My first and last cosplay was Orochimaru at the age of 14. I forced my poor mom to buy me a shitty, Chinese costume + wig from eBay for my birthday. Got some cheap purple eyeliner and smeared it all around my eyes. I never went to a con or something in it because I was too socially anxious, but I wore it around the house now and then. Unsurprisingly, the quality was really bad and it fell apart the same year. I still have the trousers from that costume though, they’re comfy to chill and work out in at home.
No pictures exist of me wearing it, which is probably a good thing, but it looked like pic related.

Technically Cassidy from Team Rocket in 5th grade, my grandma made the dress for me, I actually wore it years later to a con in my 20s. I don't know how it still fit me since I'd went up 4 cup sizes since then along with weight.
First one I did for myself was Grovyle by that artist who did a bunch of human pokemon that was based off one of the killer chicks in that anime/dating sim. That poor wig and cheap fabric skirt.

my first cosplay was a terrible Souls Evans cosplay back in 2011 with props made out of craft foam (not even painted just foam on the closest color to the prop), luckly or sadly, I lost the pics from that con, and I haven't seen any pics of said cosplay appear around.

Potato quality but this was Fanime 2000, when digital cameras were a myth and people went to cons with disposables. God the early 00s was a fun era of conventions.

Me and my best friend did kanna and lucoa for our first cosplays (I’m kanna) I ended up doing the shawl design with embroidery, but that was the only thing I changed after this pic, it was also my first time doing much sewing at all, I know it’s not the greatest but I’m just proud I sewed it rather than buying it

It's a blessing for all of our eyes that there isn't a picture of my first """cosplay""". My cousin and I found out about anime conventions while casually scrolling the internet (I think we were watching amvs or something) and that there was one in our area happening that weekend (AX 2009). After managing to convince our families to let us go, pay for the tickets, and get our oldest cousin to take us, we decided that we wanted to wear costumes too.
In a fervor, we threw together the most god awful costumes humanly possible. We were in the middle of a Death Note craze so I put on black jeans and an inside out or backwards (can't remember which) white long sleeve shirt, messy eyeliner under my eyes, and did absolutely nothing to my medium length brown hair. My cousin borrowed a yellow-ish blazer, white button up, and red tie from her parents and put her long blonde hair into a low bun. The next day, we walked the con as two like 9-12 year old trash heaps. Oh and she brought a little notebook to write in as we walked and I had the tip of my thumb in my mouth, because of course we did. I remember getting lots of looks, but was too excited to be there, in "costume", and too fucking stupid to realize WHY they were looking until about an hour or two in when the embarrassment settled in.

I've been so scarred by the memory that I didn't return to cosplay until last year.

I was Spider-Man in the advanced suit at a local anime convention in January. I'd never been to a con before, but as soon as I walked in, a gang of other Spider-Men/Girls brought me into their group and we all hung out for a few hours.

My first con and first cosplay 11 years ago, I was Tayuya from Naruto (because why not make your first cosplay a minor villain?) My mom helped me make the costume with broadcloth, utility rope from Home Depot, my own hair, and wrapping extra cloth around my own flute for a prop. It's so cringy to look at, but it's also a great memory because I had a great time and it was also the only con I ever went to with my dad!

I didn't wear it to a con till 2 years later and actually had a wig. (2009)

Couple pics from my Rosie Higgins Spider-Man cosplay. I did add a webbing pattern to the mask shortly after, but you get the jist.

I don't have a picture of the very first one I did, but it was Sanji from One Piece. That was the first time I'd ever tried binding with ace bandages and my mom made me take them off like an hour after we got to the con because I started to feel physically sick.
Here's a picture from the year after though, when I cosplayed Spirit Albarn. There's almost no full body shots but that tie was a hot mess.

Dressed as Ranma Saotome at Anime Expo 2000 (the year J-List pretty much got AX banned from Disneyland Hotel). Entire HS friend group went as the cast.

Not exactly. But I'm starting to fall into that "Old dude at Anime Convention" demographic, so I'm trying to keep my cosplays age appropriate, is all.

My first cosplay involved cutting a hole into a T-shirt (one of those Hanes 3-pack ones) and hand-sewing a collar into the said hole. I used Heat-n-Bond with grosgrain ribbon for any sort of stripes on the costume. I still have the costume.

Kumoricon 2010! It was my first cosplay and first handmade cosplay. I bought a prestyled wig but it looked terrible so I had to rush order a plain wig a week before the con. I had no idea how to put it into a pony tail.

