TX gulls get in here.
Least favorite con, favorite con, cosplay plans, cons you are going to, the cosplay community in your area, whatever

We haven't had one of these in a long time.

I live in Houston, Tx and just started cosplaying last year so I haven't been to a lot of conventions so far.
>Best - Anime Matsuri, without a doubt
>Pretty good - San Japan, had a lot of fun last summer with my boyfriend
>Shit tier - OniCon, holy crap this was terrible.

I'll be going to Anime Matsuri again this year. Comicpalooza is coming up in May(?) and I'll be going to that as well.

I need help finding other people to go to conventions with. My friends aren't into anime enough to cosplay with me and my boyfriend hates going to cons with me. There's an anime club on campus but looking through their Facebook group pics is dreadful. I thought about joining until I saw the cosplays they were doing.. Ugh.

Anyways, hope to hear back from other gulls!

>> No.7319569

Bump for mention of Matsuri. Who got picked for the fashion show?

>> No.7319661

Anime Matsuri's A+ and only about an hour away so I'd say it's my favorite. I haven't been to Oni-con in 4+ years so I can't speak for it. A-kon used to be good, mainly because of the bands and other guests but the venue change last year was a clusterfuck of epic proportions. Massive lines for artist's alley and dealers room because of fire codes or some shit like that? Like they could only let so many people in at once and could not accommodate the metric fuckton of people. Complaints aside I'll be going this year. Might go to Matsuri on Saturday but I'm a little bummed I didn't get a ticket for the teaparty.

I'm in Austin but have only been to one con since I moved here about a year ago. I haven't really been into cosplay in a few years due to school, but I'm trying to get back into it and am hoping to make some cosplayer friends in the area.

I haven't been to either in several years, but A-Kon was always fun (always have tons of friends who go), AFest was really chill, and Matsuri kind of blew the year I went. Friends who went a year or so later said it still wasn't great, so I'm meeting a couple of friends from back home for All-Con this year instead (they said they had a blast last year, and it sounds better than going Matsuri alone). Definitely going to A-Kon this year and hopefully will check out several more in the state.

Everyone claims all-con is so amazing but it is actually pretty shitty. It's really small and they do not have much programing at all. They also start policing the halls after about 8pm, whether you are staying in the hotel or not which is stupid as fuck since you have to walk through the con space to get to the hotel elevators

So glad we have a Texasfag thread!

Eh, haven't been in Texas long enough to develop a true hatred, but Micro A-kon was shit in 2012

>favorite con
A-fest mainly because I started hosting panels, though I did enjoy A-kon and ANT was alright (winning in cosplay helped)

>cosplay plans
Armin (SnK), sprucing up my pirate Norway... would love to do Arabian Nagisa (Free!) but I need to get fit to do so. Otherwise I may add more to my Ed (FMA) cosplay towards the end of summer.

>cons you are going to
SciFi Expo, Mini A-kon, A-kon, A-fest, YaoiCon

>the cosplay community in your area, whatever
I'm a DFWfag and Hetaliafag, so on that front, it's pretty much blegh in terms of community (in the sense that there isn't much spirit of community left) but the anime club communities here are actually really great. There's definitely good cosplay in Dallas. I generally run into cosplayers when I'm at Golden D'Or. The lolita com in DFW is alright. Whole lot of mediocre coords at meets, though everyone is fairly nice, despite all the ita.

My main changes for my con planning this year are I'm shifting to more heavily hosting panels and am definitely not competing at A-kon aside from maybe the hall contest. Might try my luck at A-fest. When I moved here I was excited to compete and now I find it more rewarding to present panels. The amount of con time I had to give up for the A-kon competition just didn't justify it, and I don't really agree with how they structure their competition anyway.

Sorta in love with them all. If I had to pick, A-kon just because it seems like its the same every single year.

I always have a good time at AFest. And the Dallas Comic Con/Sci Fi Expo/Fan Days trio are always a blast, if a bit expensive and lacking in panels.

Again, seems like everything. I'm planning on hitting like, 15+ cons this year. Not all in TX, mind you. Sci Fi Expo, Dallas Comic & Pop Expo, All Con maybe, Animation Celebration, DCC, A-kon, AnimeFEST, Fan Days, IKKiCon... I think thats it in Texas.

