That's more than a little damage though, you can tell she wore the dress A LOT, probably because she knew it was a coveted piece. I want to say that $300 is too much to ask for the set in the condition it's in, but honestly I know someone out there is going to pay it and it sucks.

Holy shit exactly. I was so depressed looking at how faded the dry cleaner disaster area was, a single missing waist tie, that dark stain...!
Shit's heartbreaking for people like us who've been looking for it forever. I'm half tempted to buy it for the bag and maybe just figuring out a way to covert the waist tie into a detatchable thing to cover up the faded area, but for $300?!

I had the same thought, but in the end I decided that $300 really isn't worth it though in my opinion. You can buy a lot of really nice things with that money, and I'd honestly be a lot happier with adding more fluff to my wardrobe than I would be by adding a single damaged piece that may not be salvageable.

To boot, another one of my dream dresses is going for a steal and it's only missing the detachable waist bow. (though I can't buy it anyway, thatshitwontfit.jpg)
There is no excuse for that pricing, it's just embarrassing. Especially because how do you beat up a dress that badly? While Lolita isn't exactly mountain-climbing gear, it's not exactly made of tissue either.

>> No.7028773

>Why don't people take better care of their dresses?
From the photos, it looks like the majority of the damage (excluding the missing waist tie) was done by the dry-cleaners. I'd have been pissed as all hell if I took a dress to a cleaner and it came back that faded and grey.

The dry cleaners made it worse, but the dress already had what she described as "grey ink marks" and "pink spots" on it. I'm with you though, luckily I've never had that sort of thing happen and I constantly worry about the day it does.

Seeing all the dry cleaner horror stories people have is enough to make me believe in spot cleaning and airing out only.

To stay on topic, one of my dream prints should be reaching me on Monday. It's not the JSK version, but I've only seen the JSK in the colorway I want for sale once and it went immediately. So I got the skirt.

>> No.7028818

>>7028800
I guess I'm pretty rough on my bags, because apart from where the red is chipping away at the strap base, that bag doesn't look too badly beat up to me. I'm also having a hard time seeing the damage on the necklace other than the tarnished clasp. Maybe it's just my screen, but I can't see a colour difference on the bear even with the "damage" circled.

Granted, I wouldn't pay $300 for the set. But I don't think anything other than the dress is beyond use at this point. I'm a bit surprised she didn't just sell the bag and necklace alone and give up on the dress as a loss.

>> No.7028821

>>7028807
Yeah, but it's impossible to say how severe those marks were before the dry-cleaners tried to "fix" them, since the damage they caused on top of those marks is so severe.

I've bought items that were described as having
pen marks or small stains, and it took me ages to even find them when the dresses arrived, because they weren't as bad as the seller perceived them to be. Then again, I've also bought a dress that was "pristine" and "worn twice" which had suspicious, rust-red stains on the interior lining when it arrived.

I beat up my brands bags and they look that shit after a whole year of using. Thattakes while and she couldn't be using her bag daily for an entire year.
Also for that necklace to be tarnished, she must have sweat all over it a lot. I don't know what she's doing to get all that shit in the pocket, or what kind of shitty dry cleaner she used (if she is even telling the truth here and tried cleaning it herself), but the conclusion is: birch doesn't clean her clothes and shouldn't be charging $300 for it.

I'm another Honey Cake wanter, so it's a bit annoying. If she kept it and never sold this, especially for said price, it would be a non-issue. Mad/10.

The thing is, I've seen sets (minus that fucking bag) go for only $300-400 dollars in near-perfect condition.
Even if she did reduce it, it's shitty as hell that there is no part of that set that is in "good" condition. Sure, the bag looks decent and is a find in itself, but the dress is basically garbage.
I realize that it's mostly due to the dry cleaners, but maybe she should've tried other things beforehand (considering that there have been several anons who've lately spoken out about how their dry cleaners made their dresses worse) or the person who owned it before her shouldn't have gotten it messy. I realize that accidents happen, but I am still so fucking careful when I wear lolita, and I don't even own pieces like this.
Also, always carry tide to go and other emergency cleaning supplies. Sorry for the rant, it just really bothers me. This means that there is one less yellow honey cake on the market for me to eventually buy.

