So seagulls, a lot of us go to conventions and eat some tasty food and a lot of times some not so good for you food. I wanted to know when yall go to conventions what do you eat? do you bring food with you or do you only eat takeout and fast food? Mainly do you have a food tradition for any convention? I know I started putting chocolate chip cookies on Pizza and it has been the only way I really eat pizza.
List come crazy con food or drinks here, state your worst.

What I've done for the past two years has really worked out well for me. I always book a hotel with an executive floor that does breakfast and has an all-day lounge for free snacks and beverages all day. These places have all sorts of food, you can grab bottles of water and fruits and muffins and bagels all day and often have an epic breakfast. The floor is always usually nice and its great to have a calm, quiet place to start your day and eat in your PJ's with a nice view.

I'll usually grab a few bottles of water, a muffin, and apple and maybe some sort of sweet to have for lunch at the convention because I'm usually not very hungry in costume. Then I'll come back after the con and splurge on a nice dinner every night at one of the local highlights. Not having to buy breakfast, lunch or snacks and coffee every day saves so much money its ridiculous. More than pays for the extra Executive cost.

I've been going to conventions for a long time so I'm a little past the coffee maker ramen point, I need to eat well all day or I'll get cranky.

>> No.6540039

I eat out at nice restaurants. Sometimes I bring my lunch from home, if it's a one day event.

We feel like we're on holiday and since we're on holiday we may as well eat nice food.

Like anon said, I always book a hotel with free breakfast. I also bring a rice cooker and a bunch of rice/quinoa. It's really easy, you just plug in the rice cooker. I'm incredibly cheap. I'll only go out to eat while at a con if there's a special occasion (my BF and I have the same birthday and it almost always falls on a con weekend)

I've never taken food to cons so I usually live off Subway or whatever fast-food places they have around, and also eat out at a restaurant for one of the nights. If it's a hotel though it's usually better to order from there, even if it is a little expensive.

Kitacon and Amecon were kind enough to provide free breakfast though which was good (aka 'stack as much bacon on the plate as you can to feed you for the rest of the day').

You would be surprised. I have been to conventions all over Canada and the US and at least one hotel has this option, usually the Crowne Plaza if there is one!

Since its executive suite only it may not be advertised unless you look for it, so I'd call and ask! It just eliminates so much stress and saves a lot of time and money, last breakfast I had was amazing too. Waffles and oatmeal and breakfast sandwiches and all the fruit and pastries you could eat. And lattes.

I bring small snacks. Most cons we've ordered pizza to the hotel room. Some have fast food close within walking distance.

During San Diego Comic Con, the con itself and some of the industries work with local restaurants and have some good deals and promotions that benefit everyone. But there's plenty of food options during that time.

We usually have a "last meal" on Thursday before we get on the train. We'll splurge on junk food and fill up before we get to the convention and spend the rest of the weekend on packed food or takeout.

I've started buying hotel rooms when I can, but we still almost always end up eating out. The past AWA, a few of my friends were taking up money, and ordered a bunch of pizzas to the con area, and gave those out, so that was my dinner, and the hotel I was staying at the first night had a breakfast bar. The last day, I stayed at a friend's house, and we got tacos before going to the con.
There's one con I go to, Seishun, that's just surrounded by food. I usually end up spending more money on food than anything else when I go there, since it's just so close.

I used to just bring water and a few granola bars, when I would drive to and from the con every day, but my metabolism is too fast for such small food, and I ended up with terrible headaches halfway through the day.

Although seriously, no offence or anything but American chocolate is extremely foul. My sister brought some home from her last trip to New York and it was... I can't even describe it. I don't understand why people would willingly put it into their mouths but I guess if you've never tasted anything different you wouldn't know how bad it is.

British chocolate isn't far off though. Ever since Kraft took over Cadbury's it's gone completey tits up.

Do you get Aero bars in America? Aero bars used to be nice as fuck but over the last 3-4 years they've started tasting like American shit. Seems like the only nice chocolate left is Galaxy, Kinder and Lindt.

I'm the kind of person who doesn't eat chocolate a lot, it's very much a special treat for me to get it so I always notice when the ingredients have changed.

