Who's going, /cgl/?

>> No.6488560

Going. Bringing Tifa Lockhart, Saya Takagi, Sailor Saturn, and maybe Asuka Langley's plugsuit if it gets finished in time.
So what's the convention center like? I went to Sac Winter last year, so it was at the hotel.

>> No.6488561

>>6488560

Huge. I'm excited, but so anxious for how large it's going to be :/

>> No.6488577

>>6488561
But the thing is, getting such a large venue for the con this time is probably going to turn out to be a bad idea. Not that I'm not happy about it, because the hotel was way too cramped a space, but Sac-Anime falls smack dab on the same weekend as ALA.

I know in the past it's happened, but last year it was the weekend after ALA, so people had returned back to NorCal by then.

They shoot themselves in the foot every time they do this.

The more 'serious' cosplayers are going to be at ALA for the most part, especially if they have other friends going (because really, how are you going to convince people to come to the hellhole that is Sacramento?).

Sac-Anime will end up having more of the (bad) bronies and creepy ravers than ever.

> (because really, how are you going to convince people to come to the hellhole that is Sacramento?).

Sac Anime is hoping they can bank on their guests to bring people to the con. You have to admit they have a pretty stacked list compared to ALA

>> No.6488741

Debating still.
Have tickets and days off, friends offered to shelter me.
It's likely I'll go.

Bringing Kotetsu and Rigby again, not sure of third.

>> No.6488772

I'll be there helping out with the Homestuck meet ups and hopefully keeping people in control like last time.
I'll be Latula on Friday and then Damara and God tier Aradia on Sat and Sunday (depending on weather)

I've got a friend doing Jack Frost every day of the con as well

Yes and no.

I've seen worse crowds, but the majority of them that go to meetups (if you can even call them that, they just end up being 10 people sitting around with nothing to eat or drink) are all around 14-16.

That doesn't make them inherently bad, but being 21 makes me feel kind of awkward. Like, I don't feel comfortable asking 14-16 year olds to hang out with me. That and I can't chauffeur them everywhere.

I went to SacnAnime last year, but since I like ALA more I won't be there this time.

Poster mentioned they'd gone to Sac Anime last ear and gave a reason why they weren't going this year, so that part of the post was relevant to this thread. So butthurt about a single person saying there's going to ALA instead of.

>>6490543
The divide is really stupid. I prefer ALA because of its larger, older attendance. Sac Anime is good for guests of honor, but I've gotten to a point where I go to cons to socialize with my friends, a lot of whom are in Southern California.

If you like VA and are younger, Sac Anime is great. If you're looking for a place to socialize with 18+ people while in cosplay, I'd say go to ALA.

I don't know any trip fags and generally don't like them, so I would actually prefer they not be at ALA to jerk each other off. Easy enough to avoid them, though. Harder to avoid the sweaty raver bronies at Sac Anime.

Wasn't sac getting a bronycon too? I was wishing some of the pony people would be more interested in that.

Also remember that all the meet ups are in a separate area now, so really there will be less pony and homestucks during those (in the main con area I mean)

I hope the masquerade is good this time. I really wish they'd get someone else to run it. I asked a question to the head bitch before, just asking what the dimensions of the stage were so I would know with a big prop we were planning on. She actually said she had no idea "it's standard stage size" our prop and skit never got off the idea floor, but still you would think she'd at least know size

It might be this year if you're into guests. They've got Kevin Conroy, Grey DeLisle and Mai Aizawa, who might be worth going to the con for if you're a fan. There's also a new venue in a better location, so if anything, you'll have other stuff to do in the area if you get bored with the con itself. Downtown Sac has some nice bars and restaurants, which you can access by car or the lightrail.

This year, it looks like SacAnime and ALA are pretty much opposites: SacAnime's got better convention offerings but of course the same shit crowds, while ALA has less convention stuff to do, and a better party scene. Whichever one you end up going to, you'll probably have fun if you know what you're doing.

I liked the new venue a lot, I got some good footage despite not being able to find someone to cover for me at work until the night before so I didn't have much time to plan for anything. Wish the sun was up more but what can you do.

