Getting back to working on my Gundam Unicorn costume after almost a year on the back burner due to work and various commissions and side projects. Feeling the pressure to get this done before a show I am guesting at in July. Lots of very talented costume makers at the show and I will feel like a total fool if I dont have something new and flashy to wear while I am standing next to them.

Not as crazy impressive as those other cosplays but I’m pretty proud of how the shawl is turning out for my Bloodborne Doll cosplay. I still have a decent amount of work but so far I’m really liking how it is turning out. Feeling the stress since ACEN is in a couple weeks. This is my first cosplay in like 5 years so not terrible for being out of practice.

I really need to invest in a mannequin or dress form but lucky my cool dad is willing to help model lol

That said, it looks good man. I like how the sintra works for you.

I'm taking on a really ambitious project, a wig completely from scratch.
Still working on the cap pattern since it really needs to fit like a glove since it's gonna be full lace (the whole cap is going to be ventilated/hand-tied) with no stretch and the lace I'm planning on using for the cap is expensive and I need to make sure I got the pattern down before I drop a bunch of money on expensive material and damage it. It's a secret for now but it's a mix of a deep love for the franchise, a desire to do my first wig from scratch (previously I've only re-fronted commercially available wigs and once I made a yarn wig by machine but I don't count that one), improve my skills, and to have a good portfolio piece since I'm a production design major with a minor in costume design. Also because this character is not "cartoony" like an anime character and has short hair so for realism's sake I feel the need to go with the more time-consuming method of wig making
>>10163327
Yes I've watched a lot of his videos, they're a little hard to follow but he's like the only person out there explaining certain techniques like how to make a silk top. I also looked at hairsay514's blog where he explained how he ventilates in certain ways to get a nice natural looking hair direction (since his hairlines always look amazing). I still feel a little lost on cap construction desu since most full lace wigs have crown stretch and that's something I really don't want because of the way it looks... I bought a cheap full lace cap with no stretch from aliexpress to take it apart to copy the pattern as a starting point but I'm not sure it's gonna lay as flat on my head as I want. My head is actually shaved and I plan on wearing the wig with my hair shaved down to the skin so that's what I did before making the tracing of my head.

Thanks!

Both are 3D printed. Found the models on Thingiverse by mrandyvalentine. I used normal PLA plastic for the blades, crossguards, and grips, then used ColorFabb Bronzefill for the pommels to help balance them a bit more. Both have a 6mm full tang steel core with 2mm carbon fiber rods supporting the blades on either side. I swung the shit out of these once the glue was fully set and everything held together well. I then used XTC-3D to smooth out most of the prints, then sanded and used glazing putty to help fill in the gaps.

For the finish, I took inspiration from a tutorial form Punished Props Academy on using graphite powder for a convincing metal effect. The steel sword had multiple coats of gloss black, while the silver sword has the same number of coats in gloss white. It's not perfect, but it's the best I could do with rattle cans and this weird weather I've been having. Hit both with a buffing of graphite powder (wear a mask), varnished with a satin clear coat, then another graphite buff to help bring back some of the shine.

Only downside with all of this is I'm worried these won't pass weapons check.

>> No.10164504

Probably the most accessible way would be to just use a piece of thick normal wire or coat hanger (with added caps of some sort to the end to prevent it from poking through, a little duct tape works). I’d approach it like a curved boning channel and just feed the wire through and enclose it in the lining.
Depending on the fabric you’re using, you might be able to just interface the U to keep it in shape. For a woven / non stretch fabric it should be fine with just a little interfacing surrounding the opening. I’d also add boning to the sides of the top if you’re using non-stretch, otherwise it runs the risk of sagging.

>> No.10164505

>>10164486
>>10164504
Ah just saw the ring in the corner, I’m blind. It should still work the same as a curved boning channel. Add a little interfacing around the channel so the fabric doesn’t scrunch up too much around it.

