I'll speak solely on the con side of things because it's clear as day how the incoming recession is going to affect cons and con attendees.

Japan is headed for a massive recession and a massive uprooting of their lives because the virus could not have come at a worse time for them. This impacts a lot of Japanese media and anime/gaming cons by extension. I can't imagine what the programming is going to look like at future cons. We complain so much of there being nothing to do in terms of panels, we're about to really see how barren they can be.

The cancellation of cons without coverage is also going to kill off a lot of cons in the future. The big cons like AX and CC will survive, but any mid-sized cons that had to abruptly cancel are probably going to be wiped out or be massively downsized for the future. I feel for these people as this will most likely bankrupt them.

Lastly there is going to be a lot of anxiety to any large gathering until a vaccine is found (which could take years).
