My clear coat faded some paint underneath on a piece made of plastic. Has this happened to anyone else? How can I prevent this from happening.

The two paints (the main color and the clear coat) were both of the same brand and it faded both glossy and matte finishes.

Ah, I just saw the last thread’s reply. I did a regular ponytail wig once before and the sew-in clips worked even with my shirt hair, but the wig was still hell to wear all day. Maybe with this one being up high and not low it won’t hurt as much?

What materials should I use to make Tokoyami's head? I want to avoid using feathers and furs since I want to keep it stylistic. I'm considering using EVA foam for the base.

Also, how should I construct the head? I've cosplayed object head characters in the past so I have a good idea on how to make the head but it feels like I should treat it as if I'm making a fursuit (and I have no experience with that). If it helps, I want the beak to be movable.

Sounds like the coat under the clear coat hadn't fully set/cured yet. If this is spray paint, the outside humidity/temperature are big factors in how long it takes paint to cure. Above 70% and it's just not going to happen. Even though the can may say 30-45 minutes between changing colors, you may want to wait overnight.

White Diamond anon here from the last thread, I just had a thought. I was thinking of adding LEDs to the inside of her cape (sandwiched between two layers of fabric) and using clear pieces over some of the stars in order to give some brightness to her outfit.

This wig certainly is a beast. I think Arda's Chibi Classic in Salmon (which is on sale for $20 rn) would be a good place to start. I know you don't need ponytails, but the pulled back look + bangs is definitely going to help with your style. Here's how I would do it:
>bunt cut half of the bangs
>Brush back the other half of the bangs to blend in with the rest of the hair like you would to your own head when making a ponytail
>Undo the Chibi's ponytails and pull them to the back to create that low bun look. Secure with hairspray and flower clip. There will be extra hair to chop that off, making sure to blend the hair. When doing this, try to make that seam on the back of chibi's head look natural and less tightly pulled ponytail.
>Using the leftover hair from the ponytails or additional wefts, wrap the hair around a foam core flat block
>Swirl the end pieces around the visible parts of the foam block to disguise it, ensuring to keep a natural look.

If you want the beak to be moveable, what you do is have the top part of the beak be stationary but have a separate, smaller 'lower jaw' piece that you fit into place on your chin, such that when your mouth is closed the beak is closed and when you open your mouth to talk the beak downs the same.

I didn't make pic related, but this is one I saw at a con earlier this year. Maybe it will give you some ideas.

Hey guys,
So I'm currently helping my boyfriend building a Gang Orca cosplay, especially he want me to build a jaw that can be opened just like in the picture with some Red LEDs on the eyes.
I can totally do the LEDs but I have no clue how should I do this moving jaw, I was wondering if servomotors would be enough to make it move or if i could use straps to attach on my bf's head in order to open the jaw when he opens his.

What you're asking for is very generic to the point of being useless. Different stores have different quality of cosplay, as in a single store can have a good X character but a shit Y character. You need to look for specific designs/models.

If you actually want to get into making cosplay, I highly, highly, HIGHLY recommend you start with modifying existing clothing to suit your need. Go to Goodwill or any thrift store with an open mind (ie. I went looking for either a large, cheap leather jacket for Ryuji from P5 or a pin striped suit for Shuicihi from Drv3. Found no jackets, but found a suit so I did Saihara). A huge amount of characters can be done by just modifying existing clothing, adding new things, etc. Look at tons of concept art to see what you are going to need.

Also, bought cosplays will not help you teach how to make cosplays. I guarantee you that. The way they make them is completely different and they use equipment that a beginner does not need/have/can afford. Additionally, the fabric is generally shit (like the shit you see on Party City costumes because, lo and behold, it's not high quality), unless you want to shell out big bucks. They rarely fit well. Just... no.

( I can't look good in hd photos with my skin and other stuffs). Depends what you're doing. Going to a comic-con -> makeup that looks better IRL. Only photoshooting -> makeup that looks better in pics. Learn Photoshop and any good makeup irl can get good in pictures too.

Honeycolor, PinkyParadise, and Uniqso are pretty reliable sites that sell plano (ie no prescription) contacts. However, contacts are a small enough detail that they're among the last things you should feel obligated to add to your cosplay -- especially if you have dark eyes (at that point, it's a crapshoot on whether or not the contacts will show up against your irises - half of mine are barely visible from a few feet away unless you know that I'm wearing them).

