I'm not a huge fan of most fairy kei coordinates personally. I love pastels a lot, I enjoy the silhouette, and I enjoy seeing people partake in it if it makes them happy, but I find a lot of the outfits I see to kind of bore me. Something about just how "neat" everything is, if that makes sense, maybe the lack of layering I see in a lot of pictures..
That's why I really like spank kei. Most coordinates I see vary greatly and a lot of the pieces I see used carry a lot of personality.

I agree, something like this. I've always thought the term yumekawaii to be more like a catch-all term for these pastel fashions (like fairy, spank, etc) that overlap one another occasionally.
Anon, I'd recommend you look at the Fairy Kei Tips tumblr for more clarification. It's a good resource and I believe the author has even made a few posts on the "shape"/silhouette/"feel" of fairy kei specifically.

i really feel like we should take a lot of these style definitions with a grain of salt. a lot of super niche styles like this are just designers trying to make their brand stand out in the crowd so they end up taking only slight differences abd really concentrating on them. spank! and fairy kei other similar fashions in japan all appeared around the same time, and utilize the same kind of 80s western cutesy aesthetic so it's reasonable to categorize everything together. also isn't pop kei a western term?

this is what i thought, but anon was citing a fashion article talking about spank! as a different style. i think the real thing is like gyaru, many fashion terms are created by magazines to advertise and aren't used so strictly by people into the fashion.
i also wanted to explain something. kei is being used as slang, not the literal definition and it does mean style. kei was used as an insult for people into alt fashion and it was reused to essentially mean style or vibe. the real definition of kei is system(as in solar system) so slang as style or vibe comes from the definition of a system encompasses everything that is distinct in some way. like -core on tumblr. or like scene and emo.
also unlike >>10670907 is saying, all of the terms themselves are perfectly fine, the issue is rhey don't understand what the word style means. the jfashion community uses the word style wrong. style in fashion means "personal style" or styling. it doesn't refer to a specific fashion or subculture. even in japanese kei doesn't mean fashion subculture. think how lolita FASHION has sweet STYLE. the style of sweet isn't a different fashion all together, it's just an easy way to define elements of the outfit. it's people who act like style means an entire fashion by itself that are incorrect.

Also on this note, I'm going to educate you a little bit on google archiving.

Once upon a time, websites went down and when they went down, so did all that information with it. There's literally tons and tons of records out there predating archival systems on the internet. So yes, searching around is going to prove pretty worthless. I don't know what was done about Japanese websites either, because website archiving was a process that started more into the late 2000's. There's a lot of missing blogs from a lot of popular lolitas from back then in Japan, as well. There's only a few that are intact. Realistically, there's a ton of things that were lost prior to everything being interconnected and/or on cloud solutions like they are today.

Realistically, newfags, you cannot rewrite history by coming in and searching terms from pre-2010's time. Sorry. But you just can't.

This leans into why each brand created their own -kei. I really don't care about what you autists are arguing about but if you people need to understand "Cult Party Kei"

https://j-fashion.fandom.com/wiki/Cult_Party_Kei

>In 2006, the vintage fashion store CULT PARTY opened in the Koenji neighborhood, which was known for its underground culture and second-hand stores.[5] In 2010, the store moved to Shibuya and was rebranded as the Virgin Mary.[6] Although the name of the store changed, the staff continued to refer to the Virgin Mary's aesthetic as "Cult Party Kei".[7]

Look, as I said, if you weren't there or around during when these fashions were alive then you can't really speculate about it's existence. It's gone. Over. Just like Gyaru is. Japan doesn't wear it.

Kei is slang used by young folk. It means 'system' so it didn't just refer to an item or outfit having a certain 'look'. It's actually the style that creates a fashion.

The right yumekawaii (pastel) items put together systematically create a floaty, fairy-like look (fairy-kei!) However, yumekawaii fashion items alone are not part of a system by themselves, and could equally fit in with the newer 'uchuu-kei'. (Pastel items worn together systematically for a space-themed look if the motifs are right!)

There's also the breaking point fashion becomes a subculture in which it is no longer any type of 'kei' like lolita.

Pastel-styled items put together systematically create 'fairy-kei'. The English equivalent would be kids going up to someone & saying, "Hey, what you're wearing reminds me of a fairy."

It's just convenient the Japanese language can fit that entire sentence's meaning into two words.

Another example how pastel fashion design, put together differently can create a space-like futuristic look hence the use of 'uchuu-kei' beginning to appear. The dread falls and material of pants make it way different in feel then fairy-kei even though many of the items would technically match the other.

Well, SPANK is on topic, so another example using completely different 'fashion design' with stiff holographic fabrics and bold colors with a much less casual vibe in a systematic way to create 'uchuu-kei'.

It's more an aesthetic then a 'style'. There's not enough to constitute a style. That's why it's fashion design creating a style instead of the other way around.
