That is a very good question, but knowing /cgl/ they hate anything that comes from Florida; so I doubt this thread will grow.

>> No.6929214

Going all weekend, cosplaying from the LoTR MMO. Planning on verbally abusing Homestuck kids that get too crazy or out of line, because if Supercon gets kicked out of the hotel, I don't know if they can even get another venue to support the size of the event.

The only thing I care about is meeting Dave Gibbons. I have a set of Watchmen comics from the first printing back in the 80's, and I will wait in line all day to get them autographed.

Yeah I'd be pissed if Supercon got kicked out because of the homestucks. I don't even want to wear lolita but I don't have much else. I went last in 2010 and didn't have the best time, but looking at the site I see it's really grown since then.

I'm actually looking forward to it, I just wish hussie wasn't there. But I am planning to get a picture with George Takei.

My girlfriend is a family friend of Allen Bellman and he was pretty awesome the last time I spoke to him. I'm also looking forward to the cosplayers.

>How will you avoid the inevitable gray paint getting on your costume or outfit?
I tend to stay as far away from them. Also, groups of kids aged 12-14 who dress as either Kingdom Hearts characters or Bleach/Naruto. Last time, I wandered too close and my headache didn't go away for weeks. Auditory and olfactory overload.

Watching the miamistuck dramu brew from afar and hopefully getting to chat with Hussie. I'm also looking forward to seeing some friends and putting on my make-up both days.
>How will you avoid the inevitable gray paint getting on your costume or outfit?
By not letting any stuckaboos hug or touch me and by carrying around some final seal to casually encourage them to seal themselves.

Rei Ayanami (Friday), Probably Kanaya from Homestuck (Saturday), and probably Haruhi Suzumiya on Sunday.
>What are you looking forward to?
The delicierous SFLstuck dramu. From what I hear, it's bound to boil over and cause a few shitfits during the con.
That, and the late night panels. It's the first Supercon that I've had 18+ friends to drag around with me.
>How will you avoid the inevitable gray paint getting on your costume or outfit?
Sealing the shit out of my own paint and not touching anyone/anything. The Homestucks usually take up shelter in that one corner of MACC near the top of the escalator, so getting touched by one is probably unlikely.

.7 is the ideal waist to hip for almost every guy. Virtually every playboy model has a waist to hip ratio of .7 and so do most Hollywood actresses(Marilyn Monroe had a .67 waist to hip ratio) and they showed a number of men different drawings of women that were the same except for waist to hip ration and thinness and the men overwhelmingly picked the girls with a waist to hip ratio of .7 regardless of how chunky they were. So yeah, don't worry about being chunky, just shave off a bit from your waist and you'll be a goddess.

And since that wasn't con related I wanted to point out that I saw this Robin chick who looked really cute from a distance but when I went up to her to ask for a pick I noticed she was with her mom and seemed a bit younger than I initially though. Made me feel like Mark Renton from Trainspotting for a second there. She was really flexible too. I asked her for a pic of her kicking me and I expected her to pretend to kick my stomach or leg but she raised her leg up so fast up to my head that my reaction in the pic is a bit genuine, I actually kind tried a half assed block as you can see. She's really flexible and actually held the position for a good 7 seconds or so.

How to know when people have no business being craftsmanship judges:

-Yawning, texting and complaining about how the judging process takes too long...while a contestant is in front of you for pre-judging.
-Not asking any questions
-Refusing to get up, lean forward or come out from behind the table
-Having no idea what french seams, leather tooling, resin casting or historically accurate undergarments are
-Buying all your costumes, including the ones you wear during award presentation

It isn't the judges fault. They are cosplay print models and people who commission their costumes. It's Mike's fault for completely replacing the cosplay department with people who don't make costumes. Casual fans will never understand or appreciate what goes into real costumes. Hardcore cosplayers need to steer clear and not compete.

I don't think they had a good plan of securing the convention honestly, they had one dude yelling at people to enter through a specific door, I'm assuming to keep an eye out for anything that could hurt other people.

I mean, I'm all for safety, but security was remarkably understaffed and very unprepared for the con. I actually saw one having his hand on his holster while watching some kids play ninja, as if he was expecting someone to pull a real weapon out and hurt someone.

