Yo if the guy looking to cosplay kamen rider grease is still alive a replaca helmet popped up for like 220 in change on ebay and transparent black vynl over a formed chest plate is your best bet.

I want wings that are posable, but the majority of posable wings are the mechanical ones or ones that unfold and fold. Which isn’t what I’m going for I want them to be able to bend into different stages of being unfolded/folded.

I found a doll wing tutorial that uses just wire covered in the fabric and feathers and it’s bendable. Pic related is it, and the video here ; https://youtu.be/ahJWgHJ1378

Would this be a good method for cosplay wings? I’d probably need stronger wire right, but I want to keep its bendability.

I've posted questions here before about cosplays I've thought about doing in the past but now I'm deadset on doing Red Hawk from Jetman. I just got two questions since it is still gonna be my first hand-made cosplay. How will I be able to get the white and yellow parts of the suit on the spandex itself if I'm using a basic spandex morphsuit? Or is there a better alternative to getting multiple colors on one spandex suit? My second question is are there any good sources out there for getting into making costume parts with pepakura foam or 3D Printing? Either one of those will be how I make my helmet, but I've never dabbled in either of them so I need something to start me off on those. I appreciate any help in advance!

Use the skeleton of mechanical wings as a base for yours. Metal wires work on a small scale, but once you make those wings human sized, they'll be too heavy and unstable to be supported by wires alone. If you're deadset on using wires as a base, you'll probably need to go the foam feather route, but foam feathers obviously will look fake.

To get the yellow and white parts, you'll have to cut up the red morphsuit and add those colors in as panels. You can't sew them on top of the suit because then where you've sewn won't be able to stretch anymore.

I think you should check out some "poseable cosplay wings" tutorials on youtube and find out what method would work best for your posing and budget needs. I've had mushroom bangs with my natural hair as well and had the same conclusion. I'm more of a part down the middle person, but it wouldn't be accurate since 80% of characters have bangs.

Some people just don't look good with certain styles of bangs. I've found the best you can do is either style the bangs to fit your face better while still being true to the character.

What's the best go around for recreating the silver wig? I've never done a wig with a hair line like that, should I be looking at a lace front? Or are there ways to just simply slick back a wig for that?

Lacefront would be best. If you can't find one you like or don't want to you could always take a weft from the back of the wig and sew it on the inside of the cap to mask the edge. It won't look natural but it can help.

I've been working on a Von Stroheim cosplay for a little while now, but I am officially stumped on how to do his abdominal robot parts.

I'm working on this cosplay at present. So far the coat has been easy to put together, but I'm dreading working on this guy's coat because I don't know what kind of fur they use for this. It's long fur, but it's not layered it's just textured or styled. After dying, use your fingers to single out a few strands and twirl them into styled points with gel or something sturdy like Got2B Glued

Don’t know if possible at all but I have a dress from BTSSB that has weird material for the bodice that causes it to bunch up under my chest instead of holding taut against my upper body like my other dresses. Even if I tighten the back lacing as tight as possible it still does this. I was thinking either adding corset boning into the bodice to keep it in place during wear or having a seamstress attach a lightweight corset of some kind to the inside of the bodice similar to how some wedding gowns are.

Any advice or help would be great.

Hand stitching some lightweight boning to the inside should fix your problem. If the boning doesn't already come with a casing you can sew on, you can make some pretty easily with grosgrain ribbon or twill tape.

I bought some foam dowels to use as nails for a nail bat but, they are very flimsy what's a good way to stiffen them up? Would just painting them be enough or should I slap some coats of glue or something on first?

I suggested a corset pattern because they're designed to hug the body. Most breastplate patterns still have several inches of allowance on each side and don't hug the body tightly enough to give the illusion of being part of the torso.

Look for purple frosted fur and put it in a black dye bath to cover up the white roots. Most purple furs I've found are also a bright purple, so the black dye will help tone down the color as well.

Cover them with a thermoplastic like Worbla and then paint that. You can't paint foam without priming it or adding a thermoplastic layer first because foam is porous and it'll soak the paint up.

