Didn’t see one in the catalogue so let’s do this, questions you have that don’t deserve a whole thread.

Mine is: what hairspray do you use to style your wigs? The wig I’m styling doesn’t need anything intense or gravity defying but I do need it to hold while I go about my day. Also wondering, what is the best way to wash it out? I’m just styling the bangs and hoping to be able to restyle it for later uses. My wig is from Arda if that matters.

Brushed out takes care of most of the spray. Don't brush it out over your clothes, you will look like you are made of dandruff from the hairspray flakes.
For multiple coats of heavy spray you will still need to wash at some point.

Anyone knowns why plastic surgery general tread has been deleted (had it open on my phone and after waking up it didn't want to update because deletion)? It was up yesterday and we had the tread multiple times before without issues if I recall correctly so I don't think it's not allowed? Archive doesn't show too much unusual happened either.

It was nice to talk about it with people who can relate with a similar view in fashion and appearance. Especially since changes affect how we look in lolita (or cosplay for that matter) and people not in to that have very little sense for the style.

Not sure if this deserves its own thread or not.

How do you make a good cosplay of a character that... doesn't not have any defining features persay (unless that applies), but looks like, a typical person? Doesn't wear any crazy outfits or accessories?

Pic related. Even if I don't do end up doing him, he's a perfect example. Usual outfit is just a business outfit of sorts, and I don't know how the fuck anyone is supposed to recognize that I'm actually cosplaying if I'm just wearing a business outfit or something like that.

>> No.10015297

>>10015294
A group is about your only real option, but if all of the characters are that non-distinctive, nobody's going to recognize you still. An example that I've done before is being Rock from Black Lagoon. Alone, nobody knows who the fuck I am, paired with a Revy and a Dutch, not a problem.

Honestly they don't even have to recognize me. I just want it to be apparent I'm cosplaying SOMEBODY, and aren't a con-attendee happening to be dressed well, and wearing a wig. Like something like the following, but less cringy:
>>10015302
For fuck's sake I had forgotten about Trashy Touma too.
You [guys] don't think using a prop to help distinguish the character is bad then? I thought that would be more of a sin. I don't want my entire cosplay to ride on a prop, but, if it's really not as bad as I thought, maybe I'll have a change of heart.

Again, it doesn't have to be him I'll do, but pic related is the best-looking solo cosplay I can find quick enough of him. Like it's apparent it's SOMEBODY, even if not specifically who. And I think the prop helps (it isn't anything specific from the series, dude just likes books), but in my opinion it also doesn't ride on the props.

I'm sure this has been asked plenty times before, but:

How much of the cosplay do I have to make myself for it to be considered cosplay? What distinguishes a costume (Halloween or otherwise) from a cosplay? Does none of that matter? It seems there's blurred lines and I have a compulsive need to use the right terms, but that's if there is a right and wrong time to call it one or the other.

>> No.10016258

>>10016164
Sintra has a smooth surface although if you get it hot enough you can end up getting fingerprints in it and such. It also doesn't stick to itself, it needs to be glued. But it's much cheaper and you pretty much only need to sand the edges if you don't get any marks on the surface.

>> No.10016259

>>10016257
You should find an answer that sounds good to you. There's no right answer because it's a matter of personal opinion.

>What distinguishes a costume (Halloween or otherwise) from a cosplay?
When you're doing cosplay you're impersonating a precise character, not just a generic figure like a monk or a fairy. And there's also the "play" part: you should talk and act like that character.

Don't do this. Only consider this for small pieces with little detail, like belt buckles and such. Metal working has a nearly infinitely steeper learning curve than working with foam, and it is also incredibly more expensive, and usually requires the building of a forge. Cosplay isn't as particular as something like the SCA with what materials are used, so just go with thermoplastic or foam. There are plenty of ways to make it look as realistic as possible without resorting to using real metal.

I'm already stocking up on flatback rhinestones, but how the hell do I attach them? Most of them don't have holes so sewing is out of the question, fabric glue is always shitty for me, and I'd rather not hot glue if I can help it.
Basically what are good strong adhesives for sticking plastic/metal to fabric?

Pretty sure it's because that's not really on topic for the board - while it is prevalent in lolita and cosplay, it's not as common as make up which can be tied to both and related to either whereas plastic surgery is not related, just used in both sometimes. Make up is much more common too.

Not to mention I saw people talking about dental surgery and the likes. Fitness threads are disallowed for the same reason because dental stuff has nothing to do with lolita or cosplay, it has to do with how people look and believe it or not, this is not the board to discuss how people look. That would be /fit/.

