I self-taught HTML in middle school, too, and I do minor freelance sometimes when I want some extra money. However, I actually like chasing different schemes. I've done freelance, flipped stuff on ebay, resold from Taobao, scammed lolita noobs (I felt bad and ended up stopping, basically just bought AP replicas and then sewed in fake tags), made a blog with ad revenue, did beer money sites, etc. etc.. It's actually not very hard to get money without a consistent job, and I prefer the reliability of the system I have now. There's no possibility of my losing "my job". I have no set hours; I can work however much I want, and the amount of time I spend working directly affects how much money I make. I have tons of different avenues to fall back on so that if something fails, I have plenty of back-up. I'm also building up a huge skill set in case I want to get a "real" job elsewhere.

"Wasting my life on one retarded scheme after another" has actually made my life really fulfilling. I can't stand monotony, so being able to control what I do and work on my own schedule is really sweet.

Since you're skeptical, this is my Paypal stats so far this year.