Need some quick advice. I'm finishing up my cosplay and one of the last parts I need to do are the eyes for pic related. Now my thought is using a black mesh fabric I can see through, and painting the yellow and red portions once after the fabric is put on. My concern though is that the paint will completely remove my ability to see.

You're probably not going to find this type of neckline on a commercial pattern. It's too uncommonly used and not sought after enough for a pattern company to want to make a pattern like this. If you are willing to spend a little bit more money, you could try Inkbox.com. I have never tried them but they essentially make custom temporary tattoos. You can draw a design and they will print it as a temporary tattoo that you apply to your skin. Their max size seems to be 4x4 or 5x2 so you'll probably need to design several pieces that fit together and make up the whole design.

I wouldn't recommend using a marker. That shit will damage your skin. Body paint is a much better option and you can create a stencil if you're worried about the lines. Do a test on some scrap piece to see how it looks, but I think it would look strange to have the satin stitching on every other line if your goal is to make the stripes more noticeable. However, I'm not familiar with the character.

Cut/sew patterns are generally pretty poorly received and are known to have major fit issues. Most people I've seen who used Cut/sew patterns and had them turn out good already have some existing knowledge of either patternmaking or how to fit garments to themselves. Seconding what >>10422616 said and use muslin to make a mockup first so you can get all of the fit issues out of the way before you move onto your final fabric.

Please help gulls. I literally have zero cosplay, DIY, and sewing/clothes making knowledge but I want to cosplay a character that has thigh high boots. How the hell do I make those? Do I have to find real boots? Make them out of clothes? How can I decorate them? With which material? What sort of paint can I use to change the soles color?

Probably. Anytype of metal armor seems fitting here so check out Stormtrooper, Mandalorian, and Fallout resources too.

I wouldn't suggest carving it out. Just cut several copies of the same shape and stack them like a sandwich then sand to make sure everything is smooth. You should probably make a divot for wire or some type of handrigging while you're at it.

Your internal layer should be medium to heavy thickness foam. Check out some helmet tutorials to get the specific sizing and process right. The thin EVA should be used for detail work. So in summary: thick EVA for general helmet shape, thin eva for detailing.

I'll be honest with you, chief. It sounds like you need to do a lot more research before you start crafting. You have a decent grasp of how to use EVA foam, but in terms of how to make sturdy and wearable, it seems like you need to brush up. Watch some tutorials even if they don't have anything to do with your specific costume just to get a grasp of the techniques that pros are using. A good one to watch would be Zonbi'sWorkshop's DeadStranding prop tutorial which would be helpful for your claw situation and PunishedProps or KamuiCosplay helmet builds. All three sell super cheap books on how to use EVA which would be an additional help if you're looking for an indepth guide.

Appreciate the honesty. I've watched some tutorials in the past but I've more or less winged it with projects in the past in order to experiment and familiarize myself with solving more complex designs without much help. That said, I've never done something of this scale. I figured I'd have plenty more research to do before I really get moving here, but I also thought a quick check to see if my ideas were on the right path wouldn't hurt.
I'll definitely check the resources you recommended though. Good a place to start as any, though I'm unfamiliar with ZonbiWorkshop so that should provide me with more of a breadth of people to learn from both for this and future projects. I've learned a lot but I'm definitely still an amateur with this hobby, so I figure this will be a big jump up in what I'll have to learn, and how well the end result will turn out.