>> No.6958865

Not the security, but there was one guy who had approached us for walking into the video game area when they were closing. Rather than simply tell us they were closing and everyone had to leave, he asked us where we came from and told us to go back the way we came and that he didn't care what we thought and gave us a shit ton of attitude for simply asking what the hell was going on. Other than that, it's the security guards' job to enforce that no one is soliciting in the lobby area. Otherwise, it would be far too difficult for people to enter or leave like it was Saturday where even trying to go from the entrance of the con past the stands selling things was actually worse than the traffic to park outside. They were noticeably irritated because they would ask people to clear the lobby and people would completely ignore them.

For anyone who still might go next year, I've gone three times and am just throwing this out there.

The Ten Commandments of Supercon

1. Thou shalt not constantly stop in the middle of the exhibition room in a cosplay larger than the walkways.
2. Thou shalt not interact with Supercon staff or security.
3. Thou shalt try very hard not to attend on Saturday unless absolutely necessary.
4. Thou shalt not ride the crowded escalator upstairs into the boiling inferno of human body heat.
5. Thou shalt avoid Homestuck and Hetalia cosplayers at all costs.
6. Thou shalt not publicly besmirch the name of Supercon Mike or his assoctiates, as thou may be forcably removed from the convention.
7. Thou shalt not expect to meet guests without spending ridiculous amounts of money for the privilege.
8. Thou shalt not abruptly jump on, hug, or otherwise physically interact with unknown individuals, regardless of how sexually attracted to their character thou are.
9. Thou shalt not kid thyself and attempt to park anywhere near the Miami Airport Convention Center or the Double Tree by Hilton.
10. Thou shalt hail Cobra.

Oh geez, so was I! And yeah, I heard that too. My friends got to the con before me and pre-reg'd me, but weren't sure about putting down my real name.

There were just so many things wrong with that contest that it's ridiculous. It's one thing to want to have a contest to make everyone feel special, but don't tout it as a craftsmanship contest and not award those who worked really hard on actually creating what they made. I don't think it's right to award someone who didn't make their costume $200, while giving best craftsmanship only $50. This year's contest was a joke and a slap in the face to anyone who competed. Having a panel of judges who don't even make their own costumes? WUT.

If anything, I will day trip it, but unless they change the cosplay department BACK to what it was, I am no longer going to compete in it. A costume you clearly did not make yourself has no place in a craftmanship competition. There were plenty of OTHER costume contests to enter during the weekend like the Runway one; which from what I hear, they actually ASKED questions and were engaging.

Well overall Saturday was alright managed a good amount of pictures, go to the panels I wanted and get a good seat for the costume contest. Although it was extremely crowded and I almost ended up getting suck in a pile up going up the escalators in the back cause some guys staled the whole line. After that I avoided those and just went by the ones located at the front of the con as they were far less crowded. Saturday I was wearing a generic purple/white sailor school uniform.
Sunday I said fuck that and just went in a airy dress.

Hey, guys. I've been a volunteer/staff member for a number of years now, and I wanted to address some of the issues about the staff and security being particularly *rude* this year.

A lot of what >>6959554 says is pretty spot on. Nobody hates Mike. He pays for hotel rooms, gets free autographs and meet-and-greets for staff members, and generally takes care of us really well in exchange for us putting in an appropriate amount of work into the con. I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing that he expects us to put in something resembling good work in exchange for taking care of us this much throughout the con. So basically what we're left with is a stressed out guest relations department who's dealing with 8,000 Homestuck, Trekkie, or Power Rangers nerds all at once, trying to make sure everything is going smoothly.

To top it all off, the guest relations department changes pretty much every year at this point, with a new person running the department each year. This year, we had a fantastic department head who was actually approachable and friendly, and it made for a smoother working environment, despite the fact that we were SEVERELY understaffed due to a series of changes leading up to the show that left us working with a single event coordinator, two experienced staff members, and a legion of shitty, lazy first-year volunteers that dwindled down to about 25% of its original size by the end of Saturday.

