Actually put effort into your cosplays unlike most moids. Stop being squicked by makeup because "girls wear it". Trust me, you're gonna need it.

There's no singular correct answer to this because it depends entirely on what you look like. Pick a character that looks relatively similar to you. Even if you're hot, if you pick a character that doesn't suit you, the difference will be too jarring and take away from your appearance.

Make sure in you're in good shape. If you're unattractive, cosplaying will just make you look uglier. No one magically becomes less ugly by cosplaying, if anything it just makes their ugliness stand out more if they're trying to be a character known for being attractive.

If you have an ugly face, get super fit and cosplay a character who wears a mask but shows off his body like pyramid head.

I've been in the con/cosplay community for 20 years now. Dated serveral cosplayers, hooked up with a few more, had tons of friends of both genders in the community. I've only ever known ONE shirtless buff guy type who actually got laid at cons and he was a funny, very outgoing dude who actually made decent costumes. Other than that one guy I've never seen anything that would imply one of these guys actually getting laid, in fact they've always been objects of ridicule that nobody would even invite to parties or associate with in general. I'm sort of fit and I like doing fit characters (ie. characters with sleeveless outfits), but I make all my costumes and I like discussing techniques and shit with other makers at cons. It's really easy to tell if someone is just there trying to pick up chicks. Here's a checklist:
>store-bought cosplay
>no wig/wig is terribly styled
>cosplayer has no clue about their character or common interactions with others from same series
>(optional, but is common): interpretation is a HUGE stretch from character's usual look to look as manwhorish as possible (ie. shirtless goku instead of the much more common gi goku)

The bought cosplay and no wig, combined with a "fit" cosplay is an I N S T A N T red flag. Anyone worth a damn that sews can tell if the cosplay is custom. It's pretty easy to tell.

I'm not sure where this "every cosplaying female is a sex-crazed omnidirectional slut" crossed over with "/fit/ wannabes and dudebros who have no interest in anything beyond getting laid are catnip in the community". Loads of seagulls and loads of other randos in the community definitely hate thirst one another and there is a fair amount of tail to grab if you're social, charismatic, and can hold conversations about whatever it is you actually know. However there's this bizarre misconception that being a buff muscle god wearing a Taobao wig and vaguely resembling a DBZ character's cosplay means you're entering a whirlwind of pussy. It never, ever, ever works that way. In fact these types are frequently outed and shuttered from most events. Anybody who hosts or has been invited to room parties knows that these guys are almost entirely absent from all of them.

If you ARE looking for a starting point, stop cosplaying dudebro shit and start cosplaying from things women enjoy. No woman on this earth has ever been turned on by a Master Chief cosplay. Mystic Messenger, Free, KnB, there's plenty of eye candy to choose from. If you are confident your physique is good enough to play the part of the bigger, more dominant types, you can cosplay those guys instead of the more diminutive featured dudes. You should also take a modicum of time to learn your character and who they are in the series, because even if Shredd Beefcake looks like a badass at first glance, you could easily be cosplaying a character who is loathed or mocked by the entire community and be a walking meme for your whole con tour. Lastly, be social with men and women wherever you go, because we can all tell when you're only there to try and pick up chicks, and as stated before, that's the fastest way to guarantee you get invited to nothing beyond the public gathering.

idk, from my experience, people with store-bought are either extremely casual fans or are trying to "make it big" as a "cosplayer" (which are also surface level fans, usually cosplaying FOTM characters like ZeroTwo or 2B). You need to have a certain level of autism/dedication to the character/show to make cosplays, so they're usually more interesting to talk to.

Also, maybe this is just a one-off thing, but my ex, who I met at a cosplay gathering, always told me that she wasn't interested in me until she saw me again without a costume later that night. Maybe looking attractive to women in the costume isn't really the goal at all, and the costume is more about breaking the ice and establishing your credibility as a fan and not just some loser trying to hook up with cosplayers.
