I have to redo most of my armor for Olivia for an upcoming con so I was wondering if anyone could give me suggestions for the problems I was having.

1. The foam would start flattening out even after I heated and shaped it in place for a while.

2. The edges that I sanded felt rough on my skin and scratched me up a bit, I wanted to know if there was a certain kind of primer or anything I can use to fix it.

3. I wanted to make them more flexible so I don’t have to worry about them getting crushed in my suitcase.

>> No.10183858

>>10183854
1- What did you seal the foam with? I've had this problem in the past, but ever since I started priming with white glue, my armour stays nice and stiff and in-shape. I dilute and do 4-7 layers.

2- That's strange. it must be from the way you sanded it? Did it come to a point? You could try re-dremeling it to make your edges a bit rounder.

3- Now that's tough, because it conflicts with your first point. If you prime with white glue like I suggested above, it's not going to be flexible (though you can get wrinkles from bending out of it pretty easily by applying heat in my experience). If you want to use a flexible primer like plastidip, you'll just have to make sure you heatshape them properly. If I'm using plastidip I like to exaggerate the shape I'm going for with heat; so like if it needs to cup my arm, I'll do it so that it's bent way more inward, and stretches out a bit when I actually apply it on my arm. That way, even if it loses shape a bit, it's still heat shaped the right amount.

>> No.10184025

>>10183858
1. I think I just used spray paint primer at the time, my Plasti-Dip had run out last minute and I didn't have time to get a new one.

2. No, it's just a flat edge, not sure if the dremel bit I used made it that way. I just used a regular sanding drum.

3. Hm, you're right. I think I might stick with white glue, using Plasti-Dip is very hit or miss for me, I'll just be cautious when I travel with the armor.

Hello again, I posted picture-related a while back. I'm ready to buy the materials and have decided to go with EVA foam as the weight shouldn't be an issue. However, if the rough size of the head is to be about 3' x 3' x 3', then is 1/2" of thickness good enough for sturdiness or will I need 1"?

Check out some mascot tutorials. Essentially you'll need four main things: 1) study interior shell (lightweight chicken wire, plastic, etc.) 2) support (dowels in the upper part of the head and cushiony foam near your head to fit it to you) 3) filler (paper maiche, foam, batting, etc) 4) outer shell (fabric, paint, etc. essentially what you see in the picture). It's ultimately your decision which combination of materials to use.

Arda wigs are the biggest I've used. You can also expand a wig cap by adding extra elastic between the wefts. If you have only used very cheap Ebay wigs in the past, they are probably much tighter. Make sure your wig net is not too tight as well. Having a good distribution of weight via combs/clips inside the wig will relieve pressure. Working on this deadgame cosplay because I hate myself.

I was going to bleach/dye remove and alter the bottom of a grey lab coat because I'm a lazy fuck but I cannot for the life of me find a 100% natural fiber lab coat in grey, most are polyester. Best I've been able to find is a 65/35 cotton/poly blend

Alternatively I could just dye a white coat grey then dye remove paste the bottom back to white.

Third option: I paint but not sure how good it would look over such a big area

Do I risk a bleaching disaster with the blend or do the work dyeing (hopes and prayers for uniform color) then dye removing? Not sure which would ultimately be less work/give the best result. I plan to cover up where the two colors meet with an applique if that helps.

I guess I could use two diff fabrics but I am not confident I could get it uniform

If you're dead set on just modding an existing labcoat, do you feel comfortable enough with sewing to maybe cut the bottom part off then sewing it back on? Then you can cover the seam with bias tape/applique/whatever.

You would keep that bottom scrap white, and since it's not attached you wouldn't have to worry about any dye removal. Dye the rest of the coat grey then sew the white back on. I think the dye removal process would be sloppy and arduous.

I'm trying to make Gyro's pants (tan/purple ones) out of an existing pair of pants. What I want to do to them is add the purple bits.

I'm having trouble positioning the pants on my sewing machine, because in order for me to be able to reach the inside of the pant leg, I end up with a ton of the pants fabric bunched up and squished in between the needle and the house of the machine(i don't know the right terminology for that part, its the big gap in the center of the machine if you are facing it head on). It is really difficult for me to have the fabric bunched up like this and also keep the part that I am sewing flat so that I don't get any puckers in my seam.

Is there any trick to sewing in the middle of a pair of pants like this? Or maybe I am approaching this all wrong? Should I be hand sewing this instead of trying to use my machine?

Any help is greatly appreciated. I am pretty inexperienced with sewing.

it also is forgiving with fabric that will fray so you dont need to worry so much about making a finished edge. the glue will usually keep it crisp and from fraying if you hand wash and dont muck with it too much.

The problem I'm running into is that I have no clue what the middle corset thing is made out of and what to replace it with. The one cosplay I've seen (that someone bought) looks like vinyl that really isn't that flattering since it's not skintight.

I know either material needs a core of a dowel or heavy wire in the middle and needs to be cut in layers if I can get the trench for the dowel made. But how would I finish foamboard? It's probably the lightest option but I'm worried it will dent without a really robust finish

Hey, to anyone here, I'm new to cosplay, but this question isn't about making one for myself.
I have a character, I'm curious how much it'd cost to commission some girl to cosplay her at a con, as a form of advertising my work.

I was planning on paying for the materials, and a flat labor cost. Is there an average for that?
Her costume is pretty simple, but the hat would be a bit of a pain, as it's a witch's hat with three bends in it, making a W when viewed from the side. But the rest essentially amounts to
>long sleeved black leotard
>big dress shirt like cuffs
>white stockings
>black Maryjanes
>white stripes along the leotard and sleeves
>four long skirt "spikes" hanging off the waist, making a pseudo dress

And that's honestly it, barring props if she was willing to make that. At which point it's just a big cross, made of two intersecting rods.
I'd rather avoid posting pictures, entirely because I'm a bit embarrassed to be asking this, but if anyone can give me a general idea on the cost of this, it'd really help me out.

