STEM grads struggle to make 6 figures in an era where a basic $100,000 salary isn’t enough to own a home that’s actually for sale.

Using aggregators like levels.fyi you can also see that the vast majority of “high paying” jobs are in places like LA, Seattle, or Austin, which are so expensive that your high paying job actually puts you middle of the pack.

STEM isn’t even good anymore.

It’s not possible to make $110,000 in STEM outside of a few metro areas where the median house price is 800k+.

Got a STEM degree and live in the Midwest? It takes a decade of experience for a paltry $80,000 salary. STEM is complete fucking garbage in 2023.

You can’t make six figures with a STEM degree in a place with cheap housing, you’ll always be paid proportionally to shelter costs in the area. See >>54307511

I don’t know why this is so hard to understand. There’s cheap houses everywhere, but the jobs the people around there have are low paying and if you move there you’ll also have a low paying job.

STEM has always been garbage for money, even before hyperinflation. It wasn't poorfag territory like it is now, but the problem has always been that anyone intelligent enough to do STEM work is intelligent enough to make way more money with a business or various other activities. And you can run your own business founded on STEM related activities (consulting agency, engineering firm, etc.) and still do what you're interested in.

Assuming you don't have kids, that's quite affordable to get a house. Save up 100k over 5 years (20k a year is nothing if you're single making 100k a year, I save like 40k with my 110k salary), 20% down payment, boom.

>> No.54310351

>>54310087

> assuming you don't have kids

Right, that's the whole point - assuming you have kids, no life, and exist to work, you can even buy a $400,000 house to pay off in 30 years (of not having kids or a life).

Furthermore, keep in mind that a working class neighborhood house (by working class, I mean WORKING class) 20 mins away from the highway, 40 years old, etc is now over $250,000. $400,000 is a 50 year old house with no repairs (but nothing obviously wrong with it) in a good neighborhood 40 minutes away from downtown in a flyover state.

Again, this is the definition of barely middle class as >>54310070 said.

I got a BS in environmental science. I was 17 when I chose my field of study and I didn’t think about money other than “it’s stem, I’ll be fine.” I now work in IT and make 63. I work two jobs to pay off debt and save for a second degree. I know lots of people with similar degrees, some with student debt, who went out and got jobs around 40k.

I took the remotepill. I get an inflated salary from a company based in a fucking expensive coastal city, enough to make me a 1%er in my flyover ZIP code. But it's less than they would pay me if I lived in the city the office is in so they're happy to save money and I'm happy to be rich for my area and get ahead. They pay to fly me out a few times a year so I can have fun in the big city on their dime every few months but I still live in a nice big house on a few acres in my white town and get to fuck around most of the work day.
