For example. I don't think I've ever seen a Madoka with the right pigtails.Every cosplayer I see has long smooth, chin length tails that blatantly they just put on straight out of the bag when they should be shorter, spiky and layered. I checked to see if maybe her hair changed a bit in Mahou form but nope.

Meanwhile there's the Bleach captains who each have a distinct colored lining in their white captain's coats, but since eBay/China sellers ignore these completely you never see them.

This is about the most-accurate pigtails I've found, but they're still not fluffy enough.
Madoka looks cute with smooth pigtails, but it isn't accurate, no.

I never find a heck of a lot of Miku cosplayers that get the bangs right.

>> No.7423629

Oh lord, there's a whole host of PMMM things that never get done right. Kyoko's ponytails (always too sleek), Mami's drill curls, sometimes even the Homuras that make her skirt and sailor collar fucking grey instead of lavender. I could go on.

Mami's pigtails I let slide for the most part since they are so ridiculous, but things like Madoka's tails and Kyoko's antenna are so easy. But with Homura's outfit I dunno. It's that grey/lavendar that people get so worked up over with things like Derpy or Espurr gijinkas. It really could go either way depending on the reference.

The petals on Madoka's skirt, you can always tell who bought their cosplay when they're all droopy and laying wrong. Someone who made theirs on deviantart (RuffleButtCosplay) brought this up and now I can't unsee it. Even the ones who make it always get it wrong. I think it's because they make it one piece instead of seperate panels.

Oh my god, it's been so long since I've been active in Bleach cosplay I'd completely fucking forgotten about this. Jesus fuck.

And while we're on the topic of Bleach, can we talk about how so fucking many of the bought cosplays don't get the layering of the kosode and juban right? Fuck, for every cosplayer that has the correct double layering (or at least a fake collar attachment), there are twenty others that have the fucking white strip sewn to the collar.

It'd be pretty damn hard to do it in one piece and have it look right unless yo uwere doing crap like molding the petals in the right shape from worbla and stretching spandex over it so it looks fabric. Look at almost any animu character and things like seams and zippers don't exist for the most part. My husband wants to be Vergil so he was showing me his model in UMVC3 and the only seam in his coat exists between his sleeves and the base of the coat.

Most of those eBay sellers are just making Madoka's skirt one piece because it's easier, not because it's one piece like the original.

>>7423904
So fucking glad someone brought this up. The worst is when people don't even research how to put those things on. Like how the top is supposed to tuck into the pants and the white sash is the tie for the pants. But often I just see them wrapping the top over the pants and tying a white sash over the whole thing.

I can understand sacrificing some thing for accuracy though. First time I made a bleach group I hand-wove waraji sandals from hemp rope and they looked pretty good, but then they were SO FUCKING UNCOMFORTABLE. We even tried sewing in some Dr Scholls which made them reasonably comfortable, but a few hours into cons we started feeling the same pains again. The second go with those costumes we just trimmed some tan flipflops with rope and they looked and felt just fine.

I'm more into wigs than sewing or props, so I'm going to focus on that. I've never seen a Sailor Neptune/Michiru Kaioh or a Nia Teppelin wig that I've truly liked.

For Neptune, I feel like people always go with something too blue and/or long. I also feel like people get really lazy with the bangs and just separate the fringe out of the bag. I'd honestly go with a lacefront if I were to do her, but I can understand if people don't want to pay for that.

As for Nia, I understand that her hair is pretty much impossible to translate exactly into real life. However, I see SO many Nia wigs that are blonde with just a layer of either teal or bright blue under the bangs and the bottom of the wig- so it's mostly an issue of not blending the colors well enough and picking wigs that have too much contrast. However, I also have issues with lengths that people go for. There's the too short camp with that locks that only fall about bust length, and then there are people who try to go for her actual length and end up with some unruly mop that lacks volume. Pic attached is pretty much my worst nightmare in terms of doing her wig. I want to do a wig for Nia really badly, but, I don't know if I'd be able to make her any of her outfits or jewelry to my satisfaction.

Are you me? I had the same issue with Nia. Ultimately I kind of think her hair is gradient in some areas? Fuck, it's really hard to tell. The teal is just flat out wrong though.

Michiru is confusing because of all the different variations (long, short, different colors and textures across the manga arcs and anime seasons) but you'd think that would also help people get it right if only by mistake and it doesn't. The bangs are the biggest thing. Sure lacefronts cost more but an arda matilda is what, $65? And people still manage to find shades of blue/green that don't work.

I would also like some critique on my wig. I've only styled one pigtail so far and I'm about to get to work on the other one. I figured I would ask for advice first so that I can style them as well as I can. I tried to go for a spiky/messy look because I figured when she's fighting witches it's not going to stay perfect. I also didn't do blunt bangs because in all of the reference images I see she doesn't have them so I don't know why so many people have wigs with blunt bangs for her. (also excuse the fast makeup job, I have to wake up early for classes so normally I don't put it on in the morning)

But anyway something more on topic. One thing I hardly see done in cosplay is when people cosplay Elizabeth's outfit with the bolero and skirt they either make it out of really shitty stretch blue velvet or they make it out of fucking cotton. Oh and about 80% of the one's I have seen do not know what a long petticoat is apparently.

But please be careful with hairspray. A slippery slope with lots of crazy shaped wigs si using too much hairspray will discolor the fiber and make it look too dark. You have to strike a weird balance. Like putting enough fiber down on the tape then hairspraying the fuck out of it then letting it dry a little and then layer dry fiber over that when it's not too watery but still sticky enough to hold.

That way the spikes can move around so they don't look completely stiff.

I've seen a Scanty cosplayer sculpt a wig in the art style of PSG. I can't find the picture, but it's really neat to look at.
I imagine you can do something like that for Nia, but yeah it won't look natural at all.

I'm with >>7429719 though, I always thought her hair's shading was blue because there's no other shading on it. I think even if there was a way to make a wig have that pearly-cream look with blue shadows, the shadows would be too subtle and it'd look like a weird blonde.
There's got to be pearly paint that you can use on a wig, and maybe add a few light blue wefts in the darker areas, but...
Nia's hair is really impossible.

>> No.7435581

Actually I'm thinking.
I think if you get a curly light-blonde wig and fluff up the curls more, it'd work [for Nia].
And maybe airbrush a light blue into the bottoms and insides of the curls.
It'd definitely take an artist to do the airbrush part.

>>7441839
Not that anon, but I personally just think you should take a gun safety course. It's good experience and depending on your instructor, some of the shock stories and even possibly videos will teach you why Trigger Discipline is so important.

When a character uses a firearm in media, barring some extreme exceptions, they are normally trained extensively to use the guns in the canon.

Basically if you don't wanna go into that, just watch gun enthusiasts do test firing videos with the gun you are going to use for the costume, and for god sake, don't put your finger on the trigger in photographs unless you are going to shop smoke and muzzle flash with a cartridge ejecting, because your finger should never be on the trigger unless you are in the process of shooting. When you just leave your finger on the trigger you just look like a fucking idiot.

>> No.7441853

>>7441839
It also depends on the character. I can't see Revy practicing Trigger Discipline as she treats a gun the same way you and I treat pens or other basic objects. Meanwhile Chang, Roberta or Balalaika have police/military backgrounds and would be a lot more "formal" with their gun handling
