I went on devilinspired for the first time in months. Why is everything there garbage? Has it always been cheap tasteless garbage and I never saw it before? Or are they getting worse? I could have sworn I used to go there and would blow up my tabs with all the stuff I wanted, but now everything seems hideous.

Basically this. Clolita is generally garbage and half the time the QA for it going out the door is also bad, so you don't get what is advertised a lot. Infanta is notorious for bad QA. I never get what is advertised, even from the very beginning when clolita got popular 10 years ago. Without LJ reviews, these companies are getting away with a lot more crap.

There's some ok ones sometimes, but I think things are usually cluttered for prints, or poorly designed. Then the ones that aren't prints are always ? as well, because there's way more open to going wrong for just a design dress.

Nevermind that fact that I just realized Mary Magdalene likely went out of business from the severe amount of replicas that were being created of their designs from China. Even though the replicas were crap, their designs were easy to replicate for China. Nothing compares to their construction though, but now I hate Clolita a little more after coming to that realization yesterday.

hard disagree, the market for MM replicas and the market for genuine MM had barely any crossover if any. people buying the reps never would have bought from MM directly. they either couldn't fit into it, couldn't afford it, or didn't know it existed because they were weebs trawling amazon for jApUhNeSe FaShUn

This is what I do. Order dresses from a couple of well-reviewed brands and if the quality is decent when they arrive, I bookmark their Taobao pages and just shop from them directly.

Taobao is propped up as an affordable option for poor-litas but with an EMS costs and SS fees, it hardly ever is worth it anyway with how ugly the dresses look most of the time.

Truthfully, I've seen far more than just newbies with MM replicas that were hard into the lolita community. It's been going on for a long long time and trust me it's not just newbies. A lot of the "prestigious" clolita brands all copied designs from MM and are still around, today.

Also I'd like to add getting lolita was not that easy 10 years ago when replicas started becoming pronounced and we lived with 'loliables' a lot more. You're living in a completely different market right now.

It's definitely a case of if you value time over money for me, taobao website is a bit difficult to navigate and you often need to be careful with the brands and do more research than buying second hand.

Do you have any recs for taobao brands you found were nice? I mostly buy second hand because i get tax to death when importing but i like to see what is out there, also sometimes you just find a dress you really love.

It's even worse when you look at news pages lile chinese lolita update. Looking at their newsfeed really is an eyesore since half of their posts aren't even presenting lolita items anymore, but cheap looking variants of school/sailor uniforms, idol costumes, punk stuff, qi/wa-styled clothing, vintage inspired stuff and bastardized crossbreeds of these. And so much fugly "idol" stuff. And if you look at the few "real" lolita releases that are left once you blend out the rest, you still struggle to find some decent releases that don't have this obvious cheap look to them or are awkward clusterfucks.

Not that TaoBao ever was a serious threat for japanese brands, but I until not too long ago, they used to have much more decent low budget releases that are atleast worth their money than the shit you see today, in my opinion. And I seriously wonder, where did they all go?

I love older AP too but I also realize that the amount of AP in the world released in 2009-2014 is a finite resource. The dresses will get older and the fact that they’re currently trendy means they’ll pass around owners quickly and get even more strain on them. You can still your head in the sand forever and refuse to acknowledge CLolita and modern AP as “true lolita” but the fashion will leave you behind

anon is one of those cringy larpers who equates lolita to high fashion/haute couture, even though it's not, and then acts like mainstream fashion rules and trends are applicable in lolita. she's probably the same type of idiot who is obsessed with lolita having normie appeal. honestly i hate anyone who think high fashion and lolita go together at all. plus, clolitas are the ones who do that because they equate price with quality.
high fashion as it is now, is just a form of direct marketing for the mainstream. celebrities wear/endorse products, and then it trickles down the wealth line in the form of fast fashion. it also influences the rigidity of normie fashion since the designers at the top control what fast fashion does almost directly. even if high fashion designers are inspired by alt fashion lolita follows some other alt fashion trends at best. plus, luxury bags and shoes look like shit with lolita unless they are those quirky novelty bags from like gucci that sometimes look cute. high end brand accessories like that are meant to be as neutral as possible, while still representing the brand. even the most feminine designs are "mature career woman" feminine and not girly feminine (even classic and goth are arguably girlier than anything for western adult women) and just make anyone look like upper middle class tryhards.