The Issues I did have was that they didn't have everything at the convention center. Half of the event was at the Sheraton and the gamer room was so cramp and they way you had to go there made it look sketchy since you had to take the emergency stairwell for. I wish they opened the second story, I took a peek around back and there was a lot of natural light which would have helped when it started raining. Also some of the artist alley vendors didn't like how they combined artist alley and venders hall as it took away sales. Also i wish there was more people but I can see how the weather and being on the same weekend as Anime LA affected things. And the surrounding restaurants need to stay open longer.

My experience with the staff was great, they were very helpful and I had no problems at all with any of them. Sure they would tell my group to move out of the door way or something but that was to ensure traffic moved freely.

Overall had a great time, got to hang out with great people, meet new people ( even the religious guy with the sign was pretty cool, WAY better than the fanime ones), and got some good footage. There are a lot of places for awesome cosplay photos and video so now I can properly plan for the next one. Can't wait until the next one.

Also the guy with the Gundam suit, that was awesome and you did great work.

I'm not going to blow smoke up a bad cosplayer's ass. The people who won for craftsmanship deserved their awards because they were fucking great; the person next to me asked how a person could make wings that lighted up, I told them to look up tutorials for help- naruto kids would look back in disgust that I was quietly talking over judges waiting for someone to come to the stage.

I'm more mad that her skit took best in show when she was sloppily doing Thriller and was taken off beat by people clapping in the crowd. Sure the other skits were not great either, but they were better than that. The Tales skit was dramatically better than hers and they didn't place at all. The Black Butler one got best comedy I believe, and out of the rest it was the funniest, and they didn't throw the yaoi fanservice card to win, they did it after they won. The one who took "best crowd reaction" did get the best reaction, even if it was because he made a giant sign that said "you lost the game"

The reason I critiqued is because I'm a film student; I'm used to doing it. It's not like I was in the back screaming at the stage like a few people were doing over the bad joke writing of the people who did show up. I was expecting people to do memes in skits, but for 2 of the 10 skits to make their main jokes be "lost the game" bullshit is quite sad. If it was 2009 still sure, but fuck man it's very old today.
I am entering in summer for a walk on, but perhaps a skit if I can get my friends together for some good practice of it. I'm not going to waste other people's time if I don't think we can pull something off well. Am I a cunt for wanting to point out to my friend who does cosplays with me errors in how other presented themselves on stage? Probably, I don't really care if you think I'm a cunt over being disappointed in the poor turn out for the masquerade when the last 2 before this were so much better.

I messaged Katie with some questions today and here is what she sent back:
Q: On Facebook's sac anime pages people have been talking about how some of the masquerade rules may be changed for summer to better fit other groups into the masquerade.
I've seen a lot of other cons doing this recently. (Also if this rule is not being changed- why was the Phantom skit allowed to enter and compete?)
The phantom skit was disqualified from Presentation Judging (they didn't enter for Craftsmanship...), but I let them go on stage because I didn't want to embarrass them and we had plenty of time. My assistant didn't catch it during sign-in while I was helping another group, so I didn't see them until line-up, and watched the skit to see if they'd at least used something theme appropriate. When they didn't, I made a note for the judges.

As for how I'm reworking the Craftsmanship rules, the spirit of the theme will still be intact. It's never been "anime only". The theme of SacAnime is: "A Celebration of Asian Culture and Popular Media". So as far as the masquerade is concerned, that has included any movies, books, anime, manga, video games, tv shows, toys, or music from Japan, Korea, China, and the Philippines. The way I'm reworking it will allow for media produced in other countries that is intended as a direct homage to the theme. For instance, although Wreck it Ralph itself is an American movie, the game "Sugar Rush" in the story was an homage to Japanese video games, and therefore, characters from Sugar Rush would be ok. However, characters from "Hero's Duty", an homage to Halo, would not.

However, the burden of proof lies with the entrant. So if someone wants to enter the masquerade with something that doesn't seem theme appropriate, its up to them to effectively demonstrate why it is.