If they weren't deleted in the past, it's because there are new janni's most likely. I saw the janni update site wide. Janni's can also be lazy as all hell at getting stuff deleted. Mods don't care unless something is REALLY breaking rules.

>>10015294
I'm gonna disagree with the other two replies and say it's possible, but you need a prop. You need something that blatantly shows what series you are from, and you need to nail the accuracy of your wig and makeup. Don't over-style it, but get that shape just right. If your character carries a particular item that's unique, or if there is an in-series gag that is well known enough that you can make some kind of visual representation out of it (a sign, some kind of backdrop if you don't mind wearing that) or maybe there's a mascot if your series has one and you can get a plush. Learn your character's body language and carry yourself with it, poses and resting casually, and all. May be a bit LARPy, but if someone is a fan of the character you may pop out of a crowd to them at a glance.

Outside of that, yeah, a group is your best bet. But it's not impossible. Resign yourself that if you want good pics, schedule with a photographer and pick a location that really represents your show's theme so that even online you'll at least have a bit of uniqueness to your stuff. It'll set you apart from the closet cosplays of the same character.

What is the best way to add the red triangles? I feel that painting them on would not look good, so my options are to either sew red triangles on top of the white hem, which makes me worry about fraying or line crispness, or removing sections of white and replacing with red.

Thank you in advance for any help!

Trust me you do not want to do option 3. Unless you really really want to.
I made one of those robes before and I cut out the triangles, ironed on double sided adhesive (forgot the name) and ironed them onto the robe. I didn’t have to worry about fray check because the iron on sealed the edges. But you can baste the triangles onto the robe and then satin stitch around the edges of you want a nice look, it is time consuming a little. But if you paint them with fabric paint it won’t look bad.

If you don't actually need to be recognizeable then the only two major signs you need are your wig and your makeup. The more unnatural you go with these two options, the more obvious you are that you're styled for the camera and not in-person, and the more obvious it will seem to the average congoer that you're way overdone for just attending a con.

With wigs, chose a shade that's brighter/more saturated than you actually need, it looks less natural. Then, even if your character has limp hair, gel it down until it doesn't move in the wind. Trust me, this looks unnatural as fuck in person and will be one of the most obvious signs you're styled as a character and not as yourself.

Second, cake on the foundation and makeup. We're talking theatrical-levels of caked on makeup. At barest minimum you'll want foundation that doesn't move throughout the con, can't sweat it off -- you're gonna want the works: primer, face paint, sealer, etc. Then you'll want to colour in your eyebrows a shade darker than your wig, outline your eyes with thick eyeliner (look up wing shapes if you need enlongate or change your eye shape), and your ref has their lips covered in foundation in order to look closer to their character. All these things look good on camera but will look unnatural in person, and people will pick up on that.

At that point you'll pretty much look like a fake person, but if you want to take it further, then circle lenses and "new" clothes will also help. Circle lenses already look unnatural, but if you pick a colour that's a touch brighter than your character's eyes, they'll be really noticeable in person as well. For clothes, definitely clean clothes is a start, but you can also starch the shirt so it looks stiffer and less natural.

I mean, at that point you might still not be recogniseable unless you have a prop as people can't quite place which source you're from, but you'll definitely look like you're cosplaying something.

A lot of eBay sellers tag it as "Korean office wear" or "Korean office lady", using that search term in google with get you a ton of images (and sellers), then you can reverse image search it through taobao to find it for cheaper.

No real search terms for starting with taobao, though you can start with something like "women's blouse" and then usually there's a few options to chose "princess style" or "korean style"

Japan, you can try looking for "girly" style, but it's very hit-and-miss as it just means, well, "girly".

Just to clarify, that's not what actual Korean office worker bees wear, they're actually every bit as boring as everywhere else.

It's just what most eBay, or English-speaking sellers that tag any fancy/cutesy clothes as "Korean office", and there's enough of them that you can run searches for it and come up with that aesthetic. That's why it doesn't work on taobao (where the clothes actually come from) or Japanese sites.

>> No.10051100

>>10050100
>>10050648

The number varies with each release. At minimum you can count on every store having at least one of each cut/print.

But what happens is if a dress seems to be really hyped up they'll delay release and make more of that particular dress. So something like Chess Chocolate or CDC is much easier to find secondhand despite being highly popular, because AP already anticipated it would sell really well and made more dresses. On the other hand, something like Menuet Bouquet isn't that popular, not really hyped up and AP doesn't expect to sell a lot of it, so they cut the number of dresses being produced. So even though Menuet Bouquet is way less popular, it's still harder to find than Chess Chocolate, because there's less copies of it.

