I actually had this worry because I was going to be cosplaying a superhero for the first time and so I expected kids to want pics. It’s different from people your height and age, should I kneel down on their level? Stay standing up? Some anon suggested I look at how Disneyland actors pose with kids, look into that too OP.

I wear lolita fashion around in public, so I often get asked by kids/parents for pictures. I will always stop to say hi to kids who are interested and pose for a photo. Obvious exception for kids who are visibly dirty/chocolate covered/sticky. Then I just try to give a friendly greeting and walk away.
Usually it's just the parents taking a picture with their phone, so it's no big deal. It might be weird to take your own photo with a kid and then post it, especially if the kid's face is visible.
It's really not a huge issue. Parents love having pictures of their kids posing around weird things.

Her parents were right there and said it was okay, so I'm pondering the "how to pose" conundrum and figured it might be best to bend down when she decides to hug my leg. So some family out there has a photo of a cosplayer kind of awkwardly hoverhanding their child hugging the cosplayer's leg.

Let them lean in and selfie with you or if their friend is taking the photo, do a very safe pose with them. It shouldn't be a problem if your cosplay is within the con dress codes. You can smile and politely say ’move that way a little, it will look better in the picture’ (away from you) if they don't know about the personal space issue yet.

I cosplay as Spider-Man and other comic book characters a lot, and kids always want pictures. Me personally I'll crouch down and do the "web hand" pose thing with them, or if I'm not Spider-Man i'll do some thumb-up thing or whatever.

As for kids cosplaying, I always make sure to ask their parent or adult they're with if I can get their pictures, and of course ask if they're okay with it too.

Never had any problems either way.

used to wear sweet lolita as a lifestyler in 2010, had a bunch of plastic mini crowns in my purse and would give them away to little girls who told me I was a princess. I told them every girl was a princess, handed them a crown, and we took pictures together like that. sometimes I'd bump into them wearing it later and they'd excitedly wave at me from across the room. It's not really a concern to me, no. Kids see the world so differently then adults. Those kids just see a cool vampire. 'Slut' is a word that's learned. If the parent doesn't see a problem with it, it's not my concern. As long as it's not pornographic material, I don't really care. I don't think kids should be around depictions of sex itself, no, but being around skimpy clothing isn't going to damage them.

I cosplay a lot of kid friendly characters, so when kids want to talk to me and ask for photos I always try to be as friendly as I can; I morph into a Play School host for the duration of the interaction lol. It's not hard to make a kids day.

I usually do Kamen Rider cosplays and even though nobody knows it here, kids still love the designs. Guess Toei's design department knows what they're doing.
Usually they're too afraid to ask so they send their parents and I just let them come up to me when I tell them it's okay.
Let them choose whatever distance they're comfortable with and get down on their level since they usually like the helmets the most and want that to be properly in the picture. That way, then can also get a proper look at everything else.
Never had any bad experiences with sticky kids or anything.
It's funny how I'm a million times better at dealing with kids when I'm in a costume than in normal life.

Children are masters of pattern recognition, their very survival literally hinges on the ability to rapidly pick up and learn the norms before a certain age. It's how they're so damn good at learning language and mannerisms. I see this same argument when people claim their kids are "not racist" because they "don't notice" skin colors of their friends. Unless they're color blinded, they do... The parent has done a good job rasing them to not think a chertian way, but these kids most definitely see that this woman is wearing almost nothing when most do.

Will it be psychologically harmful for the children? Almost certainly not. But these kids most definitely made some note on the perverse nature of their attire. Kids are more privy to sex than adults want to give them credit for - we forget it's literally I'm imdedded into our biology and if you've ever had kids you'd know that around 2 years old it's normal for them to engage in masturbatory exploration without any need for adult influence. We just like to assign "innocence" to them because it helps us feel better. They aren't ready for all the dangers that come with the responsibilities of sex, but they damn well are picking up knowledge about it on their own until you properly tell them youraelf. Those pieces they put together may not be the right ones, since you aren't guiding them. In fact, I'd argue the parents are zing a good job here if they've properly explained some things to their children already about sex. Studies show that teaching children about sex younger is way better for their development, which makes sense since they aren't going to be learning about it from dumb kids on the playground or sketchy sites, but from a reliable source of information they aleady trust and value. It's the reason why sex ed effectively cuts down teen pregnancy, teaching younger seems to have a larger positive effect.

Scratch that, how do you deal with parents wanting you to take pictures with their kids?

T'was during a larp, at a public event though, so there were a lot of outsiders. I was costumed as a creepy leper/beggar of sorts, with a face-covering metal mask, bandages and ragged clothing.
Then came a large family who insisted to take a photo with the youngest kid (something like 6 years old?), who seemed afraid of me. They were polite with me, and I tried to reassure him, but it's not easy sounding friendly with a full mask on, and they were laughing at him. He very obviously didn't want it, and it felt like his family was bullying him. Poor little guy.

One of my hobbies outside of Cosplay is Eurovision and this year the band from Iceland wears bdsm gear when they perform and they are very popular with icelandic children.
