Did I just become really old really fast? When the hell did anime cons/culture become this?

LVL up expo is a very odd beast of a convention, I wouldn't say it's an anime con moreso a Nerd fest that's desperately trying to be the e-sports con and cap on that market, while using the name Anime con to get people in the door.

I was there and outside the vendor hall having some anime merch, and the cosplay. There really wasn't much in the way that would make me think of it as anime focused. Sure there were voice actors but the panels were trash, Welcome to Vegas Anime cons I guess..

The after party was fine anyways, nothing great but fairly good

It's not just that. This stuff is popping up everywhere. Do people really go to these kinds of things? What the hell do "featured cosplayers" do?

>> No.10350789

I'm assuming this is just a way for the nearby alcohol vendors to make money off the thirsty boys who think they will hook up with someone at a bar because that's what people with social skills. I think the promoters are targeting any event with this strategy, not your cons specifically.

>Do people really go to these kinds of things?
Yes, some people want to see their instagram/twitch/etc favs or professional cosplayers IRL. This has been going on for quite some time, just in different forms. You're just now noticing as some places promote it a lot different, what's the harm in giving some one on a social platform a free badge+goodies for the weekend to help promote a con.

> What the hell do "featured cosplayers" do?
Most the time they just have a setup where you can opt to take photos with them, often have a camera crew and professional equipment for a shot.

It's not really my cup of tea, but if people like it and it's a successful practice for cons who gives a shit? It's often easily avoidable and does nothing overall. It's just another way for cons to fluff their programming and look like more is going on with minimul effort.

>>10350789
Most these things never happen near a bar, nice projecting though. How many cats do you own? It's literally just a way for cons to easily make themselves look bigger and better with minimal costs to people.

Because it was in the LUXOR in a 'night club(smallest one there)' with the stage/set up for it, where by law clubs have an age requirement in vegas. The free drink thing sucked too it was only for a basic well drink essentially there, nos specific sponsor for any real brand.

This was also at Vegas, it was sponsored by red bull too. So remind me when Red Bulls main market/product line is 21+. More cons do sponsors via sports/energy drinks over booze. I think I've seen only a handful of alcoholic support at cons, most being at party cons like AWA or DJ events out side of AX.

Don't think it was trying to be, lvl up expo is at most an 8-9k person event if that. Many were there for esports as well, this was just a fun little DJ event with some people who danced on stage for a time.
> I've been to one after AX. THAT was lit, they had stripper poles, and a stripping contest
Okay glad you enjoy that stuff? This was just about doing a little off site dance party after the con.
>Honestly I can't stand these weeb raves unless shit is actually hype or they have a strip show
Okay? Do you want a prize or something? Hentai Con had probably the lewdest one out there, do I get a cookie? If I am going to think about any weeb event it's when I am at Mogra, Circus, on anison events. The stuff in the USA is okay, but it's not like anything I am going to talk about being the highlight of the weekend.
>Otherwise the fact youre packed like sardines in a room of smelly dudes with stiffies is too hard to ignore.

For some sure, ACEN has a nice spread out place, same with AWA, A-kons is odd but doable, Sakura con is also spread out, etc. Could go on but really unless it's AX or CC I never really get that vibe, but I also really only go after the first sets are done. To each their own. Point is this isn't a way to promote beer to people who think they may "get some girls if they drink" that's under drinking age showing.

>>10350816
I can't tell if this is a serious post or you are trying to be edgy. Either way if you think anything but the DJ and set list are important for the stuff at Cons, whoo boy.

>>10350819
Some people probably like it, imagine if you replaced these posters with lolita/j-fashion idols and said the same thing. This board would be in an uproar with anyone talking ill on it. Keep in mind cons have a lot of people(see:normies) who do actually enjoy conventions.

I was putting it into perspective, and pointing out it's a really non big issue. As I stated before "It's literally just a way for cons to easily make themselves look bigger and better with minimal costs to people." These ads were probably done for 500 bucks from some marketing agency that approached the con or hell maybe an intern or something volunteering their skills for a badge. Dunno.

Also what singular event's going on here, I thought the topic was more in question of the type of promotions/advertisements that are going around.

In terms of replying to you, I was putting into perspective how vast the convention, dj, cosplay, and anime culture extends.

when i say the alcohol vendors i mean the night club and the lounge. they need to get people in the door so they can make their money off the vodka and red bulls, and they don't care if the crowd comes from a refrigeration technology convention or from an anime con.

>when i say the alcohol vendors i mean the night club and the lounge.
Where else were they to hold this kind of event, in vegas of all places? The con center itself didn't run past 10PM any night that I saw, for any place with a music setup often there is a bar or some make shift thing. Believe it or not, a large portion of people who go to these dances appreciate a beer.

>they need to get people in the door so they can make their money off the vodka and red bulls
Hotel cons don't, most the time at the conventions there isn't a bar outside the normal hotel one. This isn't some 12d chess believe it or not, it's just how shit works. I'm guessing that lvl looked for a sponsor for the event and went with red bull because it does a lot of sponsoring I don't know.

Some events are going to be 21+, and it's a blessing when they are, for a slew of reasons. You could easily go to the event free from the con, get your hand stamped and walk on through to the event without getting a single drop of liquor.

i don't understand what any of your points are anymore. the op was asking why these events exist, and I said because the bar wants to sell people drinks.

first you are telling me that alcohol is completely unrelated to cons and congoers are sweet and pure people who only drink non-alcoholic energy drinks. the next you're telling me they love beer. what are you even arguing about? do you have some issue with me saying these events exist because of bars wanting business, or do you just like typing a page of wank every few minutes?

>I said because the bar wants to sell people drinks.
And I am saying that they are posters with sponsors in order to make the con look bigger and better, which is what their main purpose is.

>first you are telling me that alcohol is completely unrelated to cons and congoers are sweet and pure people who only drink non-alcoholic energy drinks.
I never said this, I said they were not the main reason for a DJ event at cons, many of which are always 18+ only(see AWA/Acen/ALA/Sakura/etc). There are plenty of cons that have these DJ events and special guests come without any special bar deal in sight, they may have a hotel bar but it's not pushed exclusively to sell/push liquor by anyone.

> the next you're telling me they love beer. what are you even arguing about?
I said some people do enjoy alcohol when they attend these events because it was brought up, however if you go to purchase alcohol or choose to drink that's 100% on you. A sponsor is just that a sponsor, but the con isn't twirling a mustache thinking about all the booze they are selling. Especially not just to appease crowds of, as you put it "to make money off the thirsty boys who think they will hook up with someone at a bar because that's what people with social skills."

>do you have some issue with me saying these events exist because of bars wanting business, or do you just like typing a page of wank every few minutes?
I'm saying that the ads for these events posted are not exclusively to sell any specific drink or brand. Please point out where they are if so, the only brand I see outside the con is "red bull" non alcoholic, and Some restaurant I assume is going to host the after party that has a sound setup.

I don't know why /cgl/ has such a hardon anytime anything alcohol related is even slightly mentioned.
