Person who posted the photo here: it's Montana spraypaint in Goldchrome color, over brown autobody primer. Two coats. It looks nice but you have to be really patient, even in warm conditions it takes 48-72 hours to harden enough to stop taking fingerprints. Also it goes on frighteningly orange-peel looking and then levels out as it cures. Finish with Future Polish.

The totem pole of shiny is Alclad -> Montana -> Testors enamel.

So I finished putting together the final under-dress for Elsa. It's not even hemmed yet, and I'm planning on doing some (a lot) of hand stitching with silver thread to get some of that streaky glimmer that it has, but I think the shape turned out ok! The bottom hem is a train wreck right now, but once I trim and hem we should be A-OK. I'm enjoying taking a project slow for once, and doing a cosplay just for the joy of doing it, not to rush to get it done for any specific event :)

I just finished a mock-up for Elsa's boddice. I need to let it out some, but I'm having this issue with it folding over on itself in the front (pic related). Will boning fix that? If so, is there something cheap-ish I can use for boning?

How to put in boning: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZ9MQjLZADg
And honestly you can go with a roll steel boning as well. I would recommend doing a coated steel since, when you hand wash it, the coating will offer some protection so it wont rust. Use a canvas material for the corset itself. Make two identical bases and place wrong sides together. Refer to video to insert boning. Use w/e fabric you want for the top. On the contrary, I've worked with Gesso before. It takes a few weeks to fully cure, and it becomes really strong, and somewhat flexible. I've made several masks using it

I don't plan on twisting or deforming it, not even use it in cosplay. Its going to sit up on my wall on decoration. For the purpose and cost, it will be fine. Also, both of my masks are twistable and deformable, both use gesso. Neither have cracked, and I used those for several cons

Yep, same stuff. As long as you give it time to cure properly, it works just fine. Sanding it on a curved surface is the only difficult part, but thankfully this shield is all flat planes.

Gesso, then some regular 321 Bullseye primer or others for that smooth finish, then your paint of choice

These are the iron plates for Dovahkiin's gauntlets. The only thing left is to seal them and paint them. I don't know what I should use for the sealing, though: PVA layers, Plastidip or a Montana Spray primer for porexpan (the guys of the shop where I found it told me that it would work for EVA foam too, but I'm not entirely sure).
Besides that, how does it look (it's the first time I use EVA Foam without counting a few scraps) ?

Looks good from what i see. And tell me how sealing will go. I dislike foams because of the whole sealing buisness.

>> No.7408612

>>7408593
Thank you, my sealing plan is the following:
IF the Montana spray works fine for this material, I'll discard both Plastidip and PVA. If not I'll have to decide between Plastidip or PVA. The latter one ,from what I've seen, consumes too much time (it needs like 5 layers of it +/- and applying them on a white surface doesn't make it easier).
But I'm not sure if I should buy a can and try it on a few scraps and see how it works (after all, spray cans aren't exaclty cheap).

Once I get the material, the sealing would be mostly in the dorsal (the visible) part, and the sides. Also, maybe I seal a few centimeters of the ventral part (I don't have the fur yet, so I don't know how much of that part is hidden by it).

>> No.7408618

>>7408612
When the guy at the store says the primer will "work", he means that it won't eat the foam (standard spray paints eat porexpan/styrofoam). Montana still, 100%, looks like shit on unsealed foam.
What DOES work as a sealant, that nobody uses outside of Japan, is neoprene-based contact cement thinned with lacquer thinner: http://gyakuyoga.hobby-web.net/cosgijutu/raion-tosoubondog17-En.html

"Foam" is a physical description, not a chemical composition. Does it eat polystyrene foam? Yes. Does it eat ethyl vinyl acetate foam? Possibly if you soaked it for hours, not if you brushed on a thin layer.

He told me that that primer worked also like a sealant on porexpan (ergo seal+primer), and that it could also be used to seal EVA foam, but as I said, I'm not entirely if it will work (meaning seal) on EVA.

A few tips if I may. First off you cant just use spray-paint on EVA. Its porous so it will look really horrible and cheap unless you seal it with something first. For some easy soultions look into modpodge or elmers glue. If youve got some money to spend on it to make it look extra nice look into plastidip sprays. It comes in lots of bright colors so that would save you a step since you can seal the foam and have it the correct color all in one step.