Personally, I tried to be polite, friendly, and approachable to anybody who spoke to me, simply because I was following the example set by my department head (I was at the front of the Hussie line giving everyone high-fives and being a pretty cool dude, and people were thanking me for not screaming at the top of my lungs at people having the AUDACITY to peek through the curtains).

(cont'd)

I did have to have a sit down with some of the staff and security who were being unnecessarily aggressive toward con-goers in the Hussie line, forcing them to delete pictures off the phone under the threat of removing them from the line. That shit WASN'T cool at all, and I stopped it as soon as it started.

I hope you guys can understand that we're doing the best we can. Our department is pretty poorly trained for what it is (nobody's fault, it's hard as fuck, and nobody seems to have the right attitude for it), and nobody was really equipped to handle the velocity of people who were there.

I want to try to work on these things so that we can drop the idea that Supercon has a legendarily rude and disorganized staff. The communication between Guest Relations and Security was absolute balls, and people weren't doing things they were supposed to be doing. I could tell you a story about how we kicked a bunch of people off the wrestling chairs for absolutely no reason other than the fact that the guy who ran security, as cool as he is, doesn't fucking understand words, and made us look like a bunch of idiots.

All of this being said, I hope we didn't put you guys off from coming back next year. I promise you, we're still working out a bunch of kinks, and trying to get everything run as smoothly as possible, while incorporating the frankly unreasonable demands of celebrities and their agents (like the no pictures of them signing bullshit that we had to enforce).

I'm glad to hear something from an actual staffer, but I was kind of pissed on Sunday because I was ping-ponged around the convention looking anyone that could tell me about vendor booths for 2014. I didn't know you may be moving next year, but instead of anyone letting me know this, they just led me on a scavenger hunt looking for people who would know. I spent at least 30 minutes late on Saturday, going from the Supercon booth to the office to the photo-op section looking for someone that would know about purchasing a booth next year. I heard 3 different accounts, one person said I couldn't that day, then two other staffers said I could on Sunday.

So the next morning I went directly to the office and waited a bit as people milled about trying to figure out if I could purchase a booth. Finally one person said they'd shoot an email to Mike, and that they may let me know later. Of course that didn't happen, and I knew I wouldn't get a chance later on Sunday to ask.

The disorganization is fucking terrible, and while I was pleased with sales, I wasn't so pleased with the shitty AC when it was packed and the fact no one had set up early booth purchases for vendors already there.

I would imagine that you were pinballed around the con because nobody actually has that information - Supercon 2014 hasn't been planned yet, and people were trying to get information out of Mike himself, which is impossible when he's in his zone. You know how to contact Mike outside of Supercon - why talk to him about a 2014 table when he's dealing with 2013? I don't mean to throw it all back in your face here, but I'm not surprised you didn't get information. I am surprised, however, that someone didn't tell you exactly what I just told you.

>I wasn't so pleased with the shitty AC
This is not Supercon's issue, this is the hotel's issue. We have problems with them every single year, whether it's half the fucking convention floor being under construction, having the water shut off all together, overbooked rooms, and shitty AC this year. If it's not one problem, it's another, and this year was no different.

But other conventions have let me purchase a booth for next year that very same weekend. Not all, mind you, and it's no excuse to say "he's dealing with 2013, why bother with 2014?" Because that's next year, I had good sales this year and I'm interested in returning? It's not hard to set up some kind of system for returning dealers, and that shows disorganization on Supercon's part. You should definitely be planning ahead for next year, and cater somewhat to dealers, who are an essential part of any convention. (Just like guests, artists, panelists, etc.)

I understand you really want to defend this convention and it has a special place in your heart, but it was definitely disorganized and saying "There are problems every year!" doesn't excuse shit.

I'm sorry I came off as overly defensive. I'm just trying to come up with some explanation as to why it might have seemed like you were being blown off. As you know, Supercon isn't the most organized con in terms of paperwork and record keeping, as everyone is kind of running around like mad men making sure everything is running smoothly. During the rest of the year, the following Supercon is being worked on, and it just seems like, for business sake, people would be taking care of booth purchases when pre-planning for Supercon 2014 starts, not while 2013 is currently happening.

But I understand your frustration, and I really do understand why you would want to make sure your booth was secure for next year, considering the decent spots sell out very quickly.

