I have a theory that the government has a secret cap on our individual net worth's. They probably manage this by categorizing individuals based on their age and overall contribution to society. For example, if you own a business and employ standard W-2 wagies you are placed into a category that is allotted more net worth. Your projected inheritance is also factored in, and a large inheritance means you're allowed less net worth.

If you cross their net worth threshold for your productivity category, a glowie enters your life and an amount roughly matching the excess is strategically ripped away from you. The type of glowie is matched to your personality type and your expected response to the issue they present to you.

They do this primarily as a way to curb inflationary demand at a granular level after they print lots of money, and as a compliment to their broader methods like controlling interest rates. On a social level it's a way to force anyone who has prematurely "made it" to get back on the treadmill and continue supplying their youthful energy to the productivity of the system.

Individual employees of the government doing this couldn’t work yes, but with the internet supplying information to the right people is possible to make people lose money. All it takes is one criminal in your area reading an article on how to harvest catalytic converters and how the ones on your model of car are easiest to pull off, and wallah you’re out $500 next emissions test.

Of course this is very granular and likely doesn’t happen, what’s more likely is you’re throttled by your job availability and major purchases.