I disagree. Boot covers are not the easiest beginner project, but they really aren't that hard, just get enough fabric so you can redo them, and make sure you research how to sew with stretch fabric. You'll also definitely want a sewing machine. Although if you do go the commission route it should be a very affordable commission. I don't recommend buying boots and decorating them, they probably won't be tall enough and will barely cover your knee

Hello, I am looking for some advice on making a lining for a premade coat. I tried to sew in a large square of cloth a, but that really doesn't work. A lot of youtube videos show the lining already made or being made from scratch along with the jacket, if I could be pointed to a right direction, I would really appreciate it

If you’ve got a shit ton of money to spare, get her a Bernina 1008. Berninas are the best sewing machines and known to last forever since they have metal parts. The 1008 is their most recent mechanical model. I don’t recommend getting your mom a computerized sewing machine, even though that’s what stores will try to push you to get, because they’re finicky, difficult to maintain, and almost impossible to fix by yourself.
If you don’t have a lot of money, try looking for pre-2000’s machines at thrift stores or places that sell refurbished sewing machines. Plastic parts became more popular and widely used in the 2000’s and machines with plastic parts tend to break easily with constant use.

This is how you'll need to approach it. I'd recommend watching a "making a pattern from your old clothes" or "copying/cloning my clothes" tutorial on youtube to get an understanding of how to make a pattern from the jacket you have and then using it to create the lining. That's going to be very difficult to get new. Most sewing machines are $150+. Joanns has machine sales every once in a blue moon or you can wait for Black Friday. Otherwise, try to find one gently used on Facebook Marketplace and other secondhand online marketplaces. I have a Singer myself that I got for $50 on FB w/ some missing cords. It's been a great starter machine. I trust the brand but I'm also a beginner sewer myself and I have heard that they're not necessarily the best out there. Singer in my experience is a garbage brand, unless you can find an old one with metal parts. You really don't want to get a "cheap" sewing machine as you'll get frustrated when it inevitably breaks down and you'll need to bring it to a repair shop. Brother is a better brand if you're looking for a new machine and they cost about the same. The CS6000i model has gotten rave reviews from garment sewers.

It's possible. Once saw some art students spill their drinks on their canvas and the white acrylic painted parts had muddy brown spots on it even after they tried to rinse it out. Fabric paint is mostly acrylic-based, unless you're talking about some other version of puffy fabric paint or something else.

Any particular reason you don't want to do them backwards? Stain the fabric first then paint the acrylic on.

You can't use regular iDye since it's fiber reactive. Regular iDye will only work on natural fibers (ex cotton). It might very, very, very lightly tint the plastic, but you won't get the nice dark tint that poly would give you.

I made a high-neck button-up blouse for my Franziska cosplay, but regretted it because I wore her to a summer con and was overheating the whole time. A starter machine needs a straight stitch, zigzag stitch, and stretch stitch. Ideally an overlocking stitch since you probably won't be buying a serger (no judgement, I haven't either). Joann's and Michael's have some pretty good deals on machines a few times during the year but they start at $100 unfortunately. You will not be able to get a real machine (one that isn't a kid's toy or some cheap handheld or mini gag machine) under $100 period. I've tried looking everywhere. Your best bet is to find a gentle used newer machine on facebook marketplace, let go, estate/garage sales, or thrift stores. I got mine for $50 without the cables (total: $80) from FB. As for brands, stick with the brand names like Janome, Brother, Singer, etc. Singer isn't the best machine brand out there, but for a beginner hobbyist it's not a bad choice.

Use Got2B to spray/gel down the sideburns so that they don't flap out and give the appearance of actually growing out of your skull. You could do the same with the nape if you wanted though it might pull a tad with movement. Baby hairs can help a bit though try not to go overboard. I'd suggest doing some research on youtube for better methods.

A pulled back base wig always looks more realistic, but that doesn't mean you have to buy a prestyled base wig. You can try the stubbing technique or other methods to create the pulled back look in the base wig and then use the ponytail clip on top. Furthermore, you can add volume to the ponytail clip by creating a Styrofoam base if you need to. Check out Kinpatsu's tutorial on youtube.

Is it okay to use cotton twill tape to stabilize seams on leather? Or should I buy some polyester twill tape? I've seen a few leatherworkers say to never use cotton thread to sew leather because the tannins in the leather will break down the cotton fibers (and I assume the same thing would apply to twill tape). Craft foam would work well since it’s stiff enough to stick up like that and malleable enough to get the wavy look. You can cover it with holo/iridescent film or fabric if you want the shiny look.

