didn't see a thread, i'm not really savvy on this board, but who is in the midwest like TX, Kansas, OK?

TnT is a big con me and my friends have been going to for a while, and this year it got moved to a suburb of the city its in, and the con is spread out accross FIVE buildings on the interstate, with "shuttles" (old school buses) to take people around

2019 Lolita Tea Purchase Form
Saturday, 3:00pm - 4:30pm in the Wood room at Stoney Creek.

Join Juliette et Justine and designer Mari Nakamura at Tokyo in Tulsa's Lolita Tea party.

This exquisite event will be limited to 50 people, and in an effort to make the event highly inclusive, the only dress code is lolita, of any brand, design, or style! No cosplay will be allowed.

Entry is $40 which includes all taxes & fees.

Except that the designer cancelled a while back and this is the photo of attendees today. Meaning it did not even 1/2 way sell out.

I attended Saturday and omg it was a mess. The only reason I stayed was to keep my friend company because there was literally nothing to do all day. There were very few panels, even fewer that interesting. Though, that's not exactly the fault of the con.
I didn't go to the artist alley, after being warned by a friend who almost fainted from heat exhaustion, but the line for the shuttle was always full and wrapped around the lobby, making it difficult to navigate the entrance.
I left after the kpop panel at 8:30, but apparently they had to evacuate because of the smoke machine at the DDFT, which they already knew was a hazard. One of the staff actually asked an attendee with severe anxiety to tell people to evacuate, when he could've easily done it himself. She said it was all fine and good afterwards, but the situation was still completely ridiculous.

Honestly, if it wasn't for the attendees being super sweet, this con would've been absolute hell on earth for me.

It's all spread out but everything is within a 10-minute drive/ride. Assuming they put cosplay registration in that venue to force traffic to the vendors. But in this game, if you don't take decent care of making sure your vendors can sell well, they will drop your con and add a different one. If conditions are rough but they still make their coin, they will return. The real question is this: are the vendors actually breaking even or better at this con or not.

>> No.10221498

>>10221481
The majority of the coverage on it was deleted a while ago. Basically they had to change venues, much like TNT did, and shit hit the bricks in the fall because there was a guy that harassed a bunch of people. One person commented on the FB about it, a ton of people replied saying the same thing happened to them, and the admin/con runner blocked everyone in the thread. They got a lot of hate for that for silencing victims and the news covered it, but it wasn't much of a read since the runner changed her story every 5 seconds.
Anyways, you're right, these cons are a lot smaller compared to others, so they don't get a lot of attention. Good thing too cuz it looks like the majority are run by assholes.

>> No.10221507

>>10221490
There were select vendors in better spots in the hobby lobby & other buildings iirc and desu vendors don't give a fuck about conditions as long as they make a decent profit. I'm certain that a decent amount won't return because it seems pretty bad in comparison to MetroCon which was this weekend (which at least had all the vendors in a convention center), but Midwest vendors probably can't be picky. Reminder that this con is supposed to be Oklahoma's biggest anime convention so maybe the con should've just paid the extra money to the Cox Center & downsized instead of downgrading to Broken Arrow & dealing with this mess.

Apparently the mayor of the suburb hated that the con marched in the pride parade and screwed them over with the original location last minute according to rumors. And you know that most artist alleys have gay fanart, so maybe the mayor decided no gay shit if you want the artist alley to be in a public school location. Thus the last minute location change? It's a conspiracy theory on why the artist alley venue was not announced until 2 weeks before the con and that the main contact for the artist ghosted any/all emails asking for a refund on their table.

Lord, that Fowler guy has a punchable, smarmy face. When you have issues with your event, you should at least try to look sincere and professional.

TnT has had brand tea parties for at least three years now, and it was sad to see that, instead of selling out in 24 hours, they didn’t even fill half the room. TnT’s failure to post con information probably discouraged out-of-town attendees—I didn’t see as many impressive cosplays or coords as in years past. At least the food was nice. JetJ gave out exclusive phone wallets to each guest. I sure hope they didn’t lose money. I bought a dress but didn’t see a lot of big bags floating around.

You can be fat actually. JetJ will take requests for adding an inch here or there, they'll accept more if the dress design can handle it (ie- a solid dress. There's probably a limit for print dresses because of the fabric print).

Just be even fatter in the bank account because you can bet they'll certainly charge you for it, and you'd probably pay extra for another tailor to make more adjustments.

As usual when you're not there to try on dresses, they won't be able to make sure it fits you since you're not there to try it on. So what I'd suggest is to go much bigger than you need, or at least make it big where it really matters, then take it to a tailor's to get it tailored smaller again where you need it.