I was planning on shelling out for expensive, film-grade lace and using it for the whole cap (yes I know how fragile it is, I'll just have to be very careful) to minimize the appearance of darts, hairsay514 had some lace comparisons on his blog http://hairsay514.blogspot.com/2013/04/a-question-of-lace.html
(note: the links to hugo royer is broken because they're now doing business as thewigdepartment and they do sell the same laces still)
I haven't decided exactly which lace I want to use yet (leaning towards vaniss lace, pic related), I was planning on ordering samples from Amid beauty and Atelier bassi since they sell sample packs and asking thewigdepartment if they would be willing to sell me lace samples (they're in the uk so shipping is gonna be steep but there's some other stuff I want from them anyways so I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask if I could pay for some small lace swatches) since I really want to see my options in person before I spend a lot of money (vaniss lace is $100/yd)

Yeah I've seen that post, but I'm honestly scared as shit to try that out on expensive lace even if in theory it should work because it's all synthetic fibers.
I was planning on using European hair despite the cost, fragility, and difficulty of sourcing (still shopping around for a reputable place to buy it, most of these places require you message them if you wanna buy from them) since I'm white, the character is white, my natural hair texture is very fine, and I want to it to look natural, especially since this is a slicked-back hairstyle and a bad hairline would ruin it, and I feel the thicker strand size of Indian and Chinese hair will not look quite right on my hairline. If I really cannot find a good supplier of Euro hair I was planning on buying Vietnamese hair from Remy NY because they're extremely transparent about how they acquire and process their hair and it's honestly not that expensive and I'm not risking using non-remy hair for this because I don't want to end up with a big tangled mess. I need to make a goatee too and I'm probably using yak hair for that, I already made a prototype of that with these sort of "pseudo-darts" that should allow it to bend around my chin without actually sewing (since even clear thread would be far too visible on a facial hair piece)

>> No.10183181

Understandable, I get scared too when I have to heat shape stuff, but if you ever want to do I have a small tip : if you heat up to much your lace, your better of waiting that the block cool down rather than pealing it of instantly (it often happend to me when I do fake flowers). Remy NY is a blessing, but if you want to get euro hair maybe you could try those hair selling website (like buyandsellhair), but the prices seem pretty high in America. If your going to do a goatee, what type of adhesive are you going to use ?

Either Ghost Bond XL which I have and have used before on wigs (strong hold but I think I want something nicer) or drop a big chunk of money on Telesis 5 (which I have not used before but it's the real pro stuff). I was planning on hand-laying hairs around the edges of the goatee and the wig too and I really do not want those shedding.
I have thought about buying hair from an individual rather than a company through something like hairsellon simply because euro hair is so damn hard to find. Another potential option would be to use euro hair around the hairline since the strand size is smaller and the more common east Asian or Indian hair on the rest of the wig because it's stronger, but I'm worried about color-matching. Also I know superwigmaker doesn't use a hackle but I kinda want one... Even if they are expensive.

Sure. Its my first giant robot cosplay, so I'd actually appreciate a second opinion on the overall plan.

First of all, the plan is to go big. I have 4 inch foam platforms that I will be walking around on as the feet, and as you might have noticed the head piece clearly isn't big enough to fit an actual head inside of like a helmet. The plan is to have the head of the gunbuster as a kind of giant ornament on top of my actual head, with my real head acting as the 'neck' of the gunbuster, seeing out through a veil of black fabric. Obviously the central eye of the head will have lights in it.

For the rest of the costume, I will be wearing a dark grey set of summerweight (to reduce overheating) coveralls to act as the undersuit. I can then wear the individual armor pieces over the top of that. I plan to do something to add the 'lines' to the undersuit, but that might just be as simple as using a fabric pen or something, I doubt I will be able to really achieve the segmented look.

For the arms and legs I plan on using sintra, heating it so that I can bend it into a tube shape and then capping the ends with a layer of foam and sanding the edges to make for a rounded edged. The upper arms and upper legs will likely just velcro directly to the undersuit. The forearms I actually plan on joining to the gloves to effectively turn the entire forearm piece into a kind of giant gauntlet, that way my hand 'anchors' the piece and keeps it from sliding around or getting misaligned, with a layer of soft foam around the inside of the elbow end to keep it from flapping around.

>> No.10183212

>>10183208

I haven't decided yet how best to put on and anchor the lower legs, they might have to be in two pieces that velcro or magnet together around my leg.

