Psychologically, the point of furries isn't that they're animals so much as that they're not human. They're more like an elemental or eidolon than a space alien or fantasy race.
The reason furries are all things like foxes and wolves is because uncommon animals like Glaucus Atlanticus or manuls don't have the same cultural background. A furry is like an abstract idea of cool. This is probably why they get associated so much with searing highlights and rave music- they're supposed to feel very adventurous