That's why general advice, if you really, really, REALLY like an AP release, just buy it. You never know if it's one of those with really low stock numbers and you never ever see it for resale again, ever.

You aren't building up enough of a base. From what I can see you're using horizontal strands of hair which is going to fall over like a piece of paper. You want to use a cone like structure. The center strand should be teased to build height and stability and hairsprayed. Then you layer on the strands of hair that will be shown, gently comb them over the teased bunch and hairspray. It also looks like you have too much hair up at the tip which is forcing you to twist them rather than a pointy spike. Before gelling, try thinning out the point. You're not too far off though. I find it a lot more tolerable to do this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DU88Q9mg5ME

tl;dr
1. add extra length to one side of the tube
2. sew a long thread several times through one point of this extra length
3. push the needle + thread through the inside of the tube
4. start pulling on it when it comes out of the other end
5. gently grip the tube with your main hand as you're pulling with your offhand, as the tube turns inwards

super duper easy to turn and much easier than using tubes or dowels or w/e

If I'm reading this right, the collar keeps trying to open up towards your back while you want it to curl around your neck, right?

- When sewing it, you can make the inner band shorter (not by much, maybe a cm), ease the difference so the stitches aren't wrinkled. The inside being shorter will pull the outside to wrap around it, curving the piece.

- Failing that, you can try wrapping the collar around something heatproof (a bat maybe?), tie it down wrapped like that, and use a steam iron to press it to the curved shape.

Assuming you're not having some patterning issues.

Yeah, the collar in question is pic related's jacket

I thought about making the inner band shorter trick as that's what I used for traditional collars, but this one has backing in it (808 craftfuse specifically which is pretty strong). I added it so it would stand vertically. Not sure if it will handle stretching with that stuff attached but I'll give it a whirl

When I zip the test jacket up, the collar fits right. When it's unzipped (as it is supposed to be), the collar bends outwards at the front (keeps trying to "spring back" into shape)

the heating trick is what I thought as well, and I'll try it again

desu this is self-drafted so I'm just improvising on a test jacket before I actually jump into good material

thanks

how weird is it to wear the same coord every once and awhile as a daily lolita. ive gotten a big enough wardrobe to wear it everyday, but cof make me feel like every outfit needs to be different. i dont plan on posting them online, but its been making me feel boring.

I would say to wear what you like in the everyday and post what you like on your own page or SM accounts or pages but don’t duplicate a coord in a photo post to any lolita group or site unless you actually have changed something quite visible within the coord, otherwise you are just posting same content, different day which is fine to document to yourself but not so interesting to share.
I catch myself falling into a rut with this one dress because it’s so easy to throw on but I’ve made sure not to post it often and to change up the coord when I do.
The topic itself would makes good blog post though, cause I am now curious how often people will repeat both a dress and a whole coord.

Hello! I'm a beginner sewer and I just finished my first project - a skirt with elastic in the waistband. I was able to slide the skirt over my head, but I wasn't able to slide it up and down my hips. I used elastic like pic related (although I can't remember the exact width. Probably 1/2 or 1/4). What type of elastic should I have used instead? Or was the mistake in not giving enough length in the fabric for the skirt to stretch?

>> No.10066381

>>10066380
It probably doesn't have enough length or your waist is just super small compared to your hips. I have a hard time getting some skirts over my hips as well. Sadly over the head is the best way unless you want to redo the elastic and add a couple inches. (2inches should be a safe bet.) The elastic should be relaxed at your waist not snug or really tight! Always remember when you're sewing your measurements to allow some extra for comfort of wearing the garment. inch or two is usually okay depending on the fabric.

I would say yes, but there are so many newer lolita's it's easily hidden. SouffleSong is generally low quality crap, and any seasoned lolita will see that at an instant. There have also been some not so positive rumours on the designer.

Haenuli has better quality, but is often considered a fatty-chan brand because they are kinda overpriced and many heavily overweight ita's wear it because they gather to them.

But as someone with some bigger breast and curves I can tell you that in general, not all brands are entirely off-limits. Just pay attention to pattern and not just sizing (else the body in the front will rise up). There are also tons of custom sizing options on TaoBao and with indie brands, many of which offer better quality than SouffleSong for the same price.