The crotch peice I plan on doing the front and sides out of sintra, but the piece that actually goes beneath my legs out of soft foam. The purpose of THAT decision being that I dont have a hard plastic ass, and I should be able to sit down in the costume.

The chest armor I plan on being jointed to a kind of 'mantel' that I wear over my shoulders, which the shoulder pylons are also attached to. Because my head is the neck of the gunbuster, the front of the chest armor will have to come up to about chin level for me to not be giraffebuster. I plan to make the weightbearing parts of the mantel unit out of layers of EVA foam and strofoam blocks, but armor plates themselves could end up being sintra or foam. Depends how things turn out.

The shoulder pylons will have to be at least partially removeable for transport. I'm thinking some kind of 'sliding down onto PVC pipe/dowels' thing and let gravity keep them in place. If I am in a position for those to fall off, I have probably already fallen down a flight of stairs anyway.

For helping to distribute the weight of the mantel, and for quality of life, I have a backpack unit that acts as a water cooling device. I have used it successfully before with my Bondrewd costume, and for that costume I had a pair of wooden dowels on it so that I could slide a cover on top of it to make it look like his cartridge system. Those dowels are still there, so the way I see it I can wear the backpack unit and use those same dowels to help support the mantel, while also water-cooling this costume so that i can wear it in the summer and not have a meltdown.

I plan on doing the Gunbuster with the cape to hide the cooling backpack, and increase my chances of being able to sit down in this thing. without destroying something.

How important is heat setting fabric paints? I'm trying to make a backpack for a cosplay and I've painted it, but there's no real way for me to turn it inside out and iron it from the back as a ton of guides online say to do.

I was thinking of either laying a cloth on top of the outside and ironing it like that, or throwing it into a dryer bag and then letting it run in the dry cycle for about 10 minutes.

What do you guys think? There's not much info about this online that I could find.

you might want to swap the coveralls for a bodysuit. Lycra is very breathable and more skin-tight, which will make it easier to keep the armour on the right spot. If you attach it to 'loose' fabric, it may move and shift more. It also tends to look 'neater'

I suggest you make most parts out of something cheap like cardboard or cardstock before making final parts. It will help you get a feel for how things will go together as well as give you a visual impression of how the scaling will look, which imo is the most important thing to focus on with mech costumes. This can save you alot of wasted material from having to do rebuilds.

Do lots of testing and practice with your platforms. I use 8-10 inches wiht most of my suits and it takes getting used too. Last thing you want is a broken ankle due to a slip.

I second the anon that suggested a lycra zentai suit. http://www.zentai-zentai.com/ and get one with a separate head sock with a face or eye aperture. Removable gloves and booties would be good too.

Sintra inst the best for rounded shapes and it doesn't bond well to EVA unless your sandwiching it on flat surfaces. For a build like this with so many rounded parts i suggest you go full eva foam for the build - at least for the major sections.

As for how to secure parts to your body or under suit use dense upholstery foam. This wont shift and it will be less trouble than velcroing directing to the suit.

The setup you describe for the shoulder mounting is the same setup I used for my alteisen. They are on pvc plugs that drop onto mounts in the torso.

I'm just a hobby cosplayer, I do one costume a year and I think I've made two costumes total, the other ones were bought and modified, I'm slowly trying to do my own stuff. This is my first attempt at armor making, each new costume I try to challenge myself with something new. I'm building Fierce Deity Link, but a custom design because I wanted to include a few differences (like the shoulder armor, for example).

Also managed to find a good alternative to plasti-dip. And cheaper, too! If you get the chance, buy a 1litre tub of bitumen rubber. It can be mixed with water up to 2 litres, waterproof and a smooth finish. All for $20AUD, Plasti-dip cans being $22 for 330g cans.

I've had a lot of time to get things fixed up since the whole employment issue, but between commissions and family stuff, I'm only getting around to my projects.

Firstly, I just finished sourcing and replacing the parts for my partners 1906 singer Sphinx sewing machine. He does a lot of historic and egl commission work, and doesn't trust his modern machine with silk. It's been a real project, but we finally not only got the parts replaced, but got extras now!

having gone through my hoard of fabric, I've decided that I need to make it two more 1780s men's suits. Purple wool, and red wool. Hoping to have at least one of them finished up before a meat / tea party in october.