Second tip. Get a better razor knife. You cuts look way too rough. Get a blade with a quick blade swap function and change them frequently. Only a few cuts each since they dull fast. If you want to go further get a rotary tool and a sanding attachment to smooth and round some of the edges.

Also another tip and please forgive my poor Photoshop skills. Those panels of the breastplate are not flat you pieces. You should try and cut out a shape that you can fold into a 3 dimensional piece like this. With that thick eva you are using you will have to cut a 'v' shaped channel on the back of the foam piece along the line you want to bend. That will give a nice clean fold.

For the eye I have thought about foam re-enforced with... Something (maybe a million coats of gesso) that can make a "shell" on the outside. It's not that hard to do. Basically I modified a beach ball pattern to have more panels and omitted the circular caps. The white is muslin and the iris is more silk appliqued on. The black is simply sharpie, haha. It has stuffing for shape. The tubes are cut on the bias and I turned them by shoving a wood dowel through. They're held up by brass wire, but I think I'll add plastic tubing like yours when I get around to it.

The shirt is cozy flannel from Joanns since I figured she would want to be extra cozy all the time. Collar is muslin. The skirt is a poly-cotton blend with machine embroidery I found for sale. The silk is Saffron and Pomegranate from Silk Baron.

Man. I wish we weren't wearing these cosplays to summer cons, cause flannel would be super comfy...

What is the general diameter/size of your third eye? I think it is pretty close to the right scale, more so than many I have seen.

If you plan on using tubing, I have a few things I can say/warn you about.
The plastic tubing (clear PVC) I bought was 14 cents a foot; outer diameter was 3/8", inner was 1/4". I don't recommend getting anything larger than that unless you want a "cartoon" effect. From a company called US Plastic.
Can't link, but the stuff I bought is "Excelon RNT® Clear Flexible PVC Tubing" and the size is 1/4" ID x 3/8" OD x 1/16" Wall.
Bought 50' for $7 and something like $10 shipping. If you're in Ohio, you can just pick it up from their store.

I plan on using Zinsser spray paint primer as the base then using Krylon for the actual color. I used these when I painted my rain boots (which are PVC) and I have had no issues with them chipping, flaking, being stiff, not drying, etc. I got these from walmart for something like $6 for Zinsser and $4 for Krylon.

Fuck the person who said this is "disappointing", I think it looks completely anti-grav awesome. Here's a tutorial I saw from somebody's really cool-looking Satori: http://supahbeefcakes.tumblr.com/post/22154918177/touhou-satori-third-eye-cosplay-prop-tutorial

Medicine seller box hardware ALLLL DONE YESSS that only took 16 months of procrastination. All the brass parts are PVC, I just taped the handles and corner decorations on for this photo while I wait for the paint to finish out-gassing.
I don't know what I want to do about the eye. I carved it into the plywood. It was gold-leafed but that looked crappy so I stripped it, and it ended up too close to the gold trim at the top. I guess I could cut the design out of Sintra and apply it on top but then it's in higher relief than I want it :/

Having the finish on there I don't think putty/filling the grain is a good idea at this point. You mentioned using sintra to cut a shape, and I think this is a better path, but since you don't like the thickness why don't you use a thinner plastic sheet for it? Like something 1/16" thick would work. Or if you really want it to be really thin you could use actual brass, but I'm not sure how that would look with the painted plastic.

Its a bit hard to tell from that picture but alot of parts of that helm look like they could use some smoothing out still. I know your working ona timeframe but you might want to give it a second pass with some light filler and a proper sanding first. Squadron putty or some other kind of basic hobby filler would be good since it has along of raised details.

The helmet will be the focal point of that outfit so a little could go a long way in this case towards making it look better overall.