The dress by itself with the hat without the apron, sleeves, tie and wristcuffs looks pretty cute but the skirt doesn't seem hugely flared so probably won't take an a-line petticoat. You'd be better off replacing it rather than reinforcing the material, to be honest. The problem with the boning used in AatP dresses is that it tends to split into little, thin pieces and jab through that way. I'm not sure how it happens, since I've never in my life encountered boning that was made that way. You could probably most easily get away with opening the channel at the waist, pulling out their boning, and inserting your own OR pulling out their boning and adding a cap/seal so that the pieces don't split apart.

Oh wow, I didn't know that the boning actually fell apart! I though that the end of it was sharp so it worked its way through the material as you wore it, and that would be fixed by filing the tip and putting it in a better casing. Bugger.

Ah well, overall it's about the same amount of work. It's so strange that the boning does that. Thanks a bunch Anon, I appreciate it.

>> No.7030341

>>7030326
Yeah, I thought the same thing until my friend showed me her MT dress. The boning had broken into about five or six pieces and started pushing through the material. It was really weird. In the end, she just opened the seams at the waist and removed the boning entirely. She's thin enough that it didn't make a huge difference, so if you're on the petite side, that could be another option.

And honestly, I'd never seen that happen before. Since then, I've made it a habit to check all of my boned AatP stuff, and at least two of the JSKs have started to do that.

I'm fairly small, so I might remove the boning and see how it looks on me that way, then replace it if it looks off. I guess I'll have to do that with a ton of my wishlist pieces, I love the look of AatP's boned bodices.

It's because AatP uses this kind of boning, which is more like a bunch of plastic strands fused together than a solid chunk of plastic. That's why it splinters (I've had the problem with handmade pieces in the past, which is why I stopped using this kind of boning). That said, it looks like the technique in this image should help keep the splintering under control, haven't tried it myself but it might be worth a shot if you want to keep the original boning in-place.

If I have learned anything about AatP over the years, it's to avoid any dress with corset boning like the plague regardless of how amazing it is. The skirts with it are fine, but the dresses end up damaged often enough where it's not really worth it unless you plan on either barely wearing it ever or dedicating more money and lots of time to fixing it. Given how much money people spend on their clothing, you'd think they'd be willing to spend a little extra on a material that doesn't damage the dress. :\

Considering how this isn't a new issue by any means and it occurs so often, I'm surprised they haven't changed it. Then again, people probably don't really like to contact Baby/AatP about quality issues since they've blacklisted people and have threatened to sue them for doing so in the past.

>> No.7032018

Ulg, so true. Half my favorite items by them have corset boning. Luckily, most of my favorite prints they've done do have other cuts I like almost as much, like Poison de l'Amour. I could go for anything in that series, even if the JSK with the corset boning is my favorite.

>> No.7032100

>>7032015
I'm one of the anons upthread and I agree. It's really crappy to buy an expensive dress that wreaks itself just by being worn. Made even worse by the fact that most of the boned dresses are stupid popular and go for retail+ secondhand, and they're probably already damaged. It's why I'm so hesitant to buy my dream dresses, I don't want to get screwed. I'm willing to remove/replace boning though, depending on the inner structure it would be pretty easy (And Baby makes it easier by not lining bodices).

It is sorta distressing that they've done nothing about it. I wonder if their oldest designs like Pirate Alice have the same problems, or if they started with VR and the 2010 designs.
If the Japanese girls complained they might change it, but from what I gather it's unlikely for those girls to complain. Overseas complaints are likely to be brushed off though.

>> No.7032168

>>7032015

Honestly, besides the fact it is terribly cheap material, most of the damage from the boning seems to come from sitting down or bending over causing the cheap boning to warp, shatter, or rip through the material.

I'm not kidding about the sitting down, a surprising number of lolitas have horrible posture that I have observed and when you hunch over like that you warp the boning in weird shapes or forces it to rip through the seams.

I have MT jsk and I've found if I wear an steel underbust corset UNDER the jsk it forces my torso to stay rigid with perfect posture (because there is no slumping, bending, and contorting even when I try). I've been wearing a corset under MT ever since I bought it NWT secondhand and my boning is in perfect shape. Seriously, I have worn the dress upwards of six time for long meetups.

