Black seagulls, how much does your complexion influence your costume choices?
Obviously there are fairly few black characters in anime, maybe more in /co/, which narrows the selection quite a bit if we stick to only those characters.
Do any of you use cosmetics to come closer to a light-skinned character's appearance or do you feel it would be unnecessary, or even think of it as 'whitewashing'?

>> No.6554802

I'm fairly medium, as far as black skintones go, but, no, I never let my complexion dictate who I do and do not cosplay. I'll tweak colours so it's more flattering to my tone, but, other than that, there's not really much I can do.
I don't really care if something comes off as whitewashing, or even blackface; it's just a costume, and when you're in costume, you're not really "you." That is, how you may look is not who you really are. Personally, I don't use cosmetics to change my colour, but I'm not going to get onto someone who does.
I learned a long time ago to disregard what others think about my cosplaying certain characters- unless I do some major surgery, I'm going to look like this forever, so I might as well start embracing it.

>> No.6554817

I really don't give a damn what skin color someone I cosplay as, except I want to cosplay Kaworu and he's like negative white. Any other time I opt for masked cosplays or cosplays using body paint.
I use skin bleaching cream to even out the acne scars on my face as far as makeup.

Unless I'm doing it to be funny, completely. If my skin doesn't match what I'm trying to dress as, I might as well wear a poorly put together / constructed outfit. If you're not going to care how you look, then why bother? Unless for the sake of irony, then where's the fun if it's inaccurate?

Not black, but I do have a natural medium-tan.

Unfortunately, I am a little hesitant when it comes to cosplaying lighter-skinned characters. For the most part, it doesn't stop me from cosplaying who I want to cosplay, but I do feel a little self-conscious when I do.

I do wear make up one or two shades lighter than my my skin tone; it doesn't make much of a difference but it makes me feel a little better.

Skin color is part of well representing a character. If you were cosplaying a character who had an unnatural skin tone such as blue or red and someone didn't paint themselves that color people would call them out on it. You would not be considered a good cosplayer if you were dressed as Kneesocks and didn't have red skin.

Seeing a black Sailor Moon as just as inaccurate as a pale Korra and they bother me equally.

Consider the following. Anyone can paint themselves blue/red for a costume. However if you're going to argue over natural skin colors, that would open Pandora's box.

You can't cosplay Korra because you're white. You also can't cosplay Korra if you're anything that isn't Inuit–Yupik because that's what she is. You can't cosplay all these characters because although you're pale skinned, you're not Asian.

Anybody can cosplay a character with an unnatural skin color because they can use body paint, but it's very hard to pull off changing your skin to a different natural color without causing controversy. We all need to stop bringing race into anime characters. Race has nothing to do with skin color. And perceiving any racial traits in anime makes you look like an asshat. Sailor Moon is an anime girl, she's drawn white but that doesn't make her caucasian ffs, all of the characters live in Japan and they are only thought of as Japanese because they live there. None of them have an explicit race.

When people crossplay they're not even the same gender as the characters.

They are just costumes, that's where you should be looking for accuracy. Skintone or not, a good costume and wig all that matters in the end.

This is the type of mentality that kills western cosplay. "It doesn't matter what I look like so long as I sew the clothes right!"

Sorry hun, but yes, how you look plays a HUGE part in cosplay. A cute white/asian girl cosplaying a pretty, fair-skinned character is a better cosplayer than a fat black woman doing the same character.

People like you dont want to admit this because you feel telling a black person they shouldnt do something is "racist". It isn't. Just like a white person shouldn't cosplay as Dee Jay from Street Fighter, we all have to cosplay to what is suitable to our appearance.

Until you realize this, you'll always be a shitty cosplayer.

Well actually, it's been proven by social scientists that there are certain features that are seen as universally attractive. Even in places like the amazon rain forest, where the natives have not been exposed to western media if you show them a picture of Brad Pitt and one of say, Rowan Atkinson (Mr.Bean) they'll immediately chose Pitt as the "attractive" one. There was an article on this somewhere, but i don't remember.

Same thing even with babies who aren't even capable of thinking in the way we do about looks and beauty. Show them pictures of attractive white people's faces that are considered attractive and they become pleased, show them pictures of black people who look like typical blacks (large lips, flat nose, sloping face with protruding jaw) and they become displeased.

It's natural. White features are beautiful, negroid features aren't.

What's ironic about that pic is how on average, East Asian (i.e. Japanese) faces are far more neotenous (which means they are likelier to have large eyes and wide faces) then Caucasian faces. So in essence, Japanese faces typify anime faces more than Caucasians do.

The stereotype that Asians have small eyes isn't as true as we've thought.

I myself don't think Nordid-Alpine types (what that girl probably is, basically) can look as anime-like as East Asians can because if you look closely, you'll notice anime faces are modeled after Japanese faces.

Here's some neat examples of European facial features.