Cadburys atm, the change is subtle but I can guarantee it's going to get worse and worse as they slowly begin to introduce more cheaper substitutes for the original ingredients. At the moment one of the biggest changes is that Cadburys chocolate not has a waxier, blander taste to it which is a direct sign of them having pumped the mixture full of vegetable fats to substitute... I can't remember what the vegetable fat substitutes, but it's one of the key ingredients.

Kraft are such fucking assholes. Why take something that's been around for generations that taste great, and turn it into something that tastes fucking nasty, all to save a few pennies?

I usually travel to the city a day before the con and tend to do a trip to a local grocery store. If the hotel room offers a small fridge, I buy a stuff like a bottle of chocolate milk, grapes (since they are easy to eat and make no mess), Karelian pasties (a traditional Finnish food, I fucking love those) and those really teeny tiny boxes of butter. Also chocolate. And at the morning of the con I warm the pastries, slap on some butter and drink chocolate milk. I take grapes and chocolate (and sometimes the pastries) with me to go and grab a bottle of water.

When I'm part of the staff at a con I usually eat breakfast at the green room/staff room and grab some sandwiches/fruit with me for a lunch. If I can, I eat at the cafeteria if the con has such.

Since I keep forgetting to eat a proper meal when I'm working through the whole weekend, so I have always chocolate or some healthier snacks with me. After the con's closed however: junk food.

American candies and chocolates really don't taste as good as even regular Australian chocolate/lollies! I prefer the texture of ours, somehow it's nicer and feels less full of artificial flavours and preservatives or something, and the lollies/candies are usually gummier/chewier here? The only american chocolate I'll willingly eat is Hershey's Cookies and Cream.

I am a chocolate snob though. Lindt is awesome (all that christmas discount stuff!)! Anything made out of chocolate couverture (most fine belgian chocolates) is divinely rich and smooth and creamy. Hot chocolate made out of this shit is the bomb (Melbournites will know what I'm talking about - Koko Black, San Churro, The Hardware Societe!)

And although it's on the pricey side, when it comes to Otakon foods, the Pratt Street Ale House (straight across the street and a little east of the convention center's main entrance on Pratt Street). Great food, not terribly priced -- especially considering its location -- and the house brews are delicious. I especially suggest the 3 Lions Ale (I'm not a beer or ale guy, and I love it), pairs well with their southwest burger, their raven burger or their crab cake salad.

For fast food, the obvious one is (aside from McD's and etc) are the the Baja Fresh stores. There's several within a ten - fifteen minute drive, and I've never had a complaint eating there. As for non-standard or fast food, several of the suggestions in 6541021's post are good, and there's a few good places over in the mall across Light Street (conveniently, you can cross the skybridge that goes between the One East Pratt Street building and the Hyatt, or from the parking structure just to the south of the Hyatt).

I don't like eating during cons, I feel that it is a waste of time. I'm just generally horrrrrible to my body during the weekend. For Metrocon, I stay at the Embassy and eat like a pig for the breakfast buffet. But dinner? EL O EL. I don't like to eat. Hell, I HATE going back to the room. I never go there except to change for the rave. With other cons, if there is no free breakfast I literally wake up, get ready and head to the con. I drink some water before I leave. I might munch on some chocolate pocky. That's really it. When my mum drives me to cons (I was in an accident so I'm really sketchy about driving for now), we bring a cooler, soy milk, fried chicken, eggs, fruit, gallons of water (we drink like camels), alfalfa for my hamster, and home made bread. She eats the food, I don't. It just WASTES TIME.

I usually end up going to whatever food court is nearby for lunch or dinner.

One year my friend and I brought a loaf of bread, peanut butter, and jelly, and we made sandwiches for breakfast every morning. It was a good plan.

Lolita's have a deal during SDCC where you can get a drink and some carne asada fries for $5. I remember the other closer restaurants being stupidly overpriced (ex. $8 milkshake). But whatever, usually I just get some food and then drink water. I cannot express this enough, DRINK A LOT OF WATER AND STAY HYDRATED.

Real talk though, honestly if you can't afford to properly feed yourself at a con correctly, don't bother going. Instead of living off salty instant top ramen for a fucking figure, stay home and save money until you could properly feed yourself for a con. Or hell, bring a ton of fruits, breads, and other cheap but healthy foods.