If you end up ordering from one of those sites, some of them don't require a prescription, so you'd be able to just order 0.00 contacts and have them shipped immediately. I'd also recommend meeting with an optometrist on how to practice putting in and caring for contacts.

My rule of thumb is: if the character has normal colored eyes, don't even bother. No one gives that much of a shit and contacts can become an impediment to the flow of a con day to the untrained eye. On the other side of the coin, if they're important to the character but very abnormal (ie. Mina from BNHA), wear with caution and for limited amounts of time.

My one step buttonhole foot on my Brother isn't feeding properly. It's creating a glob of thread on the underside of the fabric. I'm using tear away interfacing. My steps are:

1. Put buttonhole foot on
2. switch to buttonhole stitch
3. pull down and back the buttonhole lever
4. begin the stitch

It's either creating a glob of thread (by not pulling the fabric forward) or it's making the left side of the buttonhole perfect and the right one way too spaced out.

I fiddled with it for 3 hours yesterday and the stupid piece of shit just isn't working. Watched some videos online, they don't help. They don't specify tension, width, or length which I think is the problem.

Yeah, Brother machines with lots of stitches have a nasty birdnesting problem. In my experience they struggle to feed thicker fabrics through properly (I've had that trouble with something as light as cotton drill, so when I say thicker I mean thicker than a single layer of poplin or some shit). The best advice I can give is

>Clean your feed dogs out, and potentially oil them to
>Use really thin thread, if you're happy to splash out go for the proper silk buttonhole thread like Gutermann make
>Stick to a lower speed so go slow so you can help it through with your hands
>For thicker fabrics, press the shit out of the surface you want the buttonhole on first, just to get them softer rand flatter
>For tension, double check it's still good by straight-stitching with the buttonhole foot on first, the extra downwards push it puts on fabric doesn't help, you want it as close to perfect as possible, too tight helps the birdnesting, to loose and the satin stitching comes out puffy and weird

You can glue foam onto PLA with the right type of glue, but it may slightly melt the PLA so be careful. I'm afraid the thermoplastic won't stick though. The apoxie sculpt might stick based on the amazon product description but I haven't used it so I can't confirm.

Nayrt but it depends on the fiber and adhesive. If you don't think that will be enough, you can make a structure to go under. Get floral wire, twice the length from one end of one "bunny ear" to the other over the top of the head and make a loop, you can cover where the ends meet with tape to avoid scratches. Thread it through the wig so it's under the net at the top of the head and comes out on either side at the base of the bunny ears. Make the shape of each bunny ear in foam with a hollow part to put the wire loops in. Paint them in a color close to the wig's, then glue a layer of wig fibers over them. Put them over the wire and secure in place, I would glue them to the wire and then roughly sew them to the wig net. Cover with hair from the wig, you can glue a first layer tightly and then stick a second layer in place with got2be so it looks more natural. The wire will allow you to better control the position of the bunny ears. I'd look at Cowbutt Crunchies' tutorials for more details on covering foam with wig fibers.

Planning to make Jeanne and I am always struggling with fabric choices for my cosplay.

I actually can as an Asian catch a very dark tan, almost close to Karma's skin color but I do not want to suffer the next three years trying to peel that off.
So will it be okay if I use bronzer/a bit darker foundation than my usual one to get my actually possible tone? I don't plan to overdo it to the tone that will never be possible for my race but I'm not sure if it will be okay. I mean, I just don't want to offend anyone but at the same time I want to get as close to the original as possible.
Also Conqueror Karma shares skinline with Conqueror Varus and Varus is a character with a white skin as a default but in this skin his skin (god that sounds confusing) is actually dark-grey but Karma is always like Indian and here she is still like chocolate-brown? Probably I can paint myself gray like Varus? It's not accurate but it's, well, not blackfacing?

You absolutely want to use foam. The texture problem is easy to solve, once you know the trick.

Foam is easy to work with, and something like Gran's armor is really easy to make with it because its largely thin sheets with some shaping and detailing. Working with stiffer materials like plastic or metal will only mean much more work for you that are likely to be less comfortable to wear and maybe even looking less good because they are more difficult.

The tricks to know are to pattern everything with cardstock or cardboard first. For your purposes, 2-4 mm foam sheets (which you can buy in big rolls on amazon for cheap) will make for a good base and you can layer on thinner craft foam as needed to achieve depth and layering for detail. Then you fill in cracks and gaps with caulk, and use a heat gun to seal the outside.

