due to "cold wars" between france, england, spain, germany etc.
e.g every village in england was required to make arrows during the "war" against (more like looting of) france. This can be considered a tax. While france needed money to hire genoese crossbowmen and pay ransoms for their nobles, and their equipment, who got kidnapped. England was notorious for it's huge ransoms. The price of the king of scotland was the entirety of scotlands wealth.
The adoption of chivalry really fucked people over as horses cost an insane amount to maintain, as does the armor, and petty knights went around claiming defacto taxes in food, housing, and general supplies for "war efforts" and could make up any lie about a pleb they wanted.