>Least Favorite Con
Akon. There are some small shitty ones that I won't even attempt to go to, but I honestly would never go back to Akon, even if everything was paid for me.

>Favorite Con
Probably San Japan. I really like the area, and the people I meet there every year!! The panels are generally better as well.

>Cosplay Plans
Hoping to have a Fire Emblem Awakening group done by San Japan. We have about five people now, and I'm still deciding between Sumia and Panne. P4A, Ace Attorney, and Ao No Exorcist were a few of the bigger ones too. I'm stoked.

Most favorite con used to be AnimeFest, but it's been outpaced pretty quickly by Anime Matsuri. Last year's line fiasco and the annoying fratboys pretty much turned me off from wanting to go this year. I have medical debt to pay off, so I doubted I'd be able to go this year anyway, but my friends were awesome enough to buy me a ticket and let me stay in the room for free. I only have to come up with gas/parking/food, which can probably be reasonably done if I continue using my jewish saving powers.
I would really like to try different TX cons, though. I'm interested in San Japan. Some other advice for hotels and A-kon. Yes, it's cheaper to stay at another hotel. But again, beware of walking. The con isn't in a very walk friendly neighborhood (it's right by the side of the highway) and the Anatole wasn't letting people park who aren't hotel guests. For Thursday night badge pick-up we found parking in a side lot, but that was taken away by Friday. There was also an issue with a ton of cars getting toed.

Similarly for A-fest, don't forget that if you go on Friday, you have to plug the meters in the lots for the morning AND at night. When we left near midnight there were a good 2 dozen cars with boots on them because people forgot to go out and re-plug the meter for the night slot.

So just be aware of where you park if you park somewhere in Dallas. They do ticket, boot, and tow.

They usually wait until more guests decide if they are doing panels or events and schedule those first. Then they do regular panelists. You'll probably find out if accepted in Feb if you haven't heard from them yet. But you probably won't get your panel time until March if you're lucky.

If you haven't submitted for panels by now, don't expect to get a spot. They fill up around November or sooner.

this.

Most of the HLC girls got picked over any other girls in Texas, much less non-Texans who applied. The constaff is in their fb page all the time, so I'm pretty sure they picked most of them because they already have some relationship with them and the girls worship Denise like some sort of goddess.

Sad because they fag over OniCon's lolita circuit too and they'll never manage to save that con from being shit.

they have a makeup artist and a wig stylist. The production of the show is much higher than what you would think a con fashion show would be.

I'm stoked for A-Kon, too! I haven't gone the past couple years, but I hear mostly good things about the new location, first year logistics failures aside.

I live in Austin
Been to Ikkicon and San Japan. That's it, so can't say anything about other cons.
>Cosplay plans
When on Estrogen, I'd like to cosplay Rinoa from Final Fantasy VIII. Or maybe Stella from Versus XIII/XV.

all-con is kind of shitty. People play it up as "mini dragon con" but it's boring and they dont have much to do. Room parties are ok I guess though, of that's all you care about.

Um not true. My friend got picked was told she was picked by the designers. She hadn't met the con owners until well after the fact.

Con owners pick their favorites from the bunch and forward them to the brand designers to pick. The owners do have quite a bit of say in who gets picked aside from that. You friend either has connections with some of the models, actually does know someone involved in the con, is Asian or was one if the few random picks.

All-Con is a very laid back con. The people are older who attend so there's that. Lots of room parties including an official one run by the con itself - alcohol and all.

Events and panels can be fun depending on what you're interested in. They have a cosplay contest and a costume contest.

The location is nice. Free parking. Staff is really relaxed and nice.

It's a really small convention, so it or really just depends on what you are looking for in a con.

that venu is sub par at best. It sucks for any kind of photos with all the ceilings so low. They also badge check the second floor, even though you have to walk through the con area to get to the room elevators.

Oh wait, I forgot where I was.

Considering about 90% of the con is on that floor why are you surprised? I'm guessing you don't want to pay for a badge?

>why are you surprised
>only access to the elevators is walking through the con floor

Because if I was staying in that hotel and not there for the con I would be pissed as hell that these fuckers are telling me I have to go down to the lobby to get on an elevator.

I paid for my badge, it was still a fucking terrible policy.

Or was picked because they have modeled for them before since most of the girls who were picked were from the 2013 and 2012 show.

Ah good to know they like to have variety from year to year.