That should work for the boxy pieces as well, but if it doesn't you can glue in some wire supports layered between the hair. With that much hair, you'll want to sew in a few wig clips too (one at each temple, one or two at the top, two behind the ears, and on at the base of your neck will be more than enough).

I can't express this enough, but good luck. Personally,,I wouldn't attempt this during a crunch time because of the sheer amount of work you'll need to put into this to pull it off. But, that's your choice.

Well I'm at the point to where I'm gonna use the ponytail clip that came with the wig (again not going to be nearly as long or big). Yeah unfortunately looks like I might not be able to do all that in time, but it at least gives me an idea on what I can do. I've got some wires that SHOULD support it upright. Worst case scenario I'm just not high ponytail Hilda, which is fine. Thank you so much anon

Would do if I really, really like the character. The lack of call-outs by people and the lack of social media attention is going to sting no matter what you do if I'm honest.

If you're making it, I would deffo go for it, mostly because you'll be able to wear that jacket casually with no weird glances. I really like dogwhistle weeb clothing, so I would double do it if I could wear it casually.

Thanks! I will go pick up some shadow singles this weekend and try it out. Would liquid primer help everything stay since the facepaint is water based or is that a waste of money?

He is correct.
I'm a total noob in therms of cosplay, but a decent cyclist.
Besides ordering jersey, shorts and helmet I'm probably going to vinyl-wrap my frame+shoes and re-wrap my handlebars in white.
Probably adds another ~200-300g but it's not like I'd race that way.

There is another question I have about it:
How can I make my hair look appropriate?
It is far too long and the wrong color, but a wig under a helmet might not fit.

Yeah, liquid primer is fine. I actually don't know of a primer that isn't liquid. Just make sure to wait a minute for it to dry before putting on the facepaint. Worst case scenario, you have yourself some good primer to use for another look.

Do wig under helmet, just loosen the inner part of the helmet/remove padding as necessary. If you're at a con you're not going to be wearing the helmet around the whole time, so people will see your hair/the wig.

So I'm currently in the planning stages for a cosplay for later this year that'll take quite a bit of learning along the way. I'm fairly stuck with one specific part though.

It's a bit hard to explain, but I basically need a hula hoop to be floating around my waist. The support doesn't have to be completely invisible, but I'm still not sure how to go about it, and still make it light, sturdy, and subtle.
I'm also only wearing a bodysuit, so there aren't a lot of places to hide support pieces. Any advice at all is super appreciated, for materials, or building ideas.

Does it have to be completely centered? You could definitely get away with a back or hip attachment if it's mid swing.

I didn't read the bodysuit portion, fuck. That does make things difficult. Maybe you could wear an elastic band underneath the bodysuit, add stabilizer to the fabric, and have some thin support poles sticking out into the hoop - if that makes sense?

how do I make the white padded Vest Goblin Slayer wears under his armour. I asked for a commision and it would be ~90€.
Is this price reasoable or shuold I try it on my own?

>> No.10075068

>>10075061
If you don't own a sewing machine nor have any knowledge of using one, I'd say go for the commission. I have a hard time saying that any commission price is to high considering the amount of labor that tends to go into these pieces. Ask for a price breakdown to ensure that you know where your money is going. Perhaps ask if you can use lower quality fabric to bring the cost down?

>> No.10075072

i own a used sewing machine and used it once for sewing some fabric togehter, but for the commision the price consists of 70€ for work alone, the material comes to 20-50€ without the fur collar.

If you have the time, try it on your own first. I looks like you could use batting between the layers of cotton fabric. They're both breathable and you'll need the puffiness to help achieve the look. What fabric was the commissioner going to use?

thanks for the tip with the batting, i think i will try sewing btw,Is a sewing pattern hard to make or is it just like one for Eva Foam?

>> No.10076205

>>10075878
Happy to help. It's similar to that of EVA foam, but you need to add 1/2 inch of seam allowance to all sides to account for the places you're going to sew. A pattern isn't too hard but in my experience it takes a couple of tries to get right. Or you can alter an existing pattern. To make your own, you can use saran wrap and tape on your body, mark the lines, then cut it into pieces where you see the lines in the image. Transfer the shapes onto paper and mark them neatly so that you remember what goes where. If you have any spare old linen like a bed sheet, use it to make a mock up. Repeat the process of trying it on, adjusting it to your body, and then once you're ready move on to the real fabric. Good luck! Come on back if you have any questions.

So I've been wanting to cosplay as Eila from Strike Witches but I haven't been able to find a good wig for her.
Would anyone here be able to recommend one that looks decently similar?