Next step after that is to put on a coating of mod podge to further seal it, and make a slightly harder outer layer that is more damage resistant. Let that dry and do it again.

THEN you spray it with plasti-dip. The end result is a very nice, smooth finish that will look great when you spray it all with silver spraypaint. After you spray everything silver, you'll want to use a small paintbrush and some model paint of a dark metallic color like jet exhaust to add some darkness to inside edges and details so that the distinct shapes *pop* and it all doesn't run together as one silver blob. Then you make a "wash" out of some cheap dark grey paint mixed with a lot of water, and brush that on lightly to the whole thing. This will congregate in nooks and crannies and create a weathering effect.

For the "leather" bits, you can actually still use foam, but doing the same as above but then taking a crushed up ball of tinfoil and rolling it around on top to create a creaky leathery texture. Paint the leather section dark brown, and then layer on lighter browns. I've also had some success with using leather repair "paint".

Other advice includes:

NEVER make a glove or gauntlet from scratch. Hands are complicated, and its easy to gimp yourself by making a 'gauntlet' that has less functionality than an oven mitt. Always buy an existing glove with some stiffness to it (motorcycle or sports gloves are good places to start) and add foam on top to achieve the desired aesthetics, while letting the glove carry the whole "being a glove" part of it.

Watch at least twice as many foam armor tutorials than you think you need. there are always more tricks and tips that people more experienced than you will have figured out.

Always make sure that, at the end of the day, your costume either leaves you with access to pants pockets or has some kind of pouch or something on it that conveniently gives you access to your phone or wallet. this is just a quality of life thing, but I find it helps IMMENSELY on con day and its easy to forget about it until the day of. Likewise, a neat thing you can get is a bottle of stuff called 'anyglove' which you spread on the fingers of your gloves and lets you use a touchscreen even while wearing them. Very handy, having to take off your gloves any time you want to use your phone is a pain.

Oh, and I forgot to mention: don't use EVA Mat foam for this project. Its a good construction material overall, but its much too thick for your specific project. Its great for something like Halo or Mass effect armor, but in your case it would not make for a good profile.

What's the easiest way to re-dye lace trim without having to tear it off? I have a black dress and the lace has faded out to a weird dark green color, but it can't really be removed without tearing apart the entire bodice. What's my best bet to redye it? I was going to try just using India ink and layering foil under the lace and letting it dry, then rinsing the whole thing in dye lock solution? The rest of the dress is colorfast and made of synthetic material whole the lace itself is cotton.

So there's a con that's happening pretty soon that I want to cosplay for.
I'm honestly not too big into anime itself and videogames as a hobby has pretty much ceased since start of college year.
A bunch of friends are going and since the very idea of me cosplaying scares the shit out of me, I find I have to do it.
I used to be into anime and have seen some old school ones, so I know I've the capability to get back into it if I want and I've seen JoJos bizarre up to part 4 and been reading Goblin Slayer since today (loving it), but I've yet to actually pick a character to go as.
I was thinking of doing Goblin Slayer to be honest but I don't know if that'll come off bad on my part. The novel itself has literal rape scenes which, I know, sets the environment really well but also is still a really graphic rape scene and I'm afraid if anyone investigates I'll be branded as "that guy who's into that stuff".

Should I go as Goblin Slayer so? Or should I just pick a random JoJos character instead and play safe?

GS is one of the biggest anime in the West this season, so unless your friends are sjw's (I mean you're going to college and these people do exist, so I have to just check) I don't think anyone will care. For context, SAO had a rape scene this season, and it's about as normalfag of a show as you can get for both Nip and Western audiences.
GS armour itself is quite complex, especially if it's your first time. Try a JoJo one instead, they're more stylised but generally easier and more recocgnisable (especially if it's an anime covered character). I had good success with a Hol Horse+Emperor a while back; remember that JoJo cosplay doesn't always have to be a Jostar

Does anyone have any recommendations on how I could attach these o-rings together?

I've tried tying them together with thread, but so far 3 of the connections have broken. There wont be a ton of tension pulling on them, but obviously I don't want to risk them breaking apart while I'm wearing the costume.

I just tied the thread in a regular double knot. Should I try a different method of tying? Or maybe use stronger thread? Is there a better idea that I'm not thinking of?

For a beginner, this looks awesome so far! The bodice/skirt balance is really nice&flattering on you; in the original design the bodice is kinda long and could easily look off, but you made it look perfect.

