I personally like how #extra lighting in a bag is, but presentation is really important on LEDs. Exposed wires are ugly, and the lighting usually just looks bad if it's turned on in daylight situations because it detracts from the merch instead of adding to the display. For most instances you want something easy to turn off/on, and something that will be nearly invisible or still aesthetically pleasing when it's turned off.

Pic attached is my bag with lights. The outer lights are hidden inside ribbon for daytime display, and they're balanced with lighting along the back of the dinnerplate badge to help display the merch instead of drowning it out. There are hidden holes in my backing board that the LED strings are threaded through so that the battery box is behind the backing board, and since my backing is only pinned at the top on the sides it's easy to reach in and turn it off/on.
