Adding on to this- just because it is edgy in the good way, doesn't mean it's going to go over well. It's really not a bad thing to be edgy or rebellious with lolita. The reason it's ill-received by gulls and the like is that the people who pursue this actively--and I reiterate, the PEOPLE themselves--aren't very likeable, and don't bring much new to the table.

While I think that example in the OP was a bit of an overkill, I noticed that lolita becomes less and less edgy. For an alternative fashion, a lot of people sure care a lot about not being seen as embarassing, even if the criteria for it are arbitrary.

I like old school. I don't mind edgy or street snappy. I don't mind awkware off brand finds like grandma's bag accessories and bad lace socks. I don't mind the photoshopped background trend.

I don't like intentionally blurry photos posted to cof where I can't even see the clothes, cut off body parts, "creepy" poses, trash backgrounds, etc. Save that for your personal blog. If you post a gross looking photo with garbage in it, you're disrespecting your audience and wasting my time. It's not art. Anyone can make lolita look bad.

In social media now when every post people make seems like staged bullshit, we are all seeking authenticity in what we see in images. You can tell when someone really loves the clothing in lolita, they will tell a long story about how they found it or show detail pics of their favorite aspects. I don't see that in the edge-chans so their images feel empty.