I think you would be hard-pressed to find a non-corporate convention that runs in the manner you presented. Paperwork gets lost easily in the transition from the convention center back to wherever the business run.

Train your staff better, get more volunteers, stop changing department heads every year, book a better venue, figure out something for parking, organize your paperwork better... Again, you're telling me to deal with an electrical issue in the convention center. We tried dealing with the hotel staff. Turns out you can't fix the air conditioning in a room with 11,000 people in it. And you're telling me the convention should be blamed for it.

My staff is trained, volunteers need to volunteer, you're right about the department heads every year, a venue change takes a shitload of negotiating, we don't have magical parking spaces for 20,000 people walking distance from the con - like you're complaining about shit we have no control over. Even Megacon had to do that shuttle shit to and from the convention. So did DragonCon.

We're trying the best we can in terms of dealing with the demands of hundreds of vendors, exhibitors, and guests. It's difficult fucking work, and we're working on ways to make it better. So basically what you're saying is, you're not blaming the convention, but you're mad at the convention and complaining for things it has no control over.

I've taken responsibility for everything that I said went wrong with the con. At this point, I'm defending myself over complaints about the AC, the parking spaces, and 2014 con planning, so I don't know what your point is, listing off everything I said went wrong with the con.

>Other conventions are way more organized than this and can handle complaints professionally without cursing and passing it on as someone else's problem.
I'm not a representative of Supercon, and my opinions don't reflect the people who are in charge of it. I'm just a staff member trying to give you as much information as I can. I don't get paid to do this, I do it because I have pride in my work, and I'm proud of the people I work with, and I don't appreciate people telling me that I'm not doing a good job because I couldn't keep the AC working, or that I couldn't reserve 20,000 parking spaces walking distance from the convention.

I worked my ass off all weekend, dealing with abuse from guests, agents, department heads, and I think I kicked ass. I'm not here to be a professional representative of Supercon, so if you thought I'm here to be Supercon's customer service desk, you were wildly mistaken.

Because we're having a hard time finding people who are good at their jobs. We're not "running them off," I assure you. Having someone bounced around while they, too, have a business to keep track of only to get the possibility of a returned email does not a professional setting make, and I don't think it's unreasonable to expect solid information from someone who isn't the top of the food chain and who doesn't "have a convention to run". Not to mention, the fact that someone was "too busy to sit down and file information for next year" really reflects poor organizational skills, which our purported non-Supercon-representative has pointed out numerous times as a flaw in Supercon's structure. Just because good ol' Mikey was "in his zone" doesn't mean the rest of the clusterfuck that was the staffing system at Supercon gets a free fucking ride for being ill-informed and giving vendors, guests, agents and everyone in between the runaround.

I'm not upset, don't even mean to come off as that, but I was pretty amazed at how poorly organized the con was when I started asking around about a booth next year. I'd like to think I'm a little more important to a convention than one customer in comparison to a huge company like McDonald's. McDonald's serves about 69 million people a day, how many attendees have attended Supercon ever? And let's put that in a better perspective, how many unique vendors have had booths at every Supercon ever?

Mike isn't some CEO of an international corporation, like you said, he's "the easiest person in the world to get a hold of." Maybe if this staffer didn't come off as so defensive and saintly, I wouldn't be so put off. And yet so many other cons don't have that problem.

>>6963133
It was an excuse because at first you said I came off as aggressive and you were just returning the feeling, and then when someone else said you came off aggressive, you backtracked and said that you weren't trying to be aggressive at all. Even though you originally said you were just returning what you felt from my comments.

>>6963148
Okay, let me explain my headspace, then let's start over.

I must have implied a tone I didn't intend to imply, which probably made you, understandably, more aggressive, which I reflected in my defensiveness. It was a miscommunication that I'm hoping we can nip in the bud and continue the rest of this conversation civilly and productively.

Let's get back to the point.

>Supercon takes care of paperwork
You quoted half the sentence:
>it's just not handled at the MACC, away from its office.