Approach it like a Victorian neck ruffle. Apply stiff interfacing to both wrong sides of the fabric, gather it, and possibly starch it. Adding craft foam that can be shaped to the wibble wobble gathered shape or wire could also help. Or you skip the fabric route all together and use EVA foam and then seal and paint with a colorshift/holo/iridescent paint.

Comb through Facebook commission groups or the twitter/instagram tag until you find a commissioner whose work you like. They will have product photos available, so try to find one that has done jackets in the past or worked with fancy fabrics like the one you have. Larp, renfaire, and historical costuming commissioners might be a good source to pull from too.

Yeah I agree with the other anon, this isn’t going to be an easy costume to make from off the rack clothes unless you’re willing to drop serious coin on ega or ouji pieces from a lolita brand like Alice and the Pirates. It’s better to commission complicated/outlandish costumes like this.

I am making this lower face mask and I have a fairly good idea on how to construct most of it beside the 'soft' piece that covers the bridge of the nose. It looks rigid enough to hold its shape but at the same time I will need to use something breathable. What material can I cover in fabric that will hold this form?

One idea is to fill it with a high density foam but have that foam only long enough to peek out of the top of the rest of the mask as shown (I feel like that wont lay correctly though).
Another idea is to prepurchas a mask similar enough and then just cover that in fabric. Thoughts?

Is the thing on Jiraiya's nose supposed to be a wart or a stud? I looked on a number of places online and everyone appears to be split on it. I wouldn't be surprised if it was miscolored as a wart in the anime, but at the same time I feel like it makes sense of the guy's theme.

Honestly I'm not great with fabric choice myself, so I won't say as to not let the blind lead the blind, but I do know it makes a difference. I'd imagine you'd need something at least medium weight though.

For the dude on the right, you'll need a lacefront silver wig with a widow's peak. Arda has a wig like that, I forget the name of it. Center pirate guy needs a simple brown wig that you can cut to length and texture. And with Crocus you should either find the exact style he has (half bald, half hair) or cut the top half of a normal wig off and sew/glue it to a bald cap. Then use the headpiece to hide the seam.


The other anon has a point though. Either prepare to do some mad research, try new techniques, and give yourself lots of wiggle room with time and money or consider buying/commissioning/ or altering premade pieces for parts of your costume.

You could probably buy grey dress pants and brown slacks pretty easily as well (from normie shops). You might get lucky with a blue blazer/coat and orange shirt as well, and the yellow waist sash and jabot can just be tied-on yellow and white scarves respectively.

The hippie balding uncle will probably have to DIY a lot of his outfit no matter what, wish him luck for me.

If you really insist on making them, most fabric stores put their suiting fabric (ie- fabric suitable for making suits) in one section, ask the employee where this is, then touch everything until you find something you like the feel of. If you really need to buy online, I'd recommend cotton twill.

I'm not sure how thick you want the blue shirt to be, if you want something lighter than pants material, I'd go with kona cotton, or else a cotton-polyester blend. It's easy to sew, lighter than twill, dense enough to not look too light for the coat it's probably supposed to be.

For the waist tie and jabot, ideally you'd use poly imitation silk or chiffon but I'm going to suggest cotton broadcloth or lawn instead because both of those are hell for beginners, the fabric likes to shift around. Orange shirt to the right can use the same type of broadcloth for his shirt as well.

Hope that helps. Press your seams while sewing, it's important.

Think this is con safe? The nails are plastic but, not sharp. If not I am at a loss as to what to use for stand in nails. Not that there are any cons to go to but, gotta try to stay busy ya know?

If they're plastic and blunt, you might be able to get away with it. Of course, it'll vary con by con and at the discretion of the staff member doing weapons checks, but I've never been to a con that had issues with plastic spikes, nails, or other similar bits.

I tried making them out of clay but they didn't turn out right. I tried using a mould I made out of air dry clay but, that didn't turn out right and I have no idea how to go about making rubber nails.