This has been discussed and they don't add more than a couple of cm on customs (and their dresses still usually lack shirring) which leaves even their size 2 smaller than the average lolita dresses with any stretch. They used to do size 3 in their cheaper line some years back but I think that line got discontinued after they had produced only a few dresses and those did not sell out, so probably not profitable . It still was not anywhere as large as AP with 1/4 to 1/2 shirring. JetJ is a brand that afaik is still wholly produced in Japan so yes, it’s going go be more expensive.

>>10221885
This irony is probably not lost on anyone who sees photos from the tea. Mercifully, these fine specimens had left before the group photo >>10221102 although they do round out the true scope of midwestern lolita size variation. If JetJ were not aware of the size issue, it must have been quite a problem sorting through the model applications for this con! But by that time, they were committed to being the guest brand, they had been announced and had a contract so they were stuck. The models were likely chosen because they were only ones who fit because JetJ has never been known for inclusiveness in the past and I've never seen a male model for them before. I'm betting this event has ensured that Juliette et Justine will only ever visit larger cons in the major US cities from now on.

I got them to add 10cm to Dragon-chan, but I guess I haven't bought anything since. It's also not done through the website, I emailed them and asked if it was possible (they charged an extra 10k yen for it, if you're wondering).

Well, dragon-chan had a simple bodice and it's a solid with a screenprint. Might have made a lot of difference with something else with a more complicated bodice.

Aha, good to know and worth the ask then, thank you for the info. In the latest release, they are offering it a la carte as a selection on the form so maybe they also still do alterations such as yours, design allowing. I know on some it's not possible, it would require them to re-draft the pattern, or re-design a set pleating pattern which I don't think they would do. But with some, grading up or adding width to the sides on the bodice and/or adding and re-measuring the skirt gathers could work. Good point anon.

I am not sure they would sell enough at Paradiso either, or if there’s enough interest in them as a brand. I would really like to see Paradiso open a wishlist vote (among actual ticket buyers, not just randos commenting) for ’favorite worn brands, what's actually in your closet’ and then rank them. I think it would be AP, Meta and Baby/AatP honestly, then various indy with a bit of the other Japanese ones having lower votes. I think there's too much general noise of people commenting all kinds of stuff about Paradiso, people who don’t even GO to it.

But I guess Paradiso would be JetJ’s best bet for anything inland of the coasts that was not in Texas, probably. Looking at the Tulsa tea party attendees, I think Tulsa would do better with AP... and asking them also to bring lots of accessories.

If I were a lolita designer, I would have the temptation to stick to Paris, London, New York, LA, trusting that media coverage will drive online sales for people who can't attend in these larger cities. At least the fashion show photos stand a chance of not being bad. Photos like >>10221110 and >>10220967 do nothing much good for any brand. That posing, dear lord.

No. This thread is firming up my resolve to concentrate on fewer but better cons from here out, I’m done with these kinds of rinky-dink cons supposedly ‘for fans by fans’ when they are more and more ending up to just be money sinks and offering sub-par experiences when organizers don’t get their shit together. Fewer but better, that’s a better plan for me. And that ain’t happening in Oklahoma.

Pro tip, guys, if you even have a TnT 2020, focus on putting on a GOOD con rather than a BIG one, even if that means capping attendance and spending the majority of your money on guests your demographic actually gives a shit about.

Are there even any hotels or expos in Oklahoma?

>> No.10223395

Yeah, we don’t live in teepees and log cabins these days. But seriously, what appears to have happened is they had issues with their usual venue and took too long to book a replacement. They probably would have had to jump on the Tulsa expo center at least a year in advance. After that they wasted their time trying to get space through the Broken Arrow schools from what I’ve heard. Professionals with extensive booking experience have told me this school district is a mess to work with on the administrative side. So they wasted even more time. They probably should have just skipped a year or found a way to cut back on size or reschedule to make their original venue work.

There's no excuse for things being shitty in major midwestern cities at all. No they aren't the progressive coastal US cities or the venerable old capitals of Europe but in 2019, they aren't some kind of barefoot backwaters anymore either so they should stop acting like it. Midwest cons need to step up their damn game.

Apparently it was either homophobic school board member, not having high enough event insurance for the school venue, or not willing to ban porn in the vendor room that got Tokyo in Tulsa in trouble with the original artist alley location that we supposed to be in a school location. Could see why school venue doesn't want 18+ / NSFW stuff being sold on their premises and it's dumb that TnT didn't just comply with them.
