They gather money from other people who have to much money and give it to people who need it for business. This work as an intermediary pays well for the simple fact that the money has to go through them. If people with excess savings could find people who need those savings automatically, investment bankers would not need to exists.

Why is Paris rich and the rest of France not so much? Because a lot of money from all over France has to go to Paris and Parisians decide to take a chunk of it for them.

Facilitate company transactions such as stock offering or M&A. The work itself isn't hard, but having to be in office/on call for the client day and night is draining. They get paid a bunch of money to accept not having a life. The industry softened up a bit during Covid and let some work from home but that was never the case in the past.
As you work your way up the ladder, your focus becomes selling rather than executing. Most investment banks do the same thing, so it is important to form strong connections and have a number of repeat customers in order to make it. As a result, it helps to be Bateman-esque so you maintain a glowing impression internally and externally.
