use an opacity mask on the layer with the word gains. you can use a simple gradient or different shapes for the mask. white would be opaque, black would be transparent, and grayscale values would be in between. it's easy in photoshop/illustrator and I'd assume gimp/inkscape have the same type of thing although I don't use those.

or you could just take like a picture of blood splatter or something like that and use that as a clipping mask, so the word gains would only show through in the area of the splatter. just google opacity mask or clipping mask and you can figure it out.