I'm Asian, but even though most anime characters are Japanese, I usually try to only cosplay ones that look more "Asian" or whatever. So if the girl has pink hair, big tits, and blue eyes, I won't attempt her, even if she has a Japanese name and background and I like her character.
There will always be at least one girl in a group with brown eyes and dark hair, and chances are I like that character just as much, and can pull her off better.
But then again, there usually isn't "that one black girl" in a group of school girls, so I can see why a lot of people just ditch that mentality. But still... Sailor Venus is just not a good character for a relatively dark black person, probably.
For this Asian vs. Caucasian vs. Black crap, it really depends on the individual. Most Asians I know don't look anything like either the bad or good example pictures.

People are acting like every white person can choose any white character, but we can't. We all have certain aspects of us that look odd in certain costumes. I have big boobs, so all the cute loli characters look stupid on me. An older woman might need to choose more mature characters. A woman with stretch marks wouldn't choose a midriff. there's not a lot of tanned skin characters from series I like.
but there are always characters that require skinpaint to cosplay, so it doesn't matter what color you are if you are just going to paint yourself pink or whatever

Actually, many scientific tests have determined that it isn't societal. They've done a color test on children from a ton of cultural backgrounds and nationalities. They see colors a certain way, lighter colors make them happier, and darker colors make them feel sad or angry. White people are a light brown, which has a happier effect on children. It's not cultural, it's just one of those ways that science is "racist".

>>6555123
I disagree, I think the best cosplays take into account RL details. For example, subtle patterns for a cosplay of a character that wears a solid color can look pretty fantastic.

Skintone doesn't really matter all that much. What matters is someone choosing a costume that looks good on them (perhaps slightly adjusting the colors of the outfit to make sure that it does) and putting in effort to construct the costume well and style the wig right. That's all that really matters in the end.

>> No.6557179

>>6557159
What...? Choosing different patterns isn't going to change what the character originally looks like, and choosing flattering colors for yourself isn't going to make you look more like a character if that's not the colors the wear.

>> No.6557186

>>6557179
But it'll make you look better in the costume, and that's what really matters. Most people aren't going to be wandering around convention halls with art books and holding it up to your costume to make sure you've got the exact shade of gold. (Plus, official art can vary wildly in color a lot of the time, anyway.) Good presentation is what REALLY matters in cosplay.

....whO THE FUCK CARES HOLY SHIT

I'm a black cosplayer, I've been cosplaying for a while now, and I have black friends who cosplay just as hard as I do. I cosplayed as Rei Ayanami at Mechacon last year, with a septum ring in, and I got multiple photoshoots, people recognized my character, and other Evangelion cosplayers chased me down to take pictures. And it wasn't even my best cosplay, I borrowed it from my friend, who is a black guy. And he got even more praise than I did. Sure, get a pale white girl in the same outfit, people may like her version more, but I personally could care the fuck less. I was so happy at that con, and that was all that matters.

Elitist fucks always have to ruin fun things. If you have a problem with darker people cosplaying as lighter characters, so fucking be it, but what good is drilling "YOU'RE A BAD COSPLAYER BECAUSE YOU'RE AFRICAN COSPLAYING AS A PUREBRED EUROPEAN" into people's heads? Of course if you match the character better, the cosplay would go more your way. But if I want to cosplay Rei, or a white girl wants to cosplay Michiko, we "shouldn't", or "it's not the best idea", because of some factor that we can't control? Sounds like a load of horse shit to me.

At the end of the day, whether you're fat, skinny, short, tall, black, white, boy, girl, if you represent a character in a good way and youre happy with the outcome, none of the afforementioned should matter. Even if the cosplay itself isn't pleasing to the eye, if the person wearing it is happy, why should it matter?

We're quick to say that people who see cosplaying as "weird" or "crazy" are judgemental assholes, but we do even more judging in our own community.

Fucking idiots everywhere, I swear.

Whoever has a problem with cosplaying "white" characters because you have dark skin: You are beautiful and a well done cosplay on an attractive person will look good no matter what. I adore the cosplayer who does the amazing Pluto. Does anyone know who I mean?
Maybe I'm just more tolerant because I'm white and I grew up in an area with more black people than white for a while but at that age the only difference we really knew of was our hair and we'd do hairstyles on each other and go "Oh it looks different on your hair." That sort of thing. One of the fun times I remember is going over a friend's house and her mom spending forever braiding my waistlength straight hair. I know I'm going TMI and tl;dr but after so many years of stupid racism on 4chan I'm sick of all of it. To me if you have a beautiful personality and manners that's all I really judge you on. So in order to have fun, they have to cosplay as a character they and no one else gives a shit about since they're so minor just because their skin is also brown?

There are plenty of noteworty and recognizable black characters in various forms of fiction. It's not as much of a limitation as you make it out to be.

Every good cosplayer considers their appearance for their choice of what they should cosplay. Though, as you pointed out, you don't have to be good if you don't want to.

You can cosplay what you want, but don't cry foul when your called out on it.

You're so cute. And narrow minded.

Yeah, everyone should cosplay to their body type, but the thing is with darker skinned people is not only do you have to find a good character that is in your skin range, but then even after that you have to find one that fits your body. Not saying that white cosplayers don't need to find a suitable skin tone, since a pasty Yoko isn't good for anyone, just that the selection is fucking huge whereas ours isn't.

I've been doing it for years and have never been "called out on it." Not everyone is as narrow minded as you.