The only advice i'd give is making the skirt more "mushroom" shaped with a slighlty tighter row of bottom frills, and giving it more poof.
As for the shoes, you can easily get a pair on ebay. Good luck with your cosplay!

I'm trying to make the helmet of pic related. This is the first big foam design that I've worked on so I'm taking it slow (I've only worked on small accessories like buckles and leg/arm guards prior). I've tried using some basic helmet templates and working from there but nothing gives me the desired shape as I want the helmet to rest low on my head while everything else has resulted in a rather large and unsightly dome shape. I've resorted to trying to free-form the design but it's proving to be a lot more difficult than I was hoping for, especially for a first-timer. Do you guys have any tips, general or specific, because I feel like I'm running into a wall when it comes to this thing. I'd imagine the shape is similar to one of those elongated bicycle helmet without the padding so it rests lower on my head with the bill sitting right above eyebrow-level, only problem is that that padding is what helps hold the helmet into place otherwise the elongated shape should just slide off of the head. The con I'm planning on wearing it is several months away so I'm not in a complete rush but I'm tired of burning money and time on tape and poster boards prototypes that all seem to have the same issues.

The real question here is if you should cosplay in the first place. Cosplay isn't the most comfortable stuff to wear especially if you plan on making an entire armor suit. It's a pain to transfer and put on and generally may not increase you enjoyment if attention isn't your goal. Cosplaying is not a necessity for attending conventions. Many people don't. What cosplay WILL do for you is work as an icebreaker for people and it causes people to start conversations with you.

Also your first costume is gonna suck no matter how hard you try. You won't be happy with it and the Goblin Slayer armor is NOT beginner friendly. Buying a JoJo cosplay is a MUCH safer option, but still make sure you can pull it off well or you'll just get ignored.

i've been lurking here for a long time and i would love to know how you get started at all. I don't have any friends who are into cosplaying or convention-going. Whenever i see people talking going to convetions, it always seems like they're going with people they know from other places. From what i can understand of what i've seen, most countries have local communities, but i don't know where to find these, is it just facebook or are there places (clubs, stores, etc.) where you can meet people that are interested in the same stuff? Same with making outfits in general, it all seems kind of overwhelming at first glance and i know practically nothing, so i'd really appreciate any feedback on the first few steps on even getting into the entire scene at all

It's kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy. You go to a convention with a friend (could be into anime or not, I went to my first con with a close family member who's also a weeb), make friends, and then return with friends to the next con.

Had a kind of similar experience when getting into cosplay. I'm deeply normcore (don't watch anime, mostly cartoons/comics/vidya) and so are most of my friends. I started cosplaying because I like making stuff, so that's the main thrust of what I share if my normie friends ask about what I'm doing (ex, "sewing a dress right now" or "working on the pattern for a coat" or "building some armor" etc)

My cosplaying friends are very different in maturity/energy/life priorities, but they're good company for cons (and honestly I couldn't hang out with them as often as I do with my normie friends).

what thickness is best for making a hat with eva foam? I was going to make a gyro zeppeli hat and thought about making it out of cardboard and putting a layer of eva foam on top but if I can I'd like to make it with just the eva foam, I just don't want to deal with it being super floppy.

Never use cardboard. Ive never made a hat before but I would take two circles of fake leather/canvas/twill/whatever fabric, sew together and turn inside out, and feed a big wire loop against the circumference before sewing it shut.

First and foremost is that neither cosplay nor conventions are cheap. The bigger the con the bigger the price tag as well. It would help if you told us what major city is close to you. It's not personally identifying and people could direct you to local cons/meetups/groups.

There is a friend finder thread if you prefer people who have a 4chan style of humor, but I really wouldn't recommend it. I've tried it and didn't end up being friends with anyone I met through it. Facebook is a much safer option, but still be careful out there!

As far as cosplay is concerned, the biggest thing first timers do that gets them turned off is they try to make something way beyond their skill level. For your first con, I'd suggesting buying a costume rather than making and seeing if it's your scene.

What are some decent stores online to buy solid color fabrics from?

I've been terribly frustrated for a few months off and on trying to get the perfect color for this LWA coat. Joann, amazon, etsy, ebay, everything I order comes in either too bright, too faded, or in some way doesn't match what I'm looking for. Its VERY frustrating, although its probably my fault for being autistic trying to get it 100% perfect.

