I've been eyeing used VW rocking horses with heavy damage to the wooden sole (pic related has similar damage, it's not the pair I've been eyeing but I'm using it as a reference since the damage is similar)

Since the sole is wood, wouldn't sanding and adding new lacguer technically help at least somewhat? Do any gulls think it's doable for someone who has basic knowledge of power tools and woodwork projects? I would like to try it myself (and use professional shoe repairshop if I end up fucking up). Since the shoes would require a lot of repairs I probably wouldn't sell them in the future anyway, so it's not like someone else would be getting my DIY repaired rocking horses after me.
