If you can't wield a long sword (one and a half handed sword) one armed with relative success you aren't strong enough/skilled enough to be even the ost basic of knight.

It's actually not that difficult if you have basic strength and finesse.
Also wielding a long sword one handed with a shield is just logical, you boost your defense while having the most versatility possible at your disposal.
