I know exactly what you mean anon, I started dabbling in lolita fashion around 2003/4 and although I've enjoyed following the evolution of lolita fashion, for me the 'creepy doll' vibe IS lolita. I've never really been able to escape that old school stronghold as it was also its main drawing point when I first discovered it; this aspect seems to be why so many of the original western lolitas came from the gorh scene too, this was certainly my experience with early UK lolitas anyway.
