what is your income like?
I think this depends on how much you guys make. If it is toyota or honda I say you should just sit on it and use it, put $5k into the loan each, finance the rest of the $20k and pay it down slowly. Hopefully your credit is good.
If it is a dogshit expensive to maintain care (i.e. Smart car, mini, fiat) I would probably sell it for $27k, take the $3k hit and then beat the fuck out of your girlfriend with a baseball bat.