I will also be adding an "exhibition" category for non-theme walk-ons who don't want to be judged for Craftsmanship, but want to show off their hard work to an audience.

>> No.6554204

>>6554201
Q: For the last masquerade did 20 of the acts really not show up, or where they turned away for not being anime enough?

They just didn't show up. We had an hour and a half timeslot available, and the judges and I sat there until the very end, but they never showed. On the bright side, we were able to get a lot more stand-by entries on stage, including the girl who won Best of Show.

I only had to turn away 2 entries this year for not being in theme, and both of them were walk-ons from Batman. I catch most non-theme entries during online registration, so I can save them the time and embarrassment of waiting until the show to be turned away.

People (who think I can't hear them, or think I don't know how to read message boards...) often complain that it's "not fair" that I don't let non-theme entries into the contest, but few of them take the time to ask me why. It's not because I don't like Sac area cosplayers. It's quite the opposite. I've been involved with cosplay in Sacramento for longer than SacAnime has been around, and although the level of costuming has definitely improved over the past decade, 90% of our cosplayers are not ready to go toe to toe with experienced SCA or SciFi costume makers. If I open it up to everyone, I open it up to EVERYONE. That means homestuck trolls with paperclay horns and Raspunzel will be directly competing against latex Klingons with hand-linked chainmail and Warhammer 30k Space Marines in fiberglass armor with full hydraulics and internal battery powered cooling systems.

So I'm working hard to find a balance between the sandbox and the Demilitarized Zone where our local costumers can show off their work, keep within I.C.G. standards, and not get the crap stomped out of them by professional costumers who just come to win awards.

Q:-For the craftsmanship walk on, would characters created in anime style images be allowed? A group of my friends want to do the board tans from 4chan, basically a humanized version of what a board is named for. 4chan is very anime related, and all the characters have been drawn in art that way, and there are some comics online of the characters. We don't want to do a lot of detail work only to be turned down at the door after months of work on these costumes.
4chan is ineligible as a source for a totally different reason: it's not family friendly. Content presented at SacAnime has to be PG13. 4chan knows it's not appropriate for kids, which is why Global Rule #2 is:

2. If you are under the age of 18, or it is illegal for you to view the materials contained on this website, discontinue browsing immediately.

http://www.4chan.org/rules

I know there is stuff ON 4chan that's "safe" for kids, but the site itself isn't.

So yeah, at least I asked before I got into heavy detail on the costumes, but fairly mad over the last answer. It's not like I'd be on stage screaming "go to 4chan and see tits and dicks"

"I know you probably want to keep the masses of lazy people in grey paint out
1. "You know" wrong. It is never been my goal to keep people out. That's just ridiculous. It is my job to enforce the rules, and it's up to the individual contestants to work within the rules. I love to see people using the rules as a framework for their creativity, instead of treating it like a handicap. I want people to impress me with how they incorporated the theme into their non-theme cosplay, not just sit around complaining about it.
2.All costumes take dedication and hours of work, regardless of of genre. The amount of time (and money) varies from costume to costume, but none of it is a lazy person's game. But in craftsmanship judging, we're not judging how hard the cosplayer worked. Instead we're assessing the quality of the finished product in comparison to their skill level. So a beginner who does a really solid job with their bodypaint, iron on transfer, and sculpey horns, is going to do better than the expert who shows up in an elaborate ball gown with their seams running.

3. Homestuck, as popular as it is, or as impressive as the character designs are, is an American webcomic. As a fellow webcreator, I love seeing the candy corn horns walking around, because I'm glad Andrew has so many fans. And it's a shame we don't have more general media and comic conventions in NorCal where Homestuckers and other Western media can compete. (Like SAC-CON, AOD, or WonderCon) But the fact remains that Homestuck is in no way within the theme of SacAnime's masquerade.

However, the option to have Homestuck characters appear in the masquerade as either part of a theme appropriate group, or in an entirely theme appropriate skit has always been there. But nobody has thought outside the box enough to submit anything. I mean, come on, if the TF2 guys can come up with a skit effectively incorporating otaku culture, then certainly the Homestuckers can do it too!
