What makes you decide to cosplay a character, gulls?

Is it how much you love them? Is it their design? Is it how much you fit them? Is it how much you relate to them? Do things like money, weather of the con, etc play into part?

Yes

For me it's pretty much these

>How well they fit my body type/facial structure
>Their design (is it interesting enough/is it suitable for my skill level)
>How much I love them
>Bonus points if they're not the main character or are from a more obscure source.

First and foremost I try to cosplay characters that suit me. If I like them and relate to them then that's a plus, but I would never choose cosplay solely on how much I like the character.

I've also come to realize that I usually have the best time when I cosplay from lesser known series. Other fans of the source material are usually so happy to see cosplay from their obscure fav series, and the interactions are wholesome and rewarding. Also it's just generally more fun to not have dozens of the same cosplay running around.

If it's a crossplay/a boy, it's always my favorite character. If it's regular cosplay/a girl it's usually just who I think would be fun to do makeup for, or who aesthetically i like the design of most. I would never cosplay a character I am indifferent to, though, and there's also an overlap of me not wanting to cosplay my favorite characters because of things like their designs being just too unsuitable for me, or me looking hideous as them D: Did a costest last year for my favorite character in a series and felt so ugly as him I just scrapped the whole idea. RIP.

Generally, I tend to only cosplay as characters I reeeeally like. It doesn't really feel worth it to spend hours and hours working on something for a character I don't adore. The only exception is cute girls that require large petticoats. I spent way too long making a big petti, so I want to use it as much as possible, haha.

All of these questions play a part. First, I make a list of characters that I like (design, personality, or likeness to my own personality could be a factor in that), then I'll narrow the list down by budget, time, skill, comfort and weather. For the most part, I have to cut out characters who have more revealing outfits (sometimes that includes non-sexual outfits like Starfire or something) because I'm not at that comfort level. I do enjoy going a different direction than what a normally look though. It's part of the fun.
Also this:

My systematic approach is as follows:

>Step 1. Compile a list of anime, shows, movies, and games that I enjoy. This is easy as I keep a running list of what I like, since I frequently contribute to "recommend me a good ______" threads.
>Step 2. From those mediums, compile a list of noteworthy characters.
>Step 3. From those characters, compile a list of characters that are likely to be recognized by others.
>Step 4. From the remaining characters, compile a list of characters that I somewhat believably pretend to be.
>Step 5. Further narrow down the list to characters that have a similar body type to mine, or whose body types I can mimic through artsy shenanigans.
>Step 6. Eliminate all characters from the list that will be exceedingly expensive to recreate.
>Step 7. Realize that my criteria leaves me with no viable options and resort to coming up with more abstract cosplays, such as the iconic "trash can labeled 'waifu'".
>Step 8. Come to terms with my lack of creativity, and decide to go as a Deadpool x Cabbage Merchant crossover for the 5th year in a row.

Whatever I’m currently hyped about. I have the attention span of a gold fish, so I normally just pick something I recently watched/played. Got very excited that Halo MCC was headed to PC, so I knew I’d need to do ODST.

What I'm into right now + how much the world wants to fuck me up regarding money and weather. Sometimes, I have added support for comfort, which mostly means having comfortable shoes in conjunction with my cosplay shoes.

I like the character a lot, friends are doing a group, or feel that I'd look good as the character

Or a mix of the three

design plays an important part in it; but mostly I have to be actually interested in it.

I didn't start playing nier until this past week, and now that I'm actively playing it, I actually have an interest in cosplaying characters from it

Whether it's easy for my shitty skills.
I wanna cosplay Part 8 Josuke but even with how simple he is I'd still fuck it up and wouldn't even know where to start.

I only cosplay characters I personally have a big attachment to. I can't even conceptualize how people cosplay as characters just because they are popular. To me, that isn't cosplaying. That's attention whoring full stop.

>hey their design is pretty cool too
>is the outfit something I can / am willing to learn how to make

Sometimes I see a cool design first and get to know the series later but if I don't like the character or can't get into the show/game I won't do it (aka a ton of cool designs from shitty mobages)

>Is it how much you love them? Is it their design? Is it how much you fit them? Is it how much you relate to them? Do things like money, weather of the con, etc play into part?
it's usually all of these, But I have some guidelines I follow:
>no heels, period
>usually long sleeves (tattoos)
>preferably plainclothes but recognizable
>medium-short hair or tied hair
luckily, all the characters I love and have cosplayed have stayed within these guidelines. I can stay on budget, stay comfy at cons and stay within my own skill limit If I follow these, pic related

When I didn't have cosplay friends I spent years trying to cosplay more popular shows that I liked in hopes that people will talk to me and I could make friends. Now that I don't go to cons alone anymore, I'm always down to make whatever literally who I think would be fun to make.

>> No.10206876

All of the above but also guests can influence me a lot. Peach Pit turned up at a con a few years back and like hell was I going to be doing anything but a character from Shugo Chara to meet them.

>> No.10206961

Takes a few things
>Do I have the current skill level to pull it off?
>Do they have a mask?
>Do I like the overall design?
>Are my friends/gf cosplaying something from the same IP?
In the end it's nothing too crazy. Most of the time I love the character I cosplay or just like the looks at the least.
