Last thread >>10322620
>For everything crafts and DIY related! Thread is for things like felting, resin work, jewelry making etc.
>For cosplay crafting, artist alley and handmade Lolita clothing use appropriate threads.

The last thread was really nice and crafting is a good way to spend quarantine. Is anyone learning a new skill, or getting caught up on old projects? Please share them here!

I'm learning how to make rosaries myself, I'll share a few pics of what I'm working with once I clean up my mess. I never done this before, so I'm learning as I'm going. I have a question for more experienced jewelry makers: for cutters, I just found out that there's diagonal and side cutters, so what would be better to use to get a nice clean cut on the eye pins? I've just been using the shitty cutter in my rosary pliers, but I can't get a nice flush cut that isn't sharp, and I can't always tuck the sharp part into the bead.

>> No.10384251

I've noticed now a couple times people in jfashion mention on social media that they made a piece of resin jewelry themselves, but when I go to their profile they don't have a shop link. Does that mean it's something easy to do as a hobbyist on the first few tries, or did I coincidentally find the people who are really skilled but left the business? It's not just flat shapes, there are desserts and animal faces, so it looks difficult to me.

I don’t know how difficult it is, but lots if not most dollar stores in japan have all the supplies and molds for those kind of things (sweets, animals, flowers, ring backings, necklace parts etc) so it’s not expensive to at least try it a few times until you get something you like.

I went and found the ones I was thinking of. The first one doesn't say what it's made of, and the second one says polymer clay, so please ignore the part where I call it resin. Is there somewhere onlinr I can get a beginner kit to try this out, or this level is not attainable for a newbie?

The ones on the right aren't too complicated, you could probably make them with a basic set of sculpting tools and a few cookie cutters for things like the sandwich biscuit, you can also use small silicone molds for the pie crust and the meringues. Some bits are more complicated like the twisted marshmallow(?) or the lettering on the "eat me" cookie but they require practice and a steady hand, not elaborate tools. The piece on the left would be more advanced if you were to try and sculpt it due to the more complex 3D shapes, looking at it it's probably resin though.

There are loads of talented watercolor artists that don’t sell their work. It doesn’t necessarily mean it’s easy, tho some pieces and techniques can be. As far as crafts go, though, resin is more of a matter of following directions and being patient, so not all that hard.

it tends to happen more with cheaper polymer clays like sculpey, but a lot of them tend to look really plasticy in a bad way. it's not so much the designs or even the execution, but everything lacks depth that can be more easily obtained by other kinds of clay such as resin clay or paper clay (which can be mixed together to create a fluffier look). but if you are set on polymer i think fimo tends to be a bit better than other brands. not trying to shill japanese brands but a lot of japanese brands like padico and nisshin tend to have higher quality clays for that type of crafting, and most of them are air-dry which i like more personally.

You can have a hobby and be good at it. It doesn't mean everyone is going to be instantly good at it even if they're not selling their stuff. It just means that they're not the type of person to pick up a hobby and drop it after not being god-tier on their first try. There's a really good chance a lot of those people you're talking about never left the business to begin with. They just made stuff for themselves without ever selling it. Being good doesn't mean you have to sell your stuff. You probably wouldn't want to anyway given that your average customer is a cheap asshole. I can only assume I'm misunderstanding your question. What do you mean exactly?

>>10384821
Pins are your friend. We're all stuck inside right now so you've got all the time in the world. Pin your ribbon before sewing or gluing anything down. Take a few looks at different angles, model it. Make sure it looks neat and pretty, then you can slowly start to either sew the hat on or use fabric glue (which I would strongly suggest AGAINST if you're using a straw hat but in case you do it on another type of hat one day).

Does it have to be resin? I don't really think that material lends itself to more mature looks.

I know you've already dismissed "Joann's etc" but the jewelry section at Michael's has usable materials for classic like locket pendants, and crown and flower charms. And depending on their actual size, these could be a good accent for a multi-row pearl bracelet or brooch.

I'm the rosary op and I get my supplies from taobao and local bead stores, if you're interested in metal jewelry/non resin pieces. Rosaries/rosary inspired pieces seem good for both classic and hime looks.
I have also gotten a few metal filigree pieces like >>10385160 from taobao shops (hanfu accessory shops have a huge variety), which would be cheaper than Michaels, but not as accessible right now with the current pandemic. If you're going to do taobao, I usually just google what I like and reverse image search, but I also think there's stores linked in the spreadsheet for diy/beads/etc.

If you are interested in resin, you could always do those picture frame pieces that seem pretty popular, if you search "silicone mold picture frame" in amazon you'll find a lot of different options. You can probably find the molds cheaper elsewhere (taobao/aliexpress) but amazon might be the only accessible option for you rn. Pic related for inspo that isn't the typical famous-painting-in-the-frame take.

