There are ways to stand out in popular fandoms when mass-produced uniforms become the norm, without going out of your way to pick something new/obscure. (This will probably not be news to you so ignore if it's not relevant)
- Make it yourself. That alone will be impressive. Every Madoka I saw at the premiere of the first film had an identical Taobao costume, for example. Mass-produced costumes are generally mediocre at best; you can make better fabric choices and craft everything to the best of your ability.
- Do any props involved. They're something that most people will be lacking if they buy their costumes online.
- Absolutely nail the wig and makeup. Ties everything together nicely.

Just do your best. Although on the note of the winter coats, since there's no canon color scheme yet, they may be hard to identify as your characters.

Generally I find that the Naruto fandom really matured. Time weeded out most of the weebs and if anything, I've seen people more happy to see Naruto cosplays compared to all the Homestuck and SnK.

But for contacts, most people use those mesh ones, though I've heard they're not great for wearing for long periods of time and can get hard see in without good light. Grey-ish contacts and editing them later would work just fine if you're not up for that.

I think these are okay when they are obviously done well and a good amount of work and thought put into them. Genderbending is a great way to breathe new life into costumes that are overdone, and so is steampunk. Unfortunately, this also can cause people to think they can get away with less work or less thought in their costumes, which is always terrible.

In my local area Naruto, One Piece and Death Note cosplays have died out almost completely. Recently I went overseas and happened across a cosplay picnic - 90% of the cosplay was from those three fandoms or were original characters. It was so strange.

Naruto, homestuck, one piece (especially Law), K project, hetalia and adventure time. Those together represent about 80% of all cosplayers on the cons I go to. Bleach was before but has almost died out.

I haven't seen Hetalia or Ouran in years. Homestuck is as prevalent as ever but ponies have definitely slowed down just in the past year alone.

I'm as sick of AoT (which sucks as as series anyway), Harley Quinn, anything Zelda, and Yoko from TTGL.

I cosplay hetalia still but most of the ones at conventions deter me from doing so at cons.

Don't wear the default uniform for everything! It's a country literally hundred of years for cosplay in their history! I myself did Victorian Austria and currently working on a accurate pirate England/Britannia

I know everyone has already mentioned it, but Dr Who, Supernatural, Sherlock, etc. It's a similar problem to Death Note a while back, how the costumes look easy so no one puts any effort into them. However, it's even worse with live action, I think, because at least anime is abstract and can interpreted in different ways. In live action media, the clothes are made out certain materials and are tailored a certain way with certain proportions, etc. It also helps a great deal to actually look like the actor you're trying to portray. Most people don't bother with any of this, though, and buy random clothes from a thrift store that "looks close enough" and don't use makeup or a wig or anything, so they just look like people wearing normal clothes and then get all offended when no one recognizes who they're supposed to cosplaying.

So pretty much everything in this thread is popular and mainstream

Does that mean I should only cosplay from things people have never heard of or at least never went mainstream?

that's how I felt at ACen. I was dressed as Robin from One Piece on Thursday and Friday, and had a great time with some new friends, talked about OP and stuff together, drank a lot, it was great. Next day, I was with my friend as Kanaya, and she was Rose (I really did this for her sake, I sort of liked homestuck back in '11 but then it sort of began to rub me the wrong way, with the fans and all being tards) so as we're walking around, i run into those OP bros again, and they sort of looked at me like I was the devil's spawn.

What I've found is that it's the gray paint that really makes people wary about you. I cosplay god-tier Vriska often, and the one time I opted to go full out and use paint I was completely avoided by nearly everyone. It wasn't even like I wasn't sealed or my paint looked messy, they just avoided me because I had paint on at all. Whenever I wear it without paint just as an easy costume I get tons of people saying "great outfit!" and lots of people come up to talk to me.

I guess it could be because they don't recognize the outfit as Homestuck without the paint, but either way I don't wear paint at cons anymore.

Honestly most snk cosplayers I see at cons have really shitty bought harnesses, ill fitting pants and jacket, unstyled wigs ect. because most of the band wagoners are kids and think they can just buy the pieces and not put forth any effort. Even having a mediocre costume with a well styled wig and makeup will make you stand out. I haven't heard people bitching about SnK cosplayers (except for on seagull lol) b/c they aren't really notorious for being homestuck level annoying, there's just a lot of them.

You have to buy everything individually, and as a result, yeah, you might have to buy the same thing 3 times to get it just right. But that's kind of the price paid for not being able to sew it yourself.
One way or another there must be effort put in. Not just dropping $100 on the first set that pops up on amazon. Also, casual cosplays are good for meets where it's too cold/hot/public/whatever. People who go to cons and just expect everyone to know they're x or y character ("I'm Eren in a sweater! DUH.") when it's not their official casual clothes really piss me off though. If you're wearing something that's not-canon, you're not going to get recognized, sorry.

I'm glad the fandom hasn't reached homestuck levels. If it ever makes it there, I'm going to stop cosplaying it. (I'm one of the bought jacket people, since after attempting to sew it a few times I gave up because I am a mediocre seamstress at best. But like I mentioned earlier, I bought three before I was happy with the fit and colour, then I embroidered the patches and put them on over the iron-ons.)
