Just ordered this and I am so excited! Can we have an indie appreciation thread? Your favorites that you want and your favorites that you own! Accessories too!

This is my first order with her. I've always loved her more vintage inspired style, and I've been a fan of the unicorn tapestries since I was a kid. Do you own anything by her? All her work looks great in photos, and she's been really great with communication so far!

I don't, sorry! I do know she's been selling on the comm sales for quite a long time, though (started out with smaller commission, moved up to print lines). I don't think there have been any major problems with her.

I would really love if indie brands would do embroidery. Not full on prints, but embroidered appliques. That would be so lovely.

If only I could sew. I can embroider really well, but I can't make a skirt.

>> No.6304392

>>6304373
I commissioned her for the Peasblossom JSK in a custom blue colourway; I provided the fabric. Her construction isn't bad, but there are some things that I feel should be mentioned.

For one, the dress I ordered had no zip. I didn't realise this until I got it (it was probably in the description and I missed it), but the dress just pulls on over my head. The shirring in back is very forgiving, so not really a big deal, I suppose.

The only other thing I should mention is that the skirt was whip-stitched to the bodice in front, but top-stitched in back. I'm not sure if this was due to how many layers were used for the skirt or what, but it seemed a bit sloppy compared to the rest of the dress' construction.

Otherwise, she was really nice to work with. She double-checked measurements when I sent her something that was a bit wonky and also made me some hair accessories to coordinate with the dress.

I am nuts about Lady Sloth at the moment. Their fabrics always look much nicer than most other indie brands' fabrics, too. I don't own any of their stuff, sadly, but there's so many things I want to buy from them...

>> No.6304572

I actually don't like Lady Sloth BECAUSE of the fabric choice... That jsk you linked is made out of a knit... do not want. Seems like such a strange pick.

>>6304536
I ordered a dress from her and the fit was awful. The torso was way too short and my boobs were hanging out. I gave her very precise measurements...

It's a shame because she's so cheap and I want to use her more. I guess I will only get skirts.

In other news I bought a skirt from here and was really impressed. The price was cheap and the fabric was excellent:

http://www.indrolita-shop.com/

She's also on FB

>> No.6304640

>>6304624
Dunno about the skirts from that site, but this looks like another example of a designer who has no idea how to do blouses... what's with those weird collars? An indie designer needs to come out that does only tops (obviously would need an actual tailoring background for the fit/construction I'm wanting)... blouses with different collars and sleeves, cardis, boleros, jackets... that's it. Bank would be made.

>> No.6304863

>>6304640
Except that people would bitch about the prices because they don't understand how much more construction goes into a simple blouse than a simple skirt, and say stupid shit about said designer being overpriced and whine "but I could *buy burando* for those prices"

>> No.6304900

>>6304863
It's all about marketing and building your name up before charging brand prices... That reminds me of the girl from WAMH who wanted to charge MORE than brand and when she got called out threw a bitch fit about it.

It can be done.

>> No.6304916

>>6304863
I agree that a lot of customers will fight against paying more than 20 dollars for an off brand blouse.

But a lot of designers have no sense when it comes to a business models and supply/demand. Charging brand prices from the get go and then getting mad about nothing selling is such a fail move on their part.

Yeah, you're probably going to lose money for the first 2 years... that's why you have an investor backing your company. If you're serious about it, you'll follow a proper business model and succeed.

Pretty much this. I make a lot more profit (% wise) on accessories, skirts, and JSKs. Once you start getting into the more complex OPs & Blouses, customers don't want to pay for the time that goes into it. And yes, this happens even if you have a reputation as a good seamstress.

Despite this, I am experimenting with some simple-but-elegant blouse designs in more "luxurious" materials, but I'll be doing a number of prototypes first, careful marketing, and some limited runs for previous customers, before I open them up to the public.

If you want something exactly the same then (forgive the pun) I'm afraid that ship has sailed. The fabric isn't available anymore, and she apparently hasn't been able to find anything else suitable.
I saw on her FB that she finally made her own sailboat fabric design in a few monochromatic colorways, but I haven't seen any prototypes of new skirts/dresses with it. Should be pretty similar, but no telling until we see it.

Honestly, the issue we indie designers have is that we can't order fabulous custom fabrics without going wholesale.

I would be all over designing a unicorn jacquard fabric (aka tapestry), but there's no way I could afford to produce it and no supplier wants to take orders of less than 100 yards.

Also, I hate Spoonflower.

>> No.6309874

>>6309855
Agreed. The idea was really just a pipe dream, and would probably have to be something recycled and a 1 time JSK for a commission so that you would already have someone willing to pay for the labor/fabrics. Would probably price something like that around 400 USD min depending on the size. Spoonflower is really bad I hear, especially with blacks. Do you have some work to post?

>> No.6309952

>>6309874
No work available yet, unfortunately. I've been in school so I didn't have the time to spare to really work on anything lolita. I'm on break now and I'm trying to plow through projects. I want to say I'm good at the craft... but it sounds rather lame without the photos to prove it.

I just dislike Spoonflower's quality, not even going to touch their color issues. I ordered the sample booklet they had and I was really let down but how flimsy and flat everything was. I love textiles with texture.

Like it doesn't even have a bodice, look at the wrinkling along the front where the excess fabric is just bunching, and the skirt doesn't even have any fullness... at least the jewelry is cute, but not 18 bucks cute.

>> No.6312266

>>6309796
Not gonna lie, my gut-reaction was "oh no, WAMH are at it again..."

I like the fabric, but it's £5/m cute, not, uh, almost $100/m cute. I usually use about three metres for a JSK, anyway. And I don't know if it's the cute, the photograph, or both, but it looks like that plastic-y fabric that they make tents out of. It kinda looks like a Hallowe'en costume to me; it's like they haven't made any effort with the construction, which considering how subtle (comparitvely) the print is, leaves me wondering what I would actually be paying for. Pretty sure spoonflower cotton starts at $16/yd.