If you've already got all of those fabrics on hand and they're not 100% polyester, have you thought about dyeing them? I think a combination of taupe and pearl grey RIT (depending on which red you're starting with) will let you tweak towards the color precisely, do swatch tests. It's at least more controllable than buying offline.

I live pretty close to copenhagen, so i'm guessing that's where it goes down. Conveniently, i live near the 2 major cons, so that's a plus. And what money is concerned, it isn't a big problem, my day to day is pretty much just working, studying and working out, and my hobbies are incredibly cheap, so i have a lot of money in excess. I dyed a jumpsuit slightly darker and I don't love how the zippers now stand out (they're painted to match the original jumpsuit color). Would it be an enormous pain in the ass to change out the sliders (or even just the zipper pulls) for more metallic ones? I want to buy a hex fabric in light blue but haven't had much luck after looking for a few hours and spending the day in local fabric places.

Planning to cosplay Shirou Muramasa sometime next May. A complete cosplay noob, at least in terms of making my own cosplay, but perfectly willing to learn. Is there any starting pointers on what you guys would recommend?

For the cape, I think it should be essentially two layers, but unsure which are the proper material/fabrics I should use to get a high quality cape. Maybe cotton with a satin lining?

In some of his reference pictures, he has neon-blue magic circuits designs all arounnd his chest area, debated on getting some neon-blue EL tape and seeing if I could loop a power inverter and make a frame design to mimic the effect. Not sure how the tape would fare if I'm walking about around con and attend panels. I feel like if I slightly twisted my body the wrong way, all the EL tape would come loose or something.

So I made a large, round, hello kitty like mascot head. It's huge, extending past my shoulders, and totally hollow inside. I followed a tutorial on how to make the head and it looks great, but it's totally hollow inside. This means it flops around on my neck and gives me a headache. I think the white layer is a haori, not a cape; I see a sleeve and a himo. A thing you could do for the lining is to buy a cheap satin kimono bathrobe and cut it up for fabric. An accurate fabric choice for the outside would be any crepe finish fabric (to imitate chirimen) or something like dupioni or shantung (to imitate tsumugi).

Blue retroreflective tape would be a low-tech option for magic circuits, it'd at least be shiny enough under flash photography.

Need some advice on the painting of this when I finish priming and sanding it, particularly the grip portion. I've heard a few things I can do, which ranges from spray painting it with plastidip and making little diagonal cuts to make a textured grip look, to dry painting it black, to painting it black with a bit of fine sand to give it a texture. Anyone have experience and can give me some advice?

Since these have really curvy organic shapes, I think I might do them out of pink foam insulation, you can carve and sand it to get nice soft-looking curves. To make a smooth surface for painting you can finish the foam with brushed-on layers of clear epoxy (Envirotex Lite is sold at Michaels and is cheap if you coupon it; buy disposable brushes for this 'cause epoxy ruins them) or layers paper mache + gesso.

epic is significantly better for long wigs because their fibers are smooth and can be untangled extremely easily. arda has more realistic color mixes but the one long arda wig i got was a total fucking nightmare to work with. it shed so much that i had to buy extra wefts to sew in. within a week it was so tangled that the bottom strands were permanently fried after i tried to comb it and i had to chop a full 2 inches off

tl;dr, how to fill in a gap between horns and skin?
Made a set of horns for this character, but there's a slight gap between the edges of the horns and my forehead (I didn't curve the bases enough). How do I fill in the gap? Build up layers of liquid latex while resting the horns on my face until they fit uniformly? Stuff tissue paper and spirit gum into the gap, and do liquid latex over that? Use scar wax?

Generally you make some kind of clover-leaf/U/H-shape out of wire, with the free ends embedded + glued into the foam as far as you can get them and then backpack or bra style straps attached to the loops to hold it against your back. You can tint vinyl it with iDye Poly, depending on how much of a color change you need (I've seen someone do pale yellow -> canary yellow, for example). Really prewash the hell out of it with a degreasing soap like dishwashing detergent before you try.

"good" is a relative term.
There's probably about 10 or so dropshipping or AliExpress stores that either sell a common cosplay or make one from a common pattern, but as with pretty much all bought cosplays, the materials are not going to be good and it will not 100% fit you like a commissioned one will, though it'll be about 25%-30% of what a commission would run you.