I'm glad that the con I'll be going to this year is located in an area I'm starting to frequent. I have several locations prorammed in my GPS, ranging from Whole Foods to fast food chains and an awesome sweets store.

I do have to say that for a health-conscious store, Whole Foods does have a pretty greasy pizza. Not Sam's level of greasy, but still a bit greasy than what you would expect.

When I go to cons I see it like a mini vacation so I treat myself and eat nice.
I will usually find a nice restaurant in the area (preferably Japanese, in convention spirit).

>The aftertaste of American chocolate leaves my tongue feeling waxy and just overall not good.
What causes this? I'm American, but I can never eat our cheap plain chocolate because it feels like it just coats my tongue. (I'll fuck up some KitKats and Twix, tho.)
Ferrero Rocher and Lindt are the only two other chocolates I can stand at this point.

I always buy food at the con. Granted, I only go to Anime Boston, and theres a crapton of fast food there, as well as the Shaws next door. Saves SO much time.

I did go to AX once, and seeing as the nearest non convenience store was like, an hour walk away, my friends and I just ate a steady diet of Carls Jr, Pizza Hut, Johnny Rockets, and Qdoba.

Twice I've called a hotel and made a decision based on microwave availability. Both times I've brought microwave food. Both times I didn't get a microwave. Shit.

As a few others have mentioned bringing a cooler is a great idea.Free ice at the hotel(refill it in the morning and evening hours). This way you can keeps cold food cold and drinks cold.
Plus i like bringing fresh fruit(apples and oranges).
When you bring a hot plate you can easily bring a small soup pan and utensils.Tupperware or rubbermaid containers to eat out of.
Despite what some say MRE's(meals ready to eat) and dehyrated foods(such as mountain man) are actually pretty good.

Ha. Usually my bros and I tend to smoke hookah and cigars on a Thursday before the con but never eat junk food and other shit like a last meal. I should suggest that.

What I usually do at a on in terms of eating is usually order a pizza or got out and get something cheap or get a buffett if I plan on drinking that whole night.

I most times go to the store nearby and buy foodstuffs to prepare at the con. Mostly salads, cold sandwiches and the like, lots and lots of fruit. We usually pool our money and then offer leftovers to other people who stop by our room(this happens often). Though my group of friends always goes to a nice restaurant one of the evenings, so that's always good.

My boyfriend and I go shopping right before!
We start off with a cooler and a bag of ice (most hotels have ice machines so we just refill every night)

We usually bring some sort of cereal (with a 1/2 gal of milk) or breakfast item..
last year we managed to keep eggs and we brought a portable stove top and pan.. Yum Egg and cheese bagels!
we also bring lots of fruits (dehydrated too!) and veggies especially since they don't need to be kept cold.
Then there is lunch meats and cheeses and chips/trailmixes!!

We usually eat out at night unless we are in a hurry for a photoshoot. Did I mention lots and lots of Cliff Bars/ granola bars?
oh and a pack of water

I've been attending Katsucon for several years and have yet to try any of the resturants in the inner harbor area. I know last year certain venues offered discounts for cosplayers.

Does anyone have experiences/suggestions for restaurants in the area or is it best to stick with baja Fresh, Pot Bellys, and Subway?

For actual meals I usually just have something around the con. For snacks jerky and trail mix from costco do the trick. And specifically for cgl gatherings (for ALA and Fanime for instance) there's this bread dip I make that everyone seems to like. Only downside to it is that it'll make your sodium levels skyrocket. Its tasty as hell, though.

To those going to Sakuracon:

There is a crepe stand outside. Don't bother with it. You will have to wait at LEAST an hour in line, and their crepes really aren't worth the wait.

Lesson learned last year.

If you guys think American chocolate is shit tier, you obviously never had Mexican chocolate. That stuff is the worst ever and I'll never understand how they can eat it.

For con food, I usually locate the nearest grocery store in the area and pack it full of ice and some cold cuts and other sandwich fixings to last a day. Then I buy some cookies, crackers, and dried fruits for snacks. We usually have at least one dinner together at a restaurant during our stay.
