US education is very western centric, much like europe. You usually have U.S. history and world history, which is just the most basic of basic highlights of western thought. We barely touched on anything arabic or asian besides mentions of other religions. Though I actually find U.S. history pretty fascinating for skipping the thousands of years of territorial struggle.

Each state will likely require you to study up on their own history as well to graduate. While I'm not aware of any historical tensions between finland and russia, I doubt either of those country would care about the cotton gin, choctaw indians, or carpetbaggers.

It's all in the matter of perspective. As long people are aware and open to new information, there is nothing wrong with being more naturally inclined to information that is closer to us.

Ok, so I stumbled upon this thread on a whim, and I'm actually going to tack my name on this because I'm honestly looking for information.

I've been trying to figure out where the name came from recently because I got curious, and, I actually found a timeline that puts the movie lolita out in 1998 in Japan, which is fairly early in the documented timeline of this fashion's history. BUT I can't find any pre-1998 publications on fashion to see if any of them call it lolita (or what they called it) before then.
Mirror of timeline translation (it's no longer on the live web where I found it): http://www.rainedragon.com/2004/04/

A number of lolita brands existed prior to the movie release, but they didn't necessarily have websites.

So, just sort of as a shout out, if anyone has anything pre-1998 that features lolita fashion and calls it... anything, really, I'd be interested in seeing it? or being told the title and date if it's something I can buy still (like actual books).

It already says why on the Japanese wiki page for Lolita. That page also doesn't list ero as being any kind of style and lists punk lolita as lolita punk, being a punk style inspired by lolita and not the other way around.