Just go search on AliExpress or the number of EZCosplay/etc stores until you find one that works. They'll pretty much all be good enough to wear and have fun in at a convention, but none of them will really be that spectacular.

It makes sense to make one yourself if you already have the tools and the skills, but if you're starting from no experience, sometimes it's better to just drop the $100-150 or so on an AliExpress cosplay and focus on other skills like prop making, wig styling, makeup, etc so you're not overwhelmed with all these tools and skills you need to pick up at the start.

People in the past have done cosplays where the armor/clothes sit in front of them and they hide their real body. Look up the invisible man cosplay that went around a few months ago. You could do something similar and use the cape to hide where your body really is

So I'm currently in the planning stages for a cosplay for later this year that'll take quite a bit of learning along the way. I'm fairly stuck with one specific part though.

It's a bit hard to explain, but I basically need a hula hoop to be floating around my waist. The support doesn't have to be completely invisible, but I'm still not sure how to go about it, and still make it light, sturdy, and subtle.
I'm also only wearing a bodysuit, so there aren't a lot of places to hide support pieces. Any advice at all is super appreciated, for materials, or building ideas.

Contrary to the other anon, I think some parts of it are definitely doable as starter pieces, since Jax has a lot of loose, baggier items that don't require close tailoring (and if you keep your expectations reasonable that it might not be god-tier on the first try).

For someone with moderate cosplay and handsewing experience, the amount of fabric here looks like the sewing would take at least a month or two itself; for you, expect the full build time to take even longer (allow yourself at least four months, assuming that you'll be trying to replicate this as accurately as possible)

I agree with >>10073312. It's fantastic that you're ambitious and willing to plunge forward, but definitely do your research first. Hand sewing that whole beast would take a lifetime to finish. Consider using hem tape instead. It's an iron-on adhesive that you sandwich between fabric to give you clean looking lines. Before heading to your fabric store, consider pillaging your linen closet for an old set of sheets (even fitted is fine if you cut off the ends). A trial piece is definitely going to give you a good idea of how much fabric you'll need, what alterations you'll need to make, and how to improve for your final piece. I definitely wouldn't consider this a cheap or beginner friendly costume, but chase your dreams anon. Go slow, be patient, bounce back from every failure, and dedicate yourself to learning. The learning curve is slow and steep, but you'll get it.

Is it possible to modify an existing pair of jeans so that they can have this flair at the bottom?

I needed epaulets of unusual size and color added onto a costume coat of mine. I took the spare material I had down to a dry cleaners that did alternations and paid the lady there a reasonable price to make them and sew them on. They are a pretty easy sewing project if you know what you are doing, I just don't know what I am doing.

Dyed a garment with Rit - initially with powder then added a second shade with liquid. Didn't really like how the color developed so I did one of these in the washing machine and it doesn't seem to have done anything.

Should I try using two boxes? I'd rather not drop another $10 on something that isn't effective. Maybe bleach? I'd try the stovetop method but the garment is pretty bulky and I don't have a big enough pot for it. Usually I use my sink for dyeing but the instructions don't say anything about that.

I want to cosplay more revealing characters as a male, but I'm worried my parents will be very judgemental or disapproving of my hobby.
I'm not sure how to handle something like this without any risky decisions.

I've been cosplaying for about seven years now, so of course this is just my experience, but it's kind of complicated. Being in North America is definitely going to give you an easier time, I hear that in Europe & Asia they're a bit more critical of you trying to match the skin colour of the character.
Blatant hate, you're probably not going to get. You will likely hear people calling you the "brown" or "black" version of characters. Like "Hey, I love your brown Zero Two cosplay!" instead of just recognizing you as the character. You'll also probably hear people exclusively suggesting similarly toned characters for you to cosplay. Occasionally, you'll get rude people who'll leave comments about how the skin colour looks weird or bad. But I'd be surprised if you got harassed in the current community.

You do have to go into it knowing, though, that no matter how hard you work, and how quality your cosplays are, you probably won't end up with the same success of someone who's white or asian. It's just not likely. I can count on one hand the number of dark-skinned cosplayers I'd consider "cosfamous" (and they're all female, and lean more towards provocative content). But if you're in it for fun, that probably won't matter to you.

Basically, of course it varies from place to place, but I wouldn't expect hate. Your experience will probably be different than that of someone fair-skinned though.

I bought a cheap $20 6-hoop hoop skirt, and it's the kind that has a drawstring to secure. I can't seem to securely tie it so that it won't slip off my waist and drag along the ground. What sort of knot am I supposed to use?