One of the first costumes I made myself about 8 years ago I think. It was all cheap broadcloth. To be young again.

Just got all this ordered and am going to throw it together in a few days.

I actually made the Protoman helmet but I've got a fuck huge ass beard and it looks really bad with 8 inches of bear hanging out from the front. Plus it made it hard to breath so I got an idea. Revision the revision. That is what the eye patch is for. It is large and blocky and have enough room for me to get it embroidered in red/white/ and yellow for "HOPE RIDES ALONE". Still trying to figure something out for the shield. Either not going to have one or get one of those hard shell forearm protectors motorcycles use and paint it red and white.

Thoughts on the general colors and clothing?

made the skirt, altered the shirt, bought the official keys, barely anyone recognized the character because i used too light of a blue. but one girl did and screamed and asked for a hug then helped me draw the guild mark on my hand and we became great friends and spent many cons together for years.

also i didn't wear my glasses and didn't have prescription contacts for the character so i had to walk right up to signs and squint at them to find my way around the con. it was a good time.

Buying cosplaysky is super risky and I'm avoiding them from now on, they fucked up the alignment of the neck and where the modesty panel snaps on. Even though I got the custom fitted one, I decided it was probably going to be easier if I just cut my losses and got it tailored. I'm positive that they would have offered to fix it, but I've seen people who go that route only to not have it fixed or messed up in other ways. If you do go through, just avoid ANOVOS unless they have it in stock (it can take them YEARS to deliver on preorders and now they don't refund).

Took it to Celebration and submitted it to the legion, might need to cut down the very top of the snap panel since now it goes ever so slightly over the shoulder, but I'm actually pretty satisfied now.

I didn't have time to make a proper sword. I have one now and I have better gloves.

AWA 2013, tried making everything from scratch with my sister and we had a nightmare. Also ordered a cheap wig offline and assumed the way it was prestyled was good enough, I also didn't have contacts at the time.

Ended up looking like a bit of a doofus but I had a lot of fun.

this photo is from 2010 but I had the cosplay way back in 2005 or 2006. My mum made it for me. I still fit in it, but it does no longer feel 'proper' quality to me. It's not BAD quality, but I had the worst choice of fabric for this costume. And wigs? In the first outings (2005/2006?) I just used my super short hair and spiked it. Here I tried something similar with a ponytail and a clip in the back. The conclusion was that Seras has unralistic hair (duh).

Part of me, looking at this picture, wants to revise it. Make a new one, better, with a wig. The other part of me wants to bury it and never ever do it again.

Back in 2011 I think, I cosplayed Mugi the first day (pic included just a random Mio I found) and Shion from GJ-bu the second day. Mugi-wig fell apart in like five minutes and I ripped the jacket after like half an hour. Didn't save any photos of Shion apparently (probably because the party city wig was terrible) but I do have this one saved of the circulation marks the jacket left on my arms. First time sewing, did everything without a pattern and on complete guess-work, and was surprised when it all fell apart.

My first one is Blitz from R6 Siege.
The shield is fiberglass with polycarbonate window, helmet was converted from a ZSh-1 replica, with headset enclosures made from fiberglass, visor made from 6mm polycarbonate, throat and arm protectors, I sewn from Cordura. The shield still needs thicker trimming and the flash array and arm pro turned out kinda small, new ones shall be sewn.
I've also made helmets for my crew, my pals go around as Jaeger and Bandit, while my GF plays IQ (her helmet is smaller, made from IBH shell, ZSh would be too wide for her). We'd have the whole GSG9 at a recent convention if one of pals didn't go bonkers and surprise us with damn Zofia crossplay. xD

OOF. I was acquaintances with local weeb group at my school. They were cool people when they weren't wearing cosplays to school. It wasn't even during Halloween. They'd just randomly show up in Homestuck clothing or Gravity Falls (thankfully minus the makeup and wigs) like in the middle of May. my first cosplay was Ruby, and my god it was shitty. the belt was made of an instrument case strap so it didn't' stay in place very well, the neckhole was too large and floppy so I had to shoddily sew it smaller and add interfacing, and I also didn't use a proper jacket zipper so I had to put the damn thing on like a shirt. I also had no idea how to style wigs or do good cosplay makeup, so for some reason I thought red lipstick was a good idea.

We just started cosplaying last year, but it took me about 2 years to design and build them all as a side project (and building the tools/tooling to make them). The majority of the construction is plastic, whether it's vacuum formed or 3D printed.
