I hate this whole "my interpretation" mindset. I get that fashion evolves, I get that there is room for creativity, but these people who get so butthurt when you call them out are always the same.

I thought it was a weird exaggerated American high school television series thing that nobody actually does in real life but then I met actual native and non-native English speakers who do this, and I just cannot hold a conversation with them for more than a few minutes because listening to that shit is so exhausting.

Yeah, people from Australia (and I guess NZ too) do something similar, but what I'm complaining about is really straight up all questions all the time. It's bizarre. The Australian girls I knew did it for emphasis and it was easy to tell real questions from statements she wanted to emphasize, because they sounded subtly different. They also didn't do it for every sentence. The people I'm complaining about really do it for EVERY sentence and their questions are indistinguishable from regular statements, which is super annoying since I mostly know them in a classroom context and they keep confusing the shit out of our guest speakers every time they raise their hand. Most of them are actually non-native speakers (two are from Canada, though) and I guess maybe they're more heavily influenced by television since the people around them don't speak English very well, either. It really is bizarre. Like 25-year-old bearded German guy who constantly sounds like an insecure American preteen girl bizarre.

I read an article about that lift, actually. Its appearance DID come from American teens, researchers found, and it was a subtle way to put pressure on their peers before it started being tacked to every single sentence. Basically, they found that young women/girls in leadership positions where the ones who used it the most, as a means of being slightly passive-aggressive, to get people to do what they wanted.

One example they cited was that when an officer in a college sorority had to convince other members to take on an unsavoury task, her tone would change to one of questioning/a lift at the end of every sentence. This made the girls being confronted feel as if their competency was being questioned, and volunteer faster.

It was really, really bizarre. I'll see if I can find the article for you. It also talked about how most vocal/tone-based linguistic changes that have occurred in the past 75-100 years have been generated by women, but are attributed to men (who put them in songs, etc.). It was a really weird set of studies, but quite fascinating.

I had a little "cookie cuter punk" phase in sophomore year of high school and I only wore that shit when I was hanging out with my friends outside of school which was rare since my parents were strict as fuck. But when we had to go to church and formal events, I had clothes specifically for those occasions. Now my closet is filled with pink, floral, frilly himekaji items but I have some blazers and basic formal/work attire for when the time comes.