I posted in the last thread but I'm still struggling. I have a foam head that's after 2 ft tall and round, and totally hollow inside. When it is on my shoulders, it wobbles.
Per CGL's suggestion I grabbed a helmet, but because of the season cannot find a pool noodle, and not sure how to attach a pool noodle to foam/a helmet.
The head extends at least a foot above my head, so I have to fill the gap between the helmet with something. Normal upholstery foam seems like it would be expensive and hot. I thought maybe styrofoam- but how connect it to the helmet/head? Then I thought maybe something like a back brace that extends into the head to keep it from falling forward but I'm struggling on execution. Pls send help.

Hi guys. I have an almost nonexistent knowledge of sewing and whatnot, but I want to put together a cosplay for AX this year. I want to go as Sanageyama from Kill la Kill as a group with some friends. His outfit is pretty simple and I can more or less experiment with foam to figure out the tricky bits with one exception...for the coat.

I know there's some reproductions of it online but they all look kind of cheap and inaccurate. This lead me to wondering if anyone knew good go-to shops or anything for cosplays with long coats barring making the whole thing from scratch which I definitely can't pull off. Looked around on Amazon but didn't find much.

What should I do to get the effect of his arm? Red rubber bands?

I don't think you're going to be able to find anything off-the-rack that will have the correct amount of standing collar and flare for you to modify from. Modifications to make the eBay repro one less shitty would be pretty involved (removing the lining, adding gores + suppressing the waist to get the flare, taking in the sleeves).
Do you have any friends who sew? McCalls pattern M7374 is about the shape you need with only minor adjustments to the lapels, might be easier to find a commissioner if you can save them drafting work.

You've got two problems: you need to add volume, and you need to make the flayed texture. I would look up tutorials for muscle suit padding to get the shapes and tutorials for exposed muscle sfx makeup makeup to see how to create the illusion of that texture using paint. You're gonna be using acrylic/fabric paint instead of makeup but the colors and strategies will be the same.

- look up actual sewing techniques, don't be tempted to use shortcuts (e.g making sure you aren't using a long seam length on curves, doing separate seams on corners rather than just dropping the needle and rotating the fabric, remembering to trim all your threads)

- don't be scared to line garments

1/2 in. here. It really depends on what they're doing. Like sleeve cuffs and collars which need less for sharp corners. I've made clothing with half inch seam allowances and it's not something of super importance while still making the garment look nice as long as they're pressed open or have some kind of finish like surging or specialty seams (french/flat felled ect)

What I would experiment with, having never done that particular sort of project before, is this:

You use a very soft, flexible foam to form the bulk of the muscle, basically just padding. You then layer, on top of that, strands of twine held in place with some kind of glue or rubber cement. More than one layer, all going the same direction, to give the 'fiber' aesthetic of the muscle.

I would then spray the whole thing with plastidip. This should 'smooth out' the texture of the twine and fill in little gaps, turning the twine into a textured surface.

An advantage here is that you can do this same thing to make the 'hanging' muscle strands that on his arms and stuff, and then affix one end onto the muscle sleeves.

I would test this on a small patch, a single 'muscle group' for lack of a better term, and make sure that the resulting shape and texture is something you are happy with.

If you like how it looks, for painting purposes: you want to start with a very dark red as a base that covers everything, and then layer on a brighter red that covers MOST of the strands but doesn't fill in all of the little gaps. Then you lightly brush on a pinkish color onto the very outermost parts of the surface as a highlight. This should give is a sufficiently fleshy appearance.

I've been looking for a wool or p/leather replacement and I've only found "wine red" aka purple and 80 dollar name brand high fashion leather gloves.

I own like ten pairs of leather/pleather gloves and they cost me like nothing all black or brown. I can find wool gloves in every color except bright red.

I want basically a cheap pair of women's or men's tight fitting gloves that will look the part and not fall apart in a single con. I still have other things to buy for him and other cosplay to work on, so I'd like to avoid buying Gucci or whatever for this.

I can fit into most ladies gloves that have stretch to them.

If you can find what you want, but not in the right color, can you dye it or paint it the shade of red you want instead? That seems like it should work, though obviously you wouldn't do this to an expensive pair.

Side note: Anyglove is an application you can put on the fingertips of your gloves so you can still use phone touchscreens without having to take your gloves off every time. Generally just very useful as a quality of life thing for costumes with gloves. It does turn the fingertips black, but its generally worth the trade IMO.

