After VM's successful reopening, now MM announced their return from the dead. IW's latest reservation did really well and they resumed shipping internationally.
Seems like classic is not dead after all.

Let's discuss new releases, share your favourite coords, and ask your classic related questions ITT.

JetJ had some decent designs in their 2020 spring catalouge which never got released. It's because chinese lolitas make up 80% of their customer base and they want prints and OTT shit only. 100% agree with you anon, I’ve gotten my hands on some older pieces recently and details are just exquisite.

In the same vein, does IW generally release more polyester than cotton for their main pieces? I’ve had around 12-14 of their dresses/skirts pass through my hands over the years, and my impression of them is poly > cotton, not extreme but something like a 2:1 ratio. Someone with more experience with IW correct me if I’m wrong about this impression though.

>> No.10472695

>>10472624
Lately that’s definitely the case. I would even say far above 2:1. If you look on the website now, polyester vastly outnumbers cotton.
I have a good number of their cotton pieces from before 2018, but they also used to do a lot of poly cotton blends. My main issue is that in the past their polyester pieces were still nice. I really hate the polyester they use now.

I do. They are very expensive because they're such a small brand. They have a heavy focus on lace and tailoring so their items look really beautiful, but sometimes aren't that practical to wear because the fabric wrinkles easily and some of the cuts aren't super comfortable. They also don't always line the bodices of items. The owner/designer is a man so he might not be as concerned about comfort and wear ability. I would say Seraphim items are super beautiful but not really worth the sticker price so buy things used.

I have three dresses from Seraphim including your pic related. They're very beautiful with a focus on lace and details, and I would say the items I have are incredibly comfortable to wear as they're 100% cotton. However they sort of wrinkle easily and they're bit of a pain to wash. They also tend to have that mormon vibe about them because of their long, flowy cuts so I would really recommend a belt to cinch things in for a more archetypal lolita silhouette. They're more popular with older lolitas because of those cuts though.

Pic related is on my wish list, I'm just such a sucker for the neckline.

I'm still not entirely happy with them for how they've treated international customers, but their socks are just too good to pass up.

I'm still interested to see how the secondhand market will be post-MM revival. Prices for items have skyrocketed recently; but it seems like VM items (depending on the item, of course) are more widely available/less expensive post-VM revival. I'm still very curious to see how it all plays out. And quietly hoping whyteleafe gets a re-release.

The lace is nice, although the cut is not my favorite. It feels more and more that classic brands are leaning into longer length historically inspired wear and less "lolita"-esque (or at least, lolita as it once was). It's interesting.

I think it’s the quality of their polyester rather than it specifically being that their dresses are polyester. The quality has sadly gone downhill a lot in recent years compared to the quality of the polyester from several years ago. I’ve got plenty of dresses from them from over five years ago, and some more recent pieces, including in polyester. The quality of the fabric in the newer dresses is markedly lower than that of the older pieces, which is a shame.

NAYRT, but I want to say the last IW release I got was Merry Belle (I could have sworn they did a re-release in 2016-2017, but lolibrary is telling me no) and I sold it quickly because the polyester just didn't feel right. I know there are practical reasons for the fabric shift, but unless it makes sense from a design perspective (ex: a chiffon dress) polyester just makes lolita lose some of that magic.

Non-traditional fabrics in lolita on the other hand, I adore.

Everything I’ve had up to from about 2015-2016 has been fine, from pieces like their shantung satin jsks, like Beluga, which also has their old classic pear skin fabric, to Glen Check, to Pierrot Angel. Everything has been lovely. I then stopped buying things for a few years or so, but then recently acquired their Ornament jsk, from a few years ago, and their W blade skirt from last Winter sale. The polyester has felt really plastic-y and just not pleasant. Nothing like the quality I’d gotten to know ten years ago.

Exactly! It makes me so sad, because at least for me IW felt like the more "accessible" classic brands as a babylita just starting out. I'm glad I got into the fashion when I did, because while most of my current wardrobe is secondhand/older than when I started (when will MM return from the war) I paid attention to new releases as a babylita, and would have been so disillusioned by the quality.