But what you've implied has led me to believe the problem goes farther than that, and you continue to focus on one small aspect of a conversation than much more that's come up. Do you think the fact that I couldn't sign up in advance was what really put me off? No it was the fact I was led around on a wild goose chase and never got a straight answer, and your unprofessional attitude has further shocked me. You act like running a convention is so much more important than every other aspect of the convention, like keeping attendees or vendors happy. Like I don't have business to run? How do you think I felt being stuck in the hot ass dealer's room for 9+ hours, or how attendees felt sitting outside in line in even hotter temperatures? I didn't even complain about it at the con, I knew you guys had shit to deal with, but you've come off as completely innocent and it bothers me.

Also you continue to gloss over other aspects, like what >>6963136 has brought up.

>> No.6963206

>>6963180
Look, you're treating me as if I'm a representative of someone who is doing business with you. I'm not. I don't need to be professional toward you. Supercon is over, and I won't be involved until next year's show. I'm not involved with the business aspect, the vendors, the exhibitors, or the hotel. I'm sorry you were hot. The hotel knew about it when people started complaining, and they tried their best to alleviate the issue. I'm sorry the weather was bad while people were standing in line.

I'm not absolving myself of responsibility for anything I've said or done, and I mostly stand by everything I've explicitly stated.

I don't know what you want me to say about that guy's statement. I said good riddance. I'm not going to sit here and address it as if I have something to explain to you, like you have a say in what my attitude should be as someone who's identified himself as a staff member. Like I said, nothing I'm saying here is representative of Supercon. I'm trying to pass on information that you might not have that might give you a better perspective as to how we handled these issues behind the scenes.

I originally came to this thread to discuss why the staffers were rude to Homestuck fans. If you want to bitch and complain that you got the runaround because you wanted to have a sitdown with someone who is handling literally every other guest in the convention to plan YOUR table, you're being selfish. Everybody had problems. If you're so shocked at my unprofessionalism, or whatever, tough shit. I'm not here to hold your hand. You're right, you shouldn't have gotten the runaround. But honestly, not everybody gives a shit about some random vendor who wants to discuss some shit that has nothing to do with the convention they're currently dealing with. I don't mean to personally offend you here, but you have this weird sense of entitlement if you think you deserved anything other than what you paid for at the con.

>> No.6963218

>>6963180
And furthermore, you're absolutely deluded if you think I'm going to maintain any sense of professionalism, after stating numerous times that I'm writing to you as someone who's just fucking around on 4chan at 3AM, not as a representative of this business. Stop treating me like I owe you something. If you want to secure a booth for next year, you know who to contact. I'm done going back and forth with you.

A) As far as I know, Mike is talking to the MBCC, which will take care of your space, traffic, and parking problem.
B) The hotel was aware of the problems, and worked as hard as they could to fix it in a timely manner.
C) The staff will have better attitudes next year if I have anything to do with it, and I'll make sure they're better trained and better informed as well.

>nothing I'm saying here is representative of Supercon

And yet you claim to be a staffer and therefore someone from the convention that can represent it?

>because you wanted to have a sitdown with someone who is handling literally every other guest in the convention to plan YOUR table, you're being selfish

I didn't need to speak with Mike directly, I needed to speak with someone, anyone, who knew if I could buy a table next year. I was directed to Mike, Valerie, and Sandy. It's Supercon's fault they don't have someone directly for the vendor hall and dealing with vendors.

A lot of conventions care about the other people that help make it great. You as a staffer should understand that vendors, and like I mentioned guests, artists, panelist and so on, are what make a convention appealing to attendees, not the staff themselves. Staff are responsible for putting everything together, making it run smoothly, and dealing with issues.

And getting a booth for next year, at that convention, has nothing to do with the convention they're currently dealing with? I'm registering for the same convention. Plan ahead and try to organize yourselves better.

Not on 4chan. I don't want to explain myself again. I'm going to call it a night. I hope you know a couple things:

A) Complaining to me has accomplished nothing, and your communicating to me will go nowhere, as I am in no way an authority over anything at Supercon, and if you want anything resolved, you should contact someone who is.
B) Complaints ARE being heard, and suggestions are being considered, as long as you're talking to the right people.

I don't think so. With how the con's attendance blew up, what does he care about a handful of 4channers? He barely responds to feedback on his own facebook page, and the bulk of his attendance comes from casual fans/the public, not us. What does he care what we think?
