Well, you're right in that it needs to go down to the neck and further around the face, but it doesn't need to go completely into the hairline. With the white makeup, the goal is to make the face look like a mask, so geisha purposely leave a small bit around the hairline exposed to give that mask like effect. The exposed bits on the back of the neck are more of an aesthetic/erotic thing as the neck is a very erotic part of the body in traditional Japanese mentality (hence the lower you wear your kimono neckline, the more sexy it is).

I don't want to assume, but I think the reason the photo kind of throws me off is the way her arm is angled directly towards the camera. That's not exactly a natural position for arms to rest in, so unless the photographer caught her as she was making some movement, it would be rather deliberate.

I can't really speak for others who have cut in the past or those who still do. I used to, but I've always made it a point to avoid areas that would draw attention, such as forearms as I knew they would be difficult to hide when fresh and that they could possibly leave scars that would be difficult to conceal later.

Choosing such an obvious place to cut, or to cut deeply enough to leave such obvious scars... it really seems like it was a cry for attention. Why else would you choose your forearms? Why else would you cut into a non-lethal area of flesh so deeply as to leave such thick scars?

) Anyway, Pictures like this really bother me, as I have had an awful problem with cutting in the past. This girl has more recent cuts, looking closely I can't tell if she has white scars or not, but scars that still have color are typically under a year old if I remember correctly, if she has healthy skin. I feel sorry for her, whether she's trying to get attention or not. There's a reason as to why she'd be doing either one. I would agree with others about how I would hide my scars, but it felt the best for me when I'd cut on the forearm. It just felt better to me. There were times when I couldn't really control myself and I'd cut there, maybe that is her situation as well. Maybe she feels better there than other places. I fortunately don't have too deep of cuts on my arms, but I would make deep cuts on my thighs, and now I'm too embarrassed to wear anything above my knees. Most of the scars have turned white, but I'm still so worried. I get nervous when I'm out in the sun around people because the scars on my arms show up so much more. She is going to regret this one day, so much. I'm sorry she felt the need to do this, whatever the reason was. It's been nearly two years since I've done any type of self-harm and I need to say, I still have many days where I'm desperate and feel the need to cut. Fortunately, I have found a few hobbies that can distract me until those feelings are gone, but it becomes a very addictive thing. I hope that she is past this and no longer cuts herself, I've thought about that picture a lot yesterday. I hope she is well.
