The entire time I worked for them I only heard from Hussie maybe twice? Rachel did most of the stuff and whatever was emailed to Hussie was passed on to her from what I gathered.

This is exactly what makes people sometimes hate Model Magic from what I've found out. When I met a few people at a convention, they let me fix their horns for them and they were still squishy. I asked how long they let them dry and they said they had made them three days ago.

I've had to wait upwards of about 3 weeks for complete dryness with Model Magic in order to handle it/sand it/paint it or anything else but also because I slow dry to prevent cracks.

I tried paper clay once and it just felt really brittle and kind of heavy but I wouldn't mind trying it again just for the knowledge. I'd love to do Resin casting stuff since at least those would be more durable for probably the larger of the horn sets.

But yeah, if you're going to use MM, plan way ahead of time and be patient with it. If it cracks, fill it with super glue and hold it together for about 30 seconds then let it continue drying.

Either use the screw method of get large plastic combs that you can slide in your wig on the sides of your head.

I've used both headbands and combs and the combs stayed in for hours without need to adjust them. They hide really well in a thick wig.

When you sculpt your horns and they're finished, measure the arc of the comb against your horn then cut a small groove in there. The horn should be able to slide and curve with the comb which, in your hair/wig will give it a more natural look.

I have a picture of the combs in a wig of mine if you're interested in how they look or I can grab some pictures if you're confused, sorry for my crap describing but I figured I'd offer that up for you. Good luck!

I posted this on my tumblr and twitter but I wanted to let Homestuck cosplayers going to Fanime know that if something happens to their horns like, they break or the paint comes off or falls off their combs/headbands, whatever, I offer a free repair service at my Artist Alley booth.

So feel free to come find me in the AA and I'll do my best to fix if you have a problem. I might not have a 100% materials available but I'll be more than happy to do what I can with what I have.

The video helped a lot. I hadn't thought about doing gradients in that way before. I've had a few people request gradients and I'm always glad to do them when I can.

I tend to use a dry brush method. I can elaborate if people want since it's pretty simple but just time consuming. Thanks for typing all that out though. I'll screen cap it for future reference.

I usually always use model magic all the way for the horns I do. And yeah, sadly they can take long to dry but in a great deal many orders I get, it's usually the fastest and easiest way for me to sculpt a lot. I know if they dry too fast though, they crack or split or break easier than the slower process of drying.

With how Aradia's horns are on the side of her head, your best bet might actually be to use rather strong plastic combs. I've had a couple horns with combs and placed them at the sides of my head and they didn't move at all [if you have a nice thick wig, too, for Aradia.] I have a few samples if you'd like to see them, too.

I'm still also learning how to do the screw method so it would be easier for clients to get their horns without the headbands. So any tips and tricks would be great!

I think it might be because some people don't want to wait for Model Magic to dry. Talking with some people at the AA, they said they had made their horns three days prior to the convention and wondered why they were still mushy and sagging.

Wow those sound interesting! Do you have any In progress shots?

Oh I agree completely. I wish I had the money to invest in something that could help with mass production but at least they've found someone/a company to do that! I feel bad I can only mold so fast and only make a limited amount in one sitting [mostly because space and I only have 2 bins to fit the larger horns inside].

And people like ridges or blends or straight colors or different colors or different attach methods. I'm afraid I've just gone with what's quickest and easiest for me on the tight budget I have since lately Hussie's been getting 50% of whatever I make. I would like to make my own someday, and cosplay a troll and if I do then I'll probably spoil myself and carve in the ridges.

Though, if people usually ask for something special like blends, ridges and what not, I'll do it for free but yeah, it's time consuming and I'm just one person 8< I wish I could do more for the fandom.

Ahh thank you!

Yeah, I ended up getting my camera stolen from me so I had to use my mother's walmart 40 dollar camera to get pictures for everything and the dark lighting bleh. I'll do my best to try and get pictures in the day time so people can see them in day light, flash and normal light settings just in case! So thank you very much for telling me!

I know foam crafted is popular so is tin foil with a thin layer of clay or model magic.

I myself, for the ones I sell, use straight up model magic. I'd have a pair of Succubus horns and Lambo horns for over 4 years without breaking or cracking and with model magic, it continued to harden over time. So, after 4 years they're hard as a rock but completely light. I usually only feel the pressure of the headbands I use.