Afaik, Baby has put out a usakumya pillow but not a big reading pillow, so I thought it would be ok usakumya-fy one for myself. I'm planning to embroider the eyes to replace the soulless ones, and adding a lace ruffle and blue ribbon. Everything seems pretty easy so far, except for the whiskers. Anyone have any suggestions to remove or cover up the whiskers? I thought they were just embroidered on the pillow but I'm scared if I go at it with a seam ripper that I'll just leave unmanageable holes. I have the same problem with the mouth but I'm gonna try to go over that with pink ribbon, I don't know how hard it is to embroider directly on stuffed/plush things so any advice is greatly appreciated.

I have a question for anyone experienced with resin, how hard can I reasonably expect the pieces to be? I got cheap 2 part resin from Amazon and once it was cured, I was still able to slightly indent the surface with my nail. I tried again making sure to mix longer and got a slightly piece, but a hard press with my nail still leaves a slight mark, even if it seems to go away after a while. Is this just the nature of resin, a technique error on my part, or should I get a different, harder resin?

>> No.10403365

>>10403314
In my experience, it all depends on the brand of resin. You can find reviews of most popular resin brands on YouTube, and most reviewers should do an indent test to show the hardness of the finished piece.

>> No.10403384

>>10403314
the indent that you experienced was likely due to the resin being too old. if it's old it won't cure properly and will indent or be sticky still. the pieces should be hard and not bendable unless you're using a type of bendable resin. and should have little to no indent if cured properly. another reason it may bend is due to too much pigment or filler being added to the resin. resin polymers need to make up 50% of the mixture to bond properly.

I haven't cosplayed this character specifically but it looks like you would do a Victorian ruffle like pic related. It involved pleating and heavily starching the fabric so that it stays up on its own. It'd probably be wise to insert some wire too since the cuffs are a high movement area. As for the meringue pleats, I think you'd have to use a technique like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0gOFBSmMFA.. My guess is that you will pleat the fabric like normal like an accordion, then pleat a separate strip of fabric using the rose/swirl thing technique, and then sew the swirled strip of pleated fabric to the top of the accordion pleats.

I'm the person who did the craft not who you are responding to. So the reason why there are so many colours is that I wanted to practice withthe materials I already had rather then buying some new nicer matrerials and fucking it up. I do understand where you are coming from with that.

Anon your crafting looks really bad. I'm sure most people who are saying you'll get better are probably also shit themselves. Self posting is fine if you're new but the idea you thought any of that was worth more than tossing in the bin is embarrassing.

>>10407463
Try looking at stuff for inspo. And don't feel too down, a lot of anons are probably putting you on the level of people who would sell this stuff on LM and the like it happens pretty often. A lot of new crafters with zero skills or aesthetics would try to sell them for way more than they're worth. Also look up a bow tutorial, it helps when starting out.

>>10407434
Thanks! This particular item is for her itabag, but I always singe my edges and use fray stop (spray fray check) since the bows don't need to function and can stand to be a bit stiff. I don't usually use a ton of hanging ribbons though.

I always love people like you, because they literally never self post. There are a million great crafters on this thread, but somehow they are always the anons commenting and never the posters

you shouldn't use soft cases because they don't hold up nearly as long. also if you're doing sweets decoden make sure not to use silicone for the icing because it breaks down over time and gathers dust and is hard to clean. you should be bonding everything with resin anyways. the cases you usually see online generally break very quickly because while they look nice the craftsmanship is lacking.

I like to sew but I am novice. I keep having issues with my machine when sewing elastic to the fabric... The thread just doesn't penetrate through the 2 layers and the cotten snaps. It happens ever 3 seconds or so. Anyone got a clue what could cause that?

Check the machines tension. It might be to much or get better quality thread

>> No.10410889

>>10410837
Are you using full cotton thread or polyester (blend)? The first one should be used when you are going to dye the fabric after sewing as it will be the same colour as the fabric. The second one is the common sewing thread as it's more durable than cotton (but dye won't stick to it).

>> No.10411003

>>10410837

Wait, I have trouble picturing this. Are you sewing:
- a channel to thread elastic through, or
- using elastic in the bobbin to shirr a dress, or
- using zigzag stitch to sew through elastic to attach it to fabric
- something else?

How is the thread behaving elsewhere? You're not having issues with breaking thread on any other part of the dress?

I buy the UV nail lamps. The higher the wattage the faster the resin will set.
I find the portable UV lights (like the torch for example) to have a low wattage. So it takes awhile for things to set up.

>> No.10411434

>>10411299
like >>10411424 said. for most UV resin you'll need the UV lamp and not a UV/LED either, it needs to be standard UV. LED lamps have different wavelengths than UV and tend to heat resin too fast and hot, which bends the resin. you can find resin that is formulated for LED, but it's more expensive, so be weary if sellers say it can work with LED.