IW is rereleasing its Doll Onepiece. It was originally released in 2000 and was in the first issue of GLB.

The original was made of velveteen and this looks like poly so I’m very disappointed

>> No.10482422

>>10482421
I own the original and it's closer to actual velvet, more drapey, it's incredibly soft and delicate, I love it so much.

Which gives me such mixed feelings about this, interesting to see it at a longer length, not sure it's working with the proportions. Is velveteen just no longer viable?

>> No.10482426

>>10482422
The original must be a beautiful dress to own. I keep an eye out for it but I think my chances of coming across it are slim.

I’ve wondered the same thing about velveteen. Classic brands don’t seem to want to go near it any more. Meta still releases velveteen every year from what I’ve seen, it’s usually a little more expensive than their regular releases but still reasonable. But I don’t know what the quality is like. Maybe classic brands don’t see a demand for it. Personally I would eat that shit up.

Their sewing is still pretty good, but the fabric quality and detailing have definitely dropped over the last ten years. Their polyester used to be much nicer quality. I’ve bought more recent pieces, and they’ve felt stiff and plastic-y. It’s great I agree having things that are versatile and good for more casual days, as well as being able to be dressed up a bit, while also working with a range of styles, but their standard for this is not what it used to be.

Why do these brands keep insisting on poly for the longer lengths? I get that it's cheap and the Chinese lolitas willing to pay full price don't know what quality materials look like, but the silhouette of the skirt is totally off because the fabric is too light to hold it's shape. You can see the lumps and bumps from the ruffles on the petticoat ffs and it looks so so cheap. (Yes I'm mad lol)

The longer lengths are likely a passing trend. The weird skirt shape is because the models are using caged skirts instead of petticoats. The lumps and bumps are also because of the tiers on the caged skirt. This would not be an issue if they had layered a thinner petticoat over the caged skirt.

Since IW's quality has been up for debate a lot lately, I've been looking for coords and detail shots of recent (~last 3 years) releases.

My greatest gripe with IW in recent years is about their stock photo quality tbdesu. Dump end.

I'm just amazed that IW has the nerve to release photos with the dresses draping like this. I'm pretty sure the ita threads have skewered other petticoat shapes for far less.

Also, is the Chinese market even interested in IW? I thought the majority of them are AP/BtSSB stans.

I always thought the Chinese are more hardcore AP than BTSSB, but like kumyas to an extent, just like a lot of westerners. But outside of sweet I was under the impression that classic was quite popular amongst the Chinese.

I think classic is pretty popular, but from what I've seen they tend to go for more JetJ and VM? I don't know too much about the community so I could be off base, but I pretty rarely see Chinese lolitas wearing IW.

>> No.10485029

>>10484809
Since when did Chinese lolitas become the bogeyman for lolita fashion? If you want to blame them for AP cheaping out then maybe, but classic isn't as popular over there. IW has been cutting corners since a while ago, and they're not wildly popular with Chinese lolitas either.

I think classic is more popular than gothic, but the gap between the number of people who like sweet and the number of people who like classic is way larger than the gap between classic and gothic.

From what I've seen, MM > JetJ = VM > IW. I think VM is getting more popular and might eventually be on par with MM.

Thank you. I've been seeing a bunch of lolitas on ig who are Chinese and very much into non-ott classic but cgl keeps insisting oh no every Chinese can only be into ott classic. Kikilua is one of my favorites.

Thanks for the weibo too.

Both statements you made are huge generalisations. Both communities have people that do simpler classic and people that do ott classic. The execution of the chosen style will vary from person to person, coord to coord. Wearing the more traditional classic style does not make you a better lolita; it is only "good" in your eyes because that is the style that speaks to you most.

I was wrong, fortunately. Got a mail yesterday that it would be arriving today and it did. In perfect condition, and the lace at the bottom looks a lot better in person, it's not a fishnet, it's like fish scales, which fits the Bosch print since there's some fish or fish-adjacent creatures in there. All in all I'm happy with it but this might be my last purchase straight from them unless they rerelease my DD.