I will warn you, another big reason I go for PP over honeycolour or uniqso is that they have tons of pictures of people actually wearing them irl, in different lighting. Twine has too many loose strands. Decorative coording or trim would be a better fit, but only with one that isn't too tightly wound.

It looks like a long sleeve shirt with a standing collar. The pattern you linked is for a puffer / bomber jacket which is too heavy, too thick, and too textured for the garment you're going for. I'd suggest using this one instead: I'd suggest using this pattern instead: https://www.simplicity.com/simplicity-storefront-catalog/patterns/men/simplicity-pattern-8705-mens-pantsshorts-and-knit-pullover-top/.. You'll need to add interfacing sandwiched between the layers of the collar fabric to get it to stay upright and uphold the weight of the buttons / grommets or whatever. Based on other knights' undershirts I've seen, I'd suggest pure cotton. It's breathable and looks the part. If the collar isn't tall enough for you, that's where I'd suggest altering the pattern.

I'm working on Ryoma as my first cosplay for AX. I got two questions. First is what kind of wig do I need to get his hair right? Second is should I make the scarf static to get that wind blowing effect. His scarf is never down and resting.

Use wire or wire ribbon to keep the scarf up and poseable. For the wig, any thick chin to shoulder length wig will do. It'll just require some styling. If that section of hair towards his chin is a side burn, you'll need an entirely different wig though. Or just separate attachable sideburns.

I'm working on a Danny Phantom cosplay for PAX this year. Does anyone know how I might be able to work out the D on his chest? The best ideas I can think of is an iron-on design, which in my opinion would look cheap, or some sort of fabric insignia sewn on, but I'm not sure about how that might turn out.
I'm also having some trouble with his belt. I'm putting together a Peter B Parker outfit, for lazy con days when I don't want to wear something more complex. The mismatched shoes are a fun part of the look, but the problem is that Converses have low soles and boots have real thick ones, so I end up limping (or at least walking uncomfortably) from the imbalance.
How can I counter this? Make a 'platform' for the sneaker? buy some thrift-store boots and chop up the soles 'til they're thinner? Do they make work/hiking-style boots with thin soles?

Sew the symbol separately, turn it out, then top stitch it to the chest of the body suit. Make sure to give a good press. I'd suggest just using a stretchy matching fabric and making a simple tall loop with it. You can attach it straight to the suit or add a hook & eye on the back. Or velcro. Platform converse exist, but you could easily stuff the converse with an insole or batting to give you the lift. You could hack up a pair of boots, but that'd require lifting the foot padding and somehow scraping out the thick rubber without damaging the exterior or removing the sole entirely (which will be mighty difficult), shaving it, and reapplying it with the hope that it'll stay. Imo opt for the 2nd solution.

As far as videogame and nerd culture stuff, PAX and ComicCon are the big ones. We've got 3 PAX cons in the US: East, South and West. East is held in Boston, South in San Antonio TX and West is in LA I believe. ComicCon is in San Diego but I think there's smaller ComicCon spinoffs in places like NYC.

If you have already sewed and turned out the D before top stitching, then it should be fine, but do a test run on some scrap fabric, just to be sure. Stretchy fabric is notoriously hard to use and can pucker without the right care. On your scrap fabric, try using a bunch of different weights and lengths to see how it acts. Use a zigzag stitch. Try sewing it while stretching the fabric and then not doing it. You can change the tools you use such as a stretch needle and a walking foot. Or you could add interfacing to the edges to insure that it doesn't pucker. If you don't mind using a quick and dirty method, you could sew the D then adhere it to the costume with hem tape or double sided interfacing.

Also don't forget to trim your seam allowances after sewing so that you get crisp points when you turn it out.

Never been to a con before. How far ahead in advance am I supposed to book a hotel room for a con? Tried to book for Ohayocon in December, but no rooms (understandably). Then I tried to find rooms for Colossalcon, no rooms at all. Then I looked for rooms for Matsuricon thinking SURELY a con that's eight months away will have some hotel rooms available, but it doesn't look like it. Am I just fucked for going to any cons in Ohio this year, or would it still be worth it to get an Airbnb or something?

Colossalcon is literally 15 mins from my house, my sister works there. We have a load of hotels and resorts in this area. Just look around and you'll probably be able to find something within 15-20 mins of the resort.