I've definitely gotten more picky over the years with lolita, a lot of BOTH chinese and brand dresses won't cut it to me. Almost anything polyester is a no-go unless I'm head over heels for it. The rules of shopping on taobao are much more strict than "if you're on the brand site anything goes" so a lot of garbage comes up. Miss Point still makes cute things more than not, Boguta released a cotton skirt and blouse combo that is quite nice. Sibyl Heisei has some very cute dresses as well. These are shops that make solids in cotton. They won't stand out terribly, and they're not on trend. Taobao can be good for these types of clothing, and certainly good for accessories. And finally, FaeriesDaffodil's Cotton pieces are very nice. They release some garbo polychiffon stuff too, but then you have beauties like these.

I won't deny most stuff that is popular on taobao is cheap looking pieces, But I will deny it is all garbage. Imo it is simply that the market as a whole is trending towards overdecorating cheap poly and marking it up. I agree with the other anon that a lot of new dresses don't interest me aside from BTSSB's old school revival items and the rare VM or IW pieces. I do think lolita fashion is changing, but there is still enough of a niche within the niche to look for things of highER quality, even if not the best.

>> No.10660373

>>10660208

Japanese brands tend to use plastic too tho. Decorative corsets don't really need steel boning and there are tons of western and japanese created corset concepts that use plastic instead of steel boning anyhow. Personally I feel like if you're going to be using a true heavy duty corset it looks too much like underwear/shape wear and serves a better purpose as undergarments than the more modern interpretation of corsetry as decor.

plastic is awful though because it warps easily if you so much as sit down, and is difficult to restraighten if it warps. im not asking for high end steel boning or anything but something that keeps its shape over time better than plastic is strongly preferred

>> No.10660555

>>10660407
I agree, however if you want a good corset that isn't cheap plastic your only options are synthetic baleen and steel, both of which are going to require a more delicate construction than plastic boning. If you are wanting something to keep its shape as long as possible you would probably want steel, and there are not a lot of corsetmakers making off-the-rack lolita friendly length corsets other than abilletage and MAYBE timelesstrends's waspie line, however it is incredibly simple looking and if you want something more fancy you would have to add your own embellishments. I have looked into this in length as I wanted some beautiful corsets as well. I really like the victorian corsets that are lacy and beautiful and wish a brand would incorporate that kind of style into a waspie length.

Sorry for totally going off on a tangent, I just don't think this is feasible for most chinese brands, let alone japanese brands as corsetry is pretty niche, and combining it with lolita is even more niche.

Larper. Live action role play. To role play something you're not.
Lolita. Someone that wears lolita fashion.

Someone saying they like or dislike a dress does not indicate that they wear the fashion or not. It makes no sense to call someone a larper based on their opinions of someone else's or their own dresses. Having bad taste does not indicate that they do or do not wear the fashion. Itas are still lolitas. Taobao wearing lolitas, are still lolitas. You're using a buzzword without realizing what it even means.

Itas are specifically people wearing lolita incorrectly, but they are still wearing the fashion. Calling someone a larper just because you disagree with them on a lolita dress is retarded. But on a positive side, while lolita as a whole has similar issues to fast fashion in general with low paid sweatshop workers, cheaper material, and such, the consumers don't throw out these dresses as much as normal fashion which is the other half of the problem with it. Lolitas trade among themselves, repurpose, and alter their clothes for as long as possible instead of throwing them away after a month like normal people have been doing.

This. The culture behind the clothes, reselling, handmaking, altering, repurposing as a last ditch when a dress is beyond repair (which is rare desu), those all are positive aspects of the fashion.

Cheaper/lower quality taobao and some of modern AP has been trending towards fast fashion to a degree though. When the dresses are prints no one wants or the items don't sell out and the brand suffers or don't last long enough to survive multiple owners the way some shoddily made items do, it hurts the positive aspects of lolita that did manage to separate itself from the fast fashion cycle. I personally think weekly releases is part of that. Meta for example does mostly if not all preorders these days and I'd prefer that model to AP's pushing out something new every week even if it's not good or popular (many times even in the Japanese market) enough to be worth it.

It's not like they're transparent with how their clothes are manufactured other than a little sticker that says "made in ___". When my lolita fashion tears or gets worn out, I fix it even if it's taobao. In that respect, I think slow fashion is just as much a mentality as it is about sustainable materials and good construction. Something with enough fabric can always be tailored or resewn, and even if you want to replace it ie get the same version made but in better materials, you can repurpose the old one for something else, even if it just becomes cabbage.