Finally, I'm working on a wedding gift for some of our friends. Going through my mounds and mounds of linen scrap, and cutting out patches to make them a rainbow quilt. I still have 12- 14 other colors to measure and cut, but I'm hoping some of my friends have more colored scrap, of which I can use to make a better gradient.

For 3D modelling hard surface use 3DS Max or Maya (My go to is Maya). You can get student versions of these indefinitely for all your cosplay needs, just don't use it for commercial purposes. Stay the fuck away from Blender, it's dogshit. It's 0% intuitive and it's only schtick is that it's free, but you can get Max or Maya student versions for free as well.

For organic modelling, I use Zbrush. It's a hefty price tag ($895) but it's 100% worth it for detailing and organic stuff. Of course, you can just pirate it if you're just a hobbyist with no commercial intention.

As for slicing, I use Netfabb for scaling my models and splitting them into pieces. it's also free for a student licence. For slicing and turning the .STLs to Gcode I use Cura. It's free. As for the pipeline for armour, it's typically Hard surface model (Maya) > Detailing (Zbrush) > Export to Netfabb to slice/scale > Export STL to Cura for slicing > Export Gcode onto USB/SD card to printer > Print

Pic related, my Goblin Slayer Armour set that I modelling, printed and painted.

I use Fusion 360 to model, you can get a free 3 year student license. Fusion 360 is sketch-based which makes it great for mechanical stuff, precise measurements and that kind of thing. Zbrush is good for organic shapes. I use Cura to slice. The workflow is make an STL in Fusion/Zbrush/whatever, slice it in Cura which gives you a gcode file, then the printer reads the gcode and prints your thing.

If you're making a shell for a Spiderman mask, why did you add on the back part? Almost all the shells I've see typically go as far as behind the ears. See pic for reference. Or are you trying to make something that's more akin to Iron Man? If that's the case you may want to consider making something that breaks into parts that you can piece together.

Also if you want something that looks like more of the correct shape you should either make a cast of your head (a lazy duct tape one would be perfectly fine. You'll just need help doing it because doing it alone is damn near impossible. I know I've tried.) or a mannequin head that's relatively close to your own dimensions. This video is an example of what I'm talking about with the duct tape method https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6eQFlmmtxKo.. Not the best example, but you get the general idea. Looking at the second picture with the tape on it leads me to believe that either the eyes are incorrectly located or you literally have a thing that's more suitable for a female anime character than something realistically human. You definitely want to make sure all that stuff is right before you start any patterns.

Add like half or 1/3rd of the thickness to the patterns edges. That depends on how many pieces you got. Experiment. Also pepakura has an upsizing feature.

Repairing Gideon from last summer for my s/o. I used shitty spraypaint and a yoga mat for the first one and the paint smeared on everything, because i didn't know that basecoating, varnish and acrylics existed. Also heat sealed the whole thing with a blowtorch so it was crusty too. Ordered some eva foam and bought 8mm solid playmats. It works like a charm.
Live and learn.

Making humans/organics is pretty complex. If you wanna get started, begin with basic hard surface props. For making humans, not only do you have to learn software like Zbrush you have to also understand underlying anatomy of a human to sculpt.

To get into 3D, start small, learn the basics/best practices and move up.

Gunbuster from earlier in the thread. It was sort of a rush job getting it ready in time for Otakon, even as a version 1, but people loved it.

I think it looks like crap and needs improvement, but I always think that about my costumes.

The feet did kind of self destruct, though. It seems that the contact cement I used was not enough to hold them together with all of the wear and tear. But until then it was a blast.

Before I wear this again I would do some reinforcement of certain pieces, I'll have to totally redesign how I do the feet, and I would fill in gaps I didn't have time for before like the upper legs and upper arms (though I'll have to trim the flaps hanging down off the shoulders for anything about the upper arms to even be visible), and I'll want to fill in the middle of the chest piece a bit to make the neck not seem as long. Probably bring in the shoulders to keep them vertical.

But aside from the feet thing, not a bad first run of the costume. Cooling vest was MVP again.

I've never posted on /cgl/ so forgive me.

