I think this could just be about a more quintessential image of oldschool that has developed, rather than technicalities and the full picture of how the fashion used to look.

I think styling has a lot to do with it as well. If you really want to create an 'authentic' appearing old school coordinate using older pieces with a print, I think as long as you keep the accessories and styling compatible with the old school era (no obvious anachronisms) then you will still probably successfully capture the 'feel' or essence of old school. Pic related for instance still strikes me very much as old school, and I think it would even if I wasn't aware of the age of the snap.

That's my take on it though, I'm sure people will have their own sense of what represents old school authenticity as well.