It might seem like an extreme measure instead of just altering the dress or removing the boning, but it *does* work. Not to mention it gives a great silhouette!

Just food for thought if you love the AatP dresses with corset boning but don't want to modify them.

This is why non-coset makers need to NEVER use boning in their garments. It takes a hell of a lot of skill and experience with corset making in an age where the art is all but lost. Even harder to find anyone that understands corsets in an Asian country.

Boning should always be part of separate garments that is built to last. This is another nail in the coffin for me to avoid Baby.

whoa whoa whoa.
>Boning should always be part of separate garments that is built to last.

NO.

Boning has a completely legitimate place in a finished garment, it just needs to be done correctly. Even gowns from the Edwardian and Victorian eras had boning in the actual bodice of the over dresses. Please see this website for the inside construction of various historical gowns: http://collections.mcny.org/C.aspx?VP3=CMS3&VF=MNYO28_4

Baby is indeed a failure at properly applying boning. They tend to use Ridgeline, which is a sew-thru boning, without finishing the ends of the boning by either heat treating it so the smaller pieces fuse, or by capping it off with something sturdy like duchesse satin, or leather, etc.

If your boning gets warped, you can use heat to re-shape it.

>> No.7032606

>>7032408
We will just have to agree to disagree. I don't think a sub-culture brand is going to manage the boning properly (as they have already shown).

I never said that boning in finished garments dont have a basis, just that the time era for it to be done properly has passed. Its much less of a headache to just not make such an attempt if you can't do it right, and you also have to consider that a person not used to corsets and boning would have a hard time maintaining it.

This dress. In red or black. Stupidly left it on the site for months, thinking I'd come back for it. Then it was gone.

Reserved the recent Gold Braid pinafore and hooded capelet in burgundy to make up for it. Still hoping to find this one one day, but Meta's resale is so weird. i feel a little overprotective(?) when i see anyone else list it as wtb piece like im going to miss out haha. i saw it in ivory on mbok too, but its my least preferred. i must have it in red!

ive wanted the nurse set but theres absolutely no application for it anywhere besides a con or a photoshoot... i wouldnt even wear it to a meet, because even i would admit id be silently frustrated if i saw someone else where a uniform/costume sort of lolita to a group meet in public reinforcing lolita as a costume...

sigh. i'd actually wear it on the theme of being a nurse of a mental hospital. goes along with my psych degree. this was actually going to be a BTB secret but i am reluctant posting lol

what i love about these threads is what these coveted dresses could mean to someone

like youll look at what someone's dream dress is and go "ugh that's awful" or "meh, why would they want that when theres nicer designs out there?"...

its like its less about personal taste but more about whether it instigates nostalgia or something. thats what my most coveted turned out to be anyway. i used to not know what dress to buy because thered be hundreds of pretty dress but none that really stuck out to me until i took them from a more personal perspective.

Yeah, porz kerchief is a weird dress for me. I've loved it and wanted it since the moment I first saw it, but it really doesn't fit into my wardrobe or other dream pieces at all.

I think its the dresses "ethnic" sort of charm that really grabbed me. It reminds me of my grandma and the little bavarian festival my town used to have every year (not that it's related, but it has the same aesthetic, I guess).

It's also something I could see myself just wearing as a sundress on a hot day.

wow, what you described is exactly what happened with me! it'd also be an oddball for my wardrobe too, but upon seeing it I also saw my family heritage in it.

hey, dont take my word on it, i'm just a person with an opinion. but from how i currently see it, we have a group of girls dressed in princess silouhettes out in public or having dinner and then one is wearing an obviously nurse themed coord with a swiss cross and everything.. yeah. same goes with the feeling when you go to a meet and theres that one person wearing a cosplay and you're trying to swat off strangers who ask what our "costumes" were for, right?

if i could justify myself actually wearing the sets out, i hella would. even if i dont dont though, personally its fine for me as i collect lolita dresses as a hobby without needing to be always wearing them. thats how i intend to keep my foot in my passion when i get too old looking to dress like a doll anyway.
