OK OP, I am going to lay down the blunt facts.

1: DO NOT BRING A FUCKING WEAPON TO A CON. NO MUSKETS. NO BAYONETS. NO SWORDS. NOTHING. THIS IS NON-FUCKING-NEGOTIABLE. Don't even bring powder or flints.

2: well done 17th, 18th and 19thC clothes and uniform is generally well received by the more historically influenced jfashion types, especially when you have the social graces and skills a gentleman should have (I get invited to tea parties and such at cons all the time). This is only acceptable if you're wearing really good, well tailored clothes.

If you're just walking around, people will ask if you are cosplaying Hamilton. Don't be that tool bag.

3: I FUCKING SWEAR TO GOD, I WILL TRACK YOU DOWN AND PIN YOU TO THE FLOOR THROUGH YOUR CHEEK WITH MY FUCKING BAYONET IF YOU WIND UP ON THE NEWS FOR BEING A RETARD AND BRINGING A MUSKET TO A CON.

We are our own characters. I am me, as I am at work: A garrison sergeant and surgeons mate in the garrison regiment of Williamsburg (Nominally either 80th Royal Edinburgh or 2nd Va depending on which coat I am wearing).
