It's not bad, but you have to be a really good seamstress to pull of that draping with what looks like a really heavy lining on the hem, and If you're lining the neckline, you should line the cuffs too. Also that hood won't work like that unless its a really stiff, thick fabric and that's gonna look off with a thin flimsy dress so I'd rethink that a little if I were you.

Finally I'm not sure what the eye makeup is but don't do raccoon eyes. Just don't.

What's going on with the drape? You have a lot of extra fabric bunched together under the waistband (assuming there's a waist seam, since the bodice has princess seams) but then the slit cuts out most of the extra? Why have it gather at all? Is the whole top of your chest covered by the same (looks to be sheer?) fabric the sleeves are made of? If not, how is the hood attaching in the front? Or if the hood's not attached, since the hair's coming out from under it all over the place, how is it goign to stay on? Agree with the another anon about the trim looking heavy -- it's going to affect the shape of the cut out unless you're using a less floaty fabric. The proportions of the slit and the skirt seem a little off, too -- is the waistband at the natural waist and your drawing 70% legs? Or is it an empire waist and the skirt really long? Are the little dots sequins or seed pearls? What fabric are you planning on using?

Alternate designs should be drawn with construction and materials already in mind or you put together something that doesn't make a lot of sense.

so this is going to take a lot of discussion. i'll spark it by going through all the up and comings (they need to be approved by multiple people to be moved into pretty tier, to my understanding) and giving my first impressions (i haven't bothered checking them out before lol)

kanaynay - her new url is borzoya. she still has the best dolorosa i've ever seen (pic related). yes, including emilia's. i'm so sorry father. the rest of her cosplays aren't that impressive, but they're all definitely better than potato rose, and she somehow has a spot in pretty tier (still confused about that)

hammasratas - WOW, definite pretty tier material. maybe even mid tier. i thought they were gomugomugodhead for a sec.

jaimons-le-bon-vin - really really really impressive, especially her condesce. she was photographed by CBC, too, so that should say a lot.

shoutpolesforeyes - i had to manually type in tagged/cosplay because his sidebar is fucked up. pretty average all around. maybe even below average construction. the only real impressive thing is his davesprite, and a lot of it seems store bought. but, again, better than potato rose.

plusle - not a cosplay blog. some kind of stock photography blog. should immediately be moved to god tier.

ceres - super cute. i love her meulin and her karkat a lot. her dreamer equius is very neat (with accurate colors, too!) she seems to be moving in the direction of inactivity, though. a lot of her cosplays are dangan ronpa etc etc

all in all, a very decent group of people who are all better than potato rose. potato rose makes the standards for pretty tier pretty low.

there's nothing special at all about shoutpolesforeyes, and ceres' only standout homestuck costume is her meulin. kanaynay would be pretty tier immediately if she had done another costume on par with her dolorosa, but as is, she's only done aranea, so i think she should be removed from the list. jaimons' roxy is mediocre, and her condesce is nothing great compared to good condesce cosplayers. i'd knock her off too. hammasratas i could definitely see as tier material though.

Well...they never refer to his hair thingie as a widows peak nor imply it (as they do with Bro's race and therefore Dirk's race too). It pretty much is up to visual interpretation (it could be a small an aristocratic fringe). Either way the wig on that Equius, despite his muscles, could be way better depicting either a widows peak or the fringe.

Also it is not safe to assume they develop similarly to humans just because they look similar and the comic does not explicitly say otherwise. I mean, they are arguably an older species (since they work pretty much operate under a post-scarcity economy in a traditional sense) and subject to a conquering way of life that could, in the loooong run, have selected for a different development than that of humans like more muscle development and size in some castes and psychic powers on others. Also not to mention the sexual dimorphism (tits) apparently useless on trolls could indicate that those are vestigial organs that were left behind as they, because as species could be old as dicks, adapted some weird form of symbiotic reproductive system with the genetic material mixing machines they have (although that is another topic I guess).

You're worldbuilding where Andrew has not. If you want to assume trolls are developmentally different past the grub stage, fine, but you don't really have any canon basis with which to do it. There's not really a canon basis either way, which is infuriating, although I would say the comic tends more toward trolls and humans being similar than it does them being different because Hussie didn't flesh them out enough to write about it. They're humanoid, female trolls have breasts, and they presumably breathe oxygen since they'll be joining the kids in the world they create through Sburb and I doubt hussie will end the comic with one race asphyxiating after victory. Tl;dr: basically all troll biology is nothing but headcanon conjecture. We don't have a whole lot to go on, and when you start thinking about it too much, things start to not make sense.

I agree. Looks like a hoop skirt under the first layer, and the under layer is tacked to the top layer at the front edge. Therefore it has an inflated balloon look because there is nothing holding up the inner layer. She may have even stuffed it to give this appearance, I can't tell. That's my guess anyway. Also, it's hard to accurately hem stuff like that without an extra set of hands.

Over all, the fabric choice and design are beautiful though. Seems to me like that hoop was a challenge to her and my guess is she would do it different if she did it over. (Don't know the girl, but I've been a construction judge at a few cons.)

I usually make my criteria by looking at something and thinking 'would this work/make sense in real life'.
You'll notice that a lot of overly elaborate designs that are just fucking packed with adornments would look insanely stupid on a real, three dimensional person. Impossible fits for fabric that is intended to be a woven is another good sign, as well as a lack of closures, weird pocket placement, nonsensical seams, weird or bulky layering/draping, etc.
Incorrect usage of details from specific time periods is another good one, though less easy to parse out if you don't know a little bit about historical costume.

I don't know. Personally, I think it's really easy to tell when someone doesn't know how to design. A lot of popular fanartists fall under this category just because illustration work doesn't really stress accuracy/realism in clothing, of all things.
