brushes work well with thin-textured foundations and compact creams in my experience.

if you have very dry/flaky skin a brush will only make the flakiness worse whereas a sponge/bb will not have as much of an "exfoliating" effect esp if you're using gentle patting motions.

As for brushes, determine what your needs are and buy in sets, as HQ as you can afford. Not all cheap brushes are necessarily of poor quality, Elf's studio line is constantly raved about for example. There's HQ synthetic eye brushes if you prefer cruelty free goods. Synthetics tend to get stiffer with more washes while natural bristles do the opposite but as far a performance goes, natural bristles don't deposit that much more color than a good, densely packed synthetic imho.

MAC and other mainstream brushes are way overpriced. And I've heard that MAC's holiday brush sets are inferior quality to the permanent line.

This is entirely subjective but my concerns are skin discolorations and breakouts as well as pores and flakiness. I've yet to find a drugstore foundation that agrees with my skin.

honestly that's a really broad question and also something that ends up becoming very subjective depending on who you ask. in general though i would say try to disregard negative comments (you can't wear X) and like any skin color, just know what colors work well with your skin in general (like, in normal clothing). it's extremely helpful to know about your undertones. are you cool, warm, neutral? etc those will affect what looks better on you and what doesn't.
this color guide is one of those like, "are you a winter/summer" things and i've found it pretty helpful for trying to help myself decide what colors may potentially look nice on me. it says people with dark skin might have a harder time using it so sorry about that if this ends up not being helpful towards you. but anyways, yeah if you don't already know what it is, just look stuff up about finding your undertone and then just do searches based off that.