With brand you might just be able to resell it to somebody who wants it more, yes, but if I truly love something I don't really let it out of my hands personally. If I'm that displeased with it, I'll see if I can fix it to a likable state first, before weighing my other options. I feel like a lot of lolitas just skip straight to the resell point nowadays, and that the culture has vastly shifted over the years. I especially agree with the point that AP is trending towards faster fashion, and wish they would be more like meta. I actually really like some taobao brand's way of doing things more than current japanese brands, in that they put up a design first and if enough people "like" it, then they will make it.

Agreed. I would love to see more of a resurgence of what made me fall in love with the fashion in the first place: pure and simple beauty with top notch construction. For now VM and some taobao is the only thing that keeps me going in terms of new releases. I've given up on Innocent world desu.

Me too, I'd rather buy from a local brand who's charging me a fair price for a well-made item rather than spend that money on a closet full of flimsy taobao stuff.

It's not gonna last a daily lolita more than 1.5 years anyways, even if she takes good care of her clothes. Truth is, most clolita simply isn't meant to be worn every day, it's costumes and ott "special occasion" attire. Of course there's a few exceptions that are very much wearable and okay quality, but that's just my overall observation from being in a comm full of taobaolitas.

Fast fashion is a term used to describe a highly profitable and exploitative business model based on replicating catwalk trends and high-fashion designs, mass-producing them at low cost. The term fast fashion is also used to generically describe the products of the fast fashion business model.[1] The fast fashion business model was made possible during the late 20th century as manufacturing of cloth became cheaper and easier, through new materials like polyester and nylon, efficient supply chains and quick response manufacturing methods, and inexpensive labour in sweatshop production and low-labour protection bulk clothing manufacturing industries in South, South East, and East Asia.

This decrease in quality, increase in purchasing, and speed of replacement creates a large amount of clothing waste—much clothing produced under the fast fashion model is lower quality thus harder to reuse or recycle. Moreover, the rapid and cheap production processes of fast fashion create increased pollution and other environmental and social impacts—i.e. pesticide use in industrial cotton growth, fossil fuel extraction for synthetic materials or slave labour in sweatshops. In response to these impacts, environmentally or socially responsible consumers and designers have begun demanding zero-waste fashion or sustainable fashion. This increasing trend is creating pressure on fast fashion companies globally to change manufacturing and sales practices.

AP isn't c lolita. They're a Japanese brand catering to a Japanese audience and somewhat the western or Chinese audiences too. The quality is typically higher than the vast majority of taobao. Even well made taobao is still often "fast fashion" not because of quality but the entire production cycle focusing on trends and pumping things out quickly. AP is more fast than slow fashion to me too despite the community having our own practices and habits but it's still a Japanese brand. Clolita is Chinese brands and it's not all bad and not all taobao is bad but so much of it is and so little of it even the cotton is good quality. If you shit on modern AP you need to understand most of taobao is overwhelmingly worse sadly, even though many designs are cute.

I'm not even an apfag, I prefer Meta and BTSSB but there are issues across the fashion that are a consequence of globalization and brands and lolita growing in popularity regardless of if the brand is Japanese or not.

Anon, this is just the outdated definition. Based on this, fashion ONLY isn't fast fashion if it's not mainstream or mainsteam oriented regardless of how it was manufactured. So egirl shit from china technically isn't fast fashion because it's not mainstream oriented. God I hate discussing anything with some of you.

nta but they switched production to china you know. anyway fast fashion as a term is just another thing that tries to pin accountability on the consumer (and well anyone alive now) for climate change. the idea that you as a consumer needs to care about what you are consuming just takes pressure off of companies and placates idiots who have such a limited scope of understanding of how manufacturing or anything works. even itt people are spouting off nonsense they barely understand because they think it's the right thing to do. if anything is worse for the consumer on a whole because they pressure companies to make bad decisions based on limited information that is being lobbied to them. you're being used by both being passive aggressively scolded for not being informed enough, and praised when you are informed enough to now buy their product instead.

tldr. fast fashion is just a buzzword companies use to trick consumers and horrible manufacturing lines from all ends have existed since factories came into being.

Most lolita outfits are just horribly bad costumes. It's tacky and bad taste red flag.

If it doesn't look like something a normal person from the 19th century would wear, or if it is themed, then it's not clothes. It's a costume.

You already have plenty of costume lolita threads in cgl. Two of Alice in Wonderland and a Halloween themed thread. That is costumey.