Depends on your level of blonde. A platinum blonde will have less levels to traverse than a dirty beach blonde. Still, getting to eggshell white or even silver is still extremely harsh on hair and I would never recommend trying to do so from a box/out of a salon. I'm not sure how possible it is to get pure white hair. You'd have to ask a colorist about that. Bleaching in general should be left to the professionals. And as I mentioned, it would still cost a few hundred dollars and lots of time. Not to mention how short lived that color would be. Your roots would spring up in a week.

Yes you can make it yourself but it's a stretchy fabric and sewing stretchy materials is not good for newbies. In addition, you're probably going to mess up multiple times with cheaper fabrics toll you get the pattern right and do it with the expensive stuff.
If this is a 1 and done, and you're not going to keep making these suits, there's no shame in just buying one. The cost of tools, materials, and learning is usually higher unless you know what you're doing.

My first piece I made out of foam was a chestpiece. I probably spent 500 dollar on the materials, tools, and everything remaking it 4-5 times before I got it right, when 500 dollars can get you a pretty good commission instead.

Would Mashu's gloves and thigh high socks be easier to sew entirely from scratch, or buy existing black ones and add the purple details? I was thinking wetlook for pre-bought ones since they're strechy and don't really get runs.

I'm guessing it's going to be pain in the ass jigsaw-puzzle of small pieces either way, since even the pre-existing ones would be needed to take apart and sew on the purple parts. Just wondering which way would be more effective.

>> No.10193719

>>10193377
I would just make from scratch. Gloves aren't difficult to trace, and adding the purple bits wouldn't be hard since you'll have a pattern to go off of. Get some cheap similar Spandex and just mess around with the shape and pattern until it fits and looks right

>> No.10193834

>>10193377

I think both methods are equal in terms of work required, but making your own gloves could have a cleaner result. If you're removing bits of black to replace with purple details, your stitching might not flow cohesively with the premade glove's. If you add the purple bits on top, it won't look flush. Personally, I'd go with making the gloves from scratch like the other anon said because you can control how the finished product looks. I'd say buy some cheap material, make the glove, mark out the pattern, cut, trace the pieces and add seam allowance to them, then reconstruct the glove.

well, if you're trying to make that same sword the way they're making it, then i think you can still follow the tutorial like normal and just use a few dowels to connect the the top portion of the sword blade to the bottom.
use plenty of expanding glue to secure the seal completely and then gently sand away the excess and cover the seam.

either way will work, though. good luck!

wooden dowels will work well because they're light and the expanding glue will secure them very well to the foam. since you're working with half inch foam, then you can get away with a bit thicker dowels.
make them at least three inches long to ensure that plenty of wood goes into each portion of the sword blade.
lastly, i recommend using three dowels to connect the portions, one in the middle and then one at each side toward the edges. put glue in the hole you make for the dowels and on the foam that's to connect.

Kei Yuuki.
For the anon from a month ago, here's the Aliexpress costume finally come in. Have a suspicion it isn't actually custom sized for me, rather they just found the closest sized pieces. Far as I can tell however, the fit is good. Now the clear downside, is how nice the white trim isn't. The way the thread edges it looks like they clearly tried some style, but in person it makes it look rough, and actually unfinished. Should be easy to simply finish, and modify.
Plus side, despite accessories being all over the place disconnected, even parts that shouldn't be. It does come with the entire outfit. So all needed left is shoes and wig. Won't look the best. But it's a complete Kei. Pretty sure they derped with the second bow. From here it would be easy to find better quality socks, and finish any rough edges.

Try this, hopefully it fixes the issue:
>apply nyx stick directly to your eyebrows in a back and forth motion, making sure to coat both sides of the hairs
>spoolie the product in deeply
>repeat until fully covered. No need to plaster, but both sides of a single hair should have product on it to obscure the natural color. Go down to the root if need be
>clean the edges with makeup remover and concealer
>use a brow of choice (I prefer a slanted flat-edge shadow brush) to apply eye shadow to brows in color of choice as you would normally fill in your brows. Be sure apply in strokes following your brow's normal grain pattern so that your brows don't look like two rectangles.

How can you tell if a wig is low quality when buying off of somewhere like AliExpress? I'm doing a cosplay of Kuroko and I usually buy my wigs from Arda or Epic Cosplay but I found this wig on AliExpress that I think looks a lot better style and colorwise for this character than the wigs that Arda and Epic Cosplay have available. The shop has good reviews but is that enough to know if the wig will be decent quality? I know for $20 it probably won't be on the same level as Arda but as long as it's decent enough I'd be happy I'm just scared I'll get a shiny, super thin wig in the mail and have to spend $40 on a new one from Epic Cosplay in the end anyways

So guys, I'm finally going to do my first cosplay and I really want to make Doomfist's arm/gauntlet for my project. My girlfriend has experience doing cosplay construction and I went to college for engineering, so I have a good feel on building it.

I'd really appreciate some insight though on what material to use. I want to make the whole arm and I want it to be durable enough to not break instantly (i.e not cardboard or paper). I was thinking of using 3d printed plastic for the outer shell to make it lighter and to make the individual parts replaceable, and building a frame from a medical brace and other sturdier parts. Does that sound viable, or does anyone have any advice on materials to use for such a large item going on one arm?