I've got about a month to make a drow ranger cosplay. Ive made 1 cosplay when I was 16 (Sasuke). So I was just wondering if I could have a few pointers.
I've got access to all the good sewing shit through my mum, so I don't think I'll need more equipment.

Read the sticky so a lot of my questions are answered, but
Just mainly wondering how to make armour smooth so it doesnt turn out looking like paper mache.
What should I do about the breast area if im not stacked? Just modify the design to fit flat?
Also is a month too short too pump this out with daily dedication and no skill?

>> No.10232214

>>10232197

You are actually looking for the 'help' thread, not the WIP thread, but I can see how that would be an easy mistake to make.

I would say that, for a first time project, one month is very short to work with. I think you would have to limit yourself to only a few pieces that you think are the bare minimum for the costume (cloak and bow as your first stuff probably, and then whatever armor pieces you can manage from there. Focus on upper body and arms first, they make a stronger impression in a photo than legs generally do) and then add to it over time. Its doable, but for comparison I did >>10231775 in three months and towards the end I was scrambling for time.

Making the armor smooth depends on what materials you use. Personally I would use EVA foam rather than paper mache. Look up tutorials on foam armor, followed by foam sealing. Sealing foam to look smooth involves a heat gun/hairdryer, layers of mod podge, plastidip spray, and then finally paint. Look up tutorials.

In fact, thats a good starting point overall. Anything you want to do with this costume I can guarantee has tutorials available online that will show you the skills, materials, and practices involved. Google is your friend here.

Another tip, especially because you are trying to save time, is to find anything that you can which you can use as a base instead of making it from scratch. The arm guards, for example, you can probably find sports equipment that fits you can covers the same area, and then glue layers of foam on top to make it look like what you want. That sort of thing.

Good luck!

My Goblin Slayer sword is done painting and weathering. I'll be gluing back the grip together soon. Also ignore the fact that the sun completely fucked up the shape of my sword and shield. I managed to salvage what I could. I'm not reprinting this shit.

What kind of filament are you using if the sun did that! I'm shocked.

>> No.10237334

PLA. I think it's one of 2 problems. It was either the acetone from the Plastidip that reacted with the sun or I just left it in the sun for too long and the time melted it. Makes no sense since PLA melts at 180-200C and it was only 20-25C that day.

>> No.10237383

>>10237334
That's super weird, I've never heard of either the sun or Plastidip melting PLA. The effect on the shield is kinda cool, it looks like the metal got dented from being hit, but the sword just looks weird. Personally I only use automotive primer on my prints, since I like to sand and prime a few times to get a really smooth surface.

>> No.10237399

>>10237383
Yeah, while the the melting did admittedly give the shield character, it bent and fucked up the sword bad. While I did reshape it with the heat gun, the parts where plastic sank into the hollow areas was unfixable. A big shame and I don't have time to reprint, sand, paint and seal. I'll roll with it but lesson learned; don't leave PLA in the sun for too long.

I did all I could wiggling and squishing the corners since now that it was brought up, it was really bugging me. And with the rest of the costume being so simple, the tabard is the standout piece. The skirt hem isn't crooked, it's just sitting unevenly at the waist where I shoved it under the belt.

The best part though, I actually remembered to put pockets in the skirt.

Now I just need to attack it with an iron and work on my wig.

Do body transformations count as works in progress? I've been body building for nearly 10 months now, slowly putting on 40 lbs in the process, with the goal of cosplaying All Might at Youmacon. I love the character, and at 6'8", it seems like an obvious choice.

What do you think? Do I look big enough to pass for the number one pro hero yet? If so, I'm going to shift my focus from bulking to to getting leaner and more toned, now.

I have a golden age All Might, casual wear All Might, and young/prime might outfits planned. I'm working with a few wig makers and prop makers (compensating them well, of course) for the actual cosplay, so I can just focus on lifting, running, cooking, and eating (4000 cals/day). Making an attempt at a HECU cosplay from the original half life. My problem is that more or less the HECU marines look like regular soldiers so I’m ordering some basic patches to identify it as HECU. Another issue is the laser lens used in game are extremely rare in real life, so my compromise is gonna be to get standard clear M4 lens and green gel paper and somehow cut and glue it onto the clear lens. Anyone know what the best adhesive would be in this situation, with unobscured vision being the priority
