It works better when you keep it at more of an a-line poof and avoid heavy kimono sleeves, really. But it's definitely not an easy look to try to pull off.

Typically, you have to pick with elements of kimono you want: the print or the shape. The busier the kimono print, the less of the other elements are better, like with the Meta dresses. Toned down traditional yukata prints look better with minimal lace and the top shapes of a kimono.

This ita thread always reminds me of how I somewhat 5 years ago bought a lolita dress and coat, inspired by my friend who was into lolita that time. Never wore the dress outside of my room, though. I think I still have them (although I've left them in my parents' house) and I'm very afraid of how ita they look. Most lolitas are so obsessed with colour coordination, it's fucked. You wouldn't tell a girl with brown hair she's got no brown in her outfit, so she can't. Same goes with unnatural coloured hair or wigs of any colour. If it suits the wearer, and the pop of colour looks good, or tones in, there's no reason to get your knickers in a twist and cry a river. You certainly wouldn't say it outside of lolita.

If the petticoat was puffier, the shoes had a bit more of a heel (or maybe it's just her terrible posture that makes the shoes look weird), and she got rid of the striped arm warmers for some lavender wrist cuffs with black bracelets. Or even kept the arm warmers but bunched them down and added some jewelry.
Most importantly, though, her hair and makeup... I can see this outfit working on someone more done up and with better posture/posing.
