You can get molds like these, they come in different sizes, usually 6 beads to one mold. Pipe the resin in them, they set, pop them out and voila, a bead.

Mine aren't exactly the same -- I used large glitter pieces in blue and pink. The ones in the image used blue resin dye on one side, pink on the other side and clear in the middle. For filling they seem to have been filled with silver flakes, or maybe tinfoil. Normally I buy glitter, flakes and other tiny things from nail art shops to insert into my resin stuff.

I guess it's not really a waste, I have a floral dress I just got in and want to make some flower-filled beads, so I'll be reusing the mold for that.