The important thing about gijinkas is that when the majority is store bought, to have a tiny something that you made that points to where it's from.
I'd suggest taking a fake hollow book and covering it like her spellbook. I'm sure someone somewhere already has made a pdf, though just cut the horse head out of fancy shiny paper otherwise. If it's hollow that means it's lighter and you can carry thing around in it, even if it's just the con schedule. If you want to have fun with that, maybe convert it into one of those cool book purses
Since TS has a canon human form now, you can choose whether or not to take inspiration from that. I have no idea where they got her blue shirt, but the pink necktie/socks seems like a nice way to incorporate that color from her hair. At least on the tights side, you might want to use a more subtle pink. Like the pink from your sweater. The bright hotpink of her hair is a bit gaudy to cover a larger swatch of your body

Don't forget that you don't need to buy it in the exact color. Dying is your friend! If you get a pair of white socks and necktie, you can dye it to color yourself. If the products you want are too expensive to warrant failures and buying new sets, take it slow. Take them out early, let dry, check the color. If they're too light, put them back into the dye bath. You can always dye it darker, but once it's too dark you're done

Also, you should work her cutie mark in somewhere. If you decide to go with a tie instead of a necktie, embroidering/appliqueing on her star would look nice (though if you go that route you might not want the tie to be pink, choose purple or white instead). You could sew it large onto the side of your skirt, though I'm not a huge fan of that look. And with pleats it might not even work. Little/medium stars at the hem of each pleat would look nicer imo

I just saw your pencil skirt post. If you go pencil skirt, don't choose your black one. You need it to be hair-purple or coat-purple

I put on the whole set in celebration of the release of Dark Souls 2! It was good for a stress test, as three issues instantly sprung up.

First, the loops of foam the hold the leather strap that goes between the cuirass to the shoulder broke off on the left side on the cuirass, presumably because the crack an that side pulls on it harder. I don't want to bridge the crack so I'm hoping reinforcing the loop and hardening the foam will help.

Second, the hip armor is really too wide for my small hips. There's supposed to be a gap in the back with a metal plate between them with a smaller one in the front, but there's not much I can do about it. Maybe shorten it a little on both sides.

Last, the elbow pad is too big around. Easy fix.

Next up is coating the foam and cutting up the cape and skirt.

Keep in mind I hadn't ironed it when I tried it on but do you anons think I should take more in around my hips? Since it's still quite loose but I'm worried it'll compromise the box pleats' fullness, unless it just looks too "poofy" in general. There's only a layer of trim and tulle underneath.

Corset website anon here. Glad to see everything worked out for you :) and glad i could help. It looks much better as well! There's always the flat steel boning (plastic coated) that isnt the spiral if you want something more stiff but it definitely looks like it sits nicely on you. Well done!

>> No.7431259

>>7430959
Your tulle is bunching up on the seam between shirt and skirt.

You don't need to take the hips in. You just need to adjust the tulle so it goes at a smoother curve when proofing out.

>> No.7431404

Thank you very much! I might order more because a couple of the side ones aren't quite as long as I would like, so I'll keep the flat steel boning in mind. I went with the spiral because I didn't really understand which pieces would need to curve in two directions, so I played it safe and got them all spiral. I was on a time crunch, but I ended up not finishing in time, so now I can go back and fix my laziness.

Sorry I probably should have mentioned that right away about the different types. If you do need more strength in an area as well you can double bone in one channel. I did that with mine since I needed to hold up (and in) my flesh cannons. The flat steel ones worked amazing. You can get ones that are thicker but eh.. Not something I personally shot for

You could instead get some large gold hoop earrings to wear normally. I don't see any non-awkward way of attaching hoops to your hair.

Maybe if you sew some long strands of monofilament into the twintails and hang some gold loops off of them? You could cut the loops out of foamcore so they'd be light. Also I think your gradient is too dark and that the twintails would look better if they were about a foot shorter.

>> No.7433355

>>7409265
I highly recommend layering all foam with tons of elmer's glue. I just use craft foam to make my props anf nothings saves your butt like elmers glue layered on like 5 times.

Don't glob it though, make sure you evenly coat it and let each one dry. Then spray paint, hand paint, whatever. It'll look good :D

Did you use a bias tape maker or just fold it by hand? It looks very uneven. Also, what happened to the corner? Did you just try to bend it around the edge without mitering? It doesn't look good as is. Also, you need to clip those corners better, they won't look as janky when you turn them like they do now.

Yes it is vinyl, my cosplay partner and I decide it suited best. The collar at the moment isn't actually attached, just sitting there so it does look a little funny, but it is meant to rise above the shoulders, not lay on them flat.

5 pounds of fabric later, I'm ready to tackle Emmeryn head first! On the left is my skirt for Yayoi from iDOLM@STER, it's a pleated skirt. I measured out all the pleats and folded them without a pattern, but I'm curious if there's an actual pattern for pleated skirts.
